The Ultimate Warrior -- a force in the professional wrestling world for, well, the better part of my childhood -- was among the roasters at Guitar World's Roast of Zakk Wylde this past Thursday at the Grove in Anaheim, CA.
As many of you know, Zakk Wylde is the victim ... er, guest of honor at Guitar World's very first Rock and Roll Roast this Thursday night in Anaheim, California. Zakk will endure tongue-lashing from Ozzy Osbourne, Jim Florentine, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Brian Posehn, Corey Taylor, Chris Jericho, Jim Breuer and more, all at the hands of roastmaster Sharon Osbourne.
John "JD" DeServio has been involved off and on with Zakk Wylde and Black Label Society for several years. Their personal relationship goes back even further, to Wylde's pre-Ozzy Osbourne days. JD has made a career for himself -- as an extremely versatile musician and producer -- beginning with a solid musical education in high school, followed by intense study at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
While on tour with Judas Priest -- and head of a run of support dates for Guns N' Roses, Music Radar recently caught up with Black Label Society frontman Zakk Wylde to talk about his new Christmas album, among other things.
"Some people just don't understand," he sighs. "They say, 'You're crazy to leave Ozzy, Zakk. You could have played arenas forever. Now you're going to have to play small clubs.' Well, fuck you. I'm not in this for a rock star lifestyle. I'm in it to play my guitar. And I'd play it in a toilet if that's the only place people would come hear me."
Zakk Wylde has a diverse palate and has, over the years, bagged many gigs as a guest guitarist for artists of nearly every genre, including a spot on American Idol with singer and Idol finalist James Durbin earlier this year, wailing away on the Sammy Hagar classic, "Heavy Metal," from the movie of the same name.
Is it just me, or is Christmas starting earlier and earlier every year? It may only be the second of November, but Black Label Society are already getting in the spirit of the holiday season with Glorious Christmas Songs That Will Make Your Black Label Heart Feel Good, an acoustic EP of three BLS takes on popular Christmas tunes.
