We were tempted to call Arthur Brown the first shock-rocker before we remembered that Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was dressing up like a voodoo medicine man and frightening children more than a decade before. Rumor has it that during the recording of this song, originally meant to be a ballad, Hawkins blacked out completely and doesn’t remember his screaming, guttural performance in the least.
