Check out this clip of Tosin Abasi covering Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android” from 2010. In it, the Animals as Leaders guitarist swaps his 8-string electric for a classical guitar. Along with upright bassist Matthew Hemerlein, Abasi fingerpicks his way through a dreamy rendition of this OK Computer anthem.
Having given the instrumental prog-metal envelope a serious push with their first two records—2009’s Animals as Leaders and 2011’s Weightless—Tosin Abasi and longtime guitar partner Javier Reyes are taking their virtuoso approach to the next level on their latest effort, The Joy of Motion.
Here’s Tosin Abasi from Animals As Leaders doing his thing on an eight-string acoustic guitar built and designed by Julien Bergeron. Tosin says, “I am blown away by the tone, volume and playability of this thing!”
I don’t really separate things. I love music and I love aesthetic art as well. I feel like there’s a thread between visual art and music. Sometimes a designer can give me a similar feeling and impact me as strongly as hearing a really cool song or a really great guitar player.
Animals As Leaders have premiered a brand-new track — "Tooth and Claw" — and you can check it out below. The song is from the band's new album, The Joy of Motion, which will be released March 25 via Sumerian Records.
