I agree with the other comment. Tina S. plays circles around them and she's the real deal. I personally don't find head banging shredding female guitarists sexy. In my old school view, dudes play guitar to get chicks. I can't picture a bunch of guys swooning over some chick guitar player or a line of male groupies! LOL

IMO the only real legit rock and roll chicks would be Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Nancy Wilson and Chrissie Hyde. Every other guitar playing chick from these Maidens to Orianthi have just been gimmicks. "Hey Alice Cooper's guitarist is a chick" type thing. On one hand it's cool they got the gig on the other if I were them in the back of their head they have to know it's more their looks than their chops that got them the job.

I'm almost 50 and maybe it's my age that makes me feel that way but I say ladies we won't enter beauty pagents and you don't try to be head banging guitarists.

My sentiments exactly GuitarLadd. Hell, Grace Potter hardly plays guitar and Id take her over these silly lil shred girls anyday

Whole Lotta Shredding. Who cares? Desiree Bassett's cool. She seems to be a big Dickie Betts fan. Samantha Fish, Ana Popovic, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Dani Wilde, it it ain't got some blues in it I don't want to hear it. Shred? Let's see how fast we can move our fingers. Never mind if it has any actual musical content with any feeling in it at all.

Xuefei Yang is my favorite.

This HAS to be a joke. Are you f'ing kidding me?? The tapping part from Eruption?! I'm sure this offends all the REAL female guitarists and musicians in the community. You could have just put up a video of Tina S from France and called it a day. She plays circles around any (aside from the Iron Maidens, they're amazing players) guitarists in this sad, sad video. Hell, one chick was playing octave chords and power chords, and that's supposed to convince me of her 'chops'?? This is the saddest s*** I've seen in a long time. Focus on real female guitarists, regardless of what they look like. You don't see them posting vids of dudes that look like Brad Pitt who can barely stumble through 'Smoke on the Water', do ya? If you like these damn 'bikini players' so much, be their sugar daddy and buy them a few guitar lessons for Christ's sake.

Amen! I left her off my list of blues gals, forgot. Also Carolyn Wonderland. And of course Samantha, Ana, Dani, and Joanne Shaw Taylor. And there's some others I can't remember their names right now. Play blues based stuff, play real music. Too hell with this shredding crap.

Mr. Zabrocki is absolutely correct, and many of the female musicians I follow are genuinely offended at the common astonishment: "Wow! You mean beautiful women can play kick-___ music?!?"

That said, I am so grateful to the magazine for the 2nd group, where I was introduced to Crucified Barbara and Mia Karlsson's guitar work. The link to the video is gone now; I would suggest the video "Into the Fire": UN7yYDgKoj on You Tube or through www.crucifiedbarbara.com. For those of you fixated on appearance, CLOSE YOUR EYES and LISTEN to the solo! I tried to photograph Mia in outdoor light in their first USA concert, but could never get both her face and hands motionless at the same time - she was too fast. She put her left leg on the low railing, braced the Vee and really cut loose. I fully expected chucks of fretboard, string windings, tuner teeth, etc., to come flying into the audience. There may be others that shred faster, but she integrates the solos into the songs so very well. "Rock Me Like the Devil" is great also and introduces the band members. Check 'em out.

Thanks Guitar World!

Forget about them being women or not, I was digging Desiree Bassett's playing. She reminds me of a young Bonamassa or Jonny Lang. Great style, musicianship, and stage presence ...and she looks like she's having fun and that it comes easy to her. I'd like to see more of her and her band. And BTW, they all play better than I do. Also, Tal is already a respected established professional that Jeff Beck helped put in the spotlight. If you're throwing her in, since she is a bassist, then sorry but this is just sexist garbage about women and it was about gender not guitarists. Not that I dont love women, I do, but this is not the place to objectify anyone except as a musician.

Still missing so many: Jess Lewis, Sarah Longfield, Sandra Bae, up and coming little Zoe Thompson, just to name a few.

Why should the sex of a person matter when it comes to musicianship?

Very much agree. Everyone of these guitarists is pretty darned good.

I dislike this idea from the very start.
