I really like the metaphor of the notes of the scale "orbiting" around a particular tonal center.

Sometimes I like to think of the notes of the scale as seven different "walls" in a room (including ceiling and floor), with the tonal center being the floor. If gravity shifted and the wall to our left became the floor, the room sure would look different! That's like the change in character of the same seven notes depending on which note is the tonic.



I agree Ben! I always thought of the 'tonal center' concept as comparable to that of gravity. I like your analogy as well, it definitely illustrates the concept of modes in a unique way. Thanks for reading!
