It is a wind up if you understand Bruce but he is right Metallica has not done anything really worthwhile in years. Iron Maiden musically, lyrically are miles ahead of Metallica.
Metallica has great name yes but could they do a Record like Final Frontier with all the complexities in writing and playing um no.
Iron Maiden has never sold out they have stayed true to their fans and to themselves that is why fans are so loyal to them. Metallica in the 90's went after the fans the same fans that made them millionaires may times over. Another issue with Metallica is they have allowed their massive ego's to get in the way of the band, I am not saying Maiden does not have any ego's but they rooted still and that is why they can go into the studio and still make great records.
What Metallica has to do is simple embrace the past bring it back with a touch of the future, but I am not sure they can do it. I think people what Bruce is doing is lighting a fire up Metallica's arse to get them going to get them to be Metallica again and now not worry about kissing the celebs arses .

thats just fucked up to say man. metallica looked up to maiden and did a tribute album along with others for them. i dont care if anyone agrees,i just think thats a bit cold.

Not only is Maiden better, it isn't even close. Metallica sold out long ago and apparently stopped practicing. They aren't connected to their audience anymore. They just enjoy being rich.

I just saw Maiden live and it was non-stop amazing music. Bruce sings as well as he ever did, maybe better.

Back in "the day," I would have said Bruce is out of his mind. Now, though, I fully agree. While Metallica has made its' fan base by changing with the times and moving with what ever wind prevails, Maiden has remained true to their roots, making music that is as good as ever. And, live in concert, Bruce can hit all the notes (and sounds better at the end of the show than he did at the beginning!) whereas James Hetfield's vocals sound bad. Lastly, the Final Frontier totally pwned Death Magnetic!

Bruce challenged David Lee Roth to a sword fight...seriously.
He enjoys being a rock star and taking the piss. Maiden has better bass lines and tone, but not better than Megadeth's. And Megadeth is in the big 4. So it seems Bruce is comparing apples to coconuts. Both make an excellent pie. Let's be more specific compare time appropriate albums like Powerslave and Ride the Lightning. Both bands firing on all cylinders. And Cliff Burton compared to Steve Harris, that's a fair contest.
In the alternate Universe where Metallica toured with Maiden, Cliff Burton is still alive because Bruce Dickinson has a pilots license.
FYI Powerslave is the first cassette I ever bought and I still know all the lyrics..Metallica was just too heavy for me back in the day.

Oh what to say, what to say? Well speaking as a fan I like both bands but am more apt to play Iron Maiden over Metallica. As far as the quote from Bruce, seriously, who cares? Whether he meant it or was having one of those days it's his right to say what he wants. I read all these comments attacking bruce but the boys in Metallica aren't all saints either. James and Lars both have quite the mouth on them and have been in the spotlight with the roles being reversed. This is the music industry and it is the nature of the beast to make waves. Besides if you truly want to listen to a true egomaniac than hop on the the Kiss train and tune in to Gene Simmons. Gene makes Bruce, James and Lars seem like lightweights in comparison.

Why is it that everyone thinks Metallica is great? Of course everyone knows that the first albums were pretty heavy, but that’s because they were heavily influenced by Dave Mustaine. Why do you think Metallica started “exploring” other styles? It’s because the Mustaine and Burton material had run out and they needed to make more money. In addition, the only one in the band with talent was James. Take time and listen to Metallica’s drummer, which is overshadowed by the guitar players’ tone, and you will quickly realize that Ulrich has no talent. Then go on and listen to Kirk. People think he’s good but he’s being carried by Hetfield. When it comes time to play solos, he gets help from the wah pedal. When it comes to playing live, lets just say that there are better sounding bands at talent shows. Kirk gets lost and Hetfield gets carried away with with his “oh yeah’s” and whoe ho ho’s”. People need to stop hoping and living in the past.If you’re still in doubt, listen to St. Anger.

In that case, I recommend that you listen to Andy Warhol by David Bowie.

All you posters ripping Bruce for "putting down" Metallica need to re-read the article. He just said he thought Maiden is better. He did not say Metallica was bad. He did not even come close to stating anything negative about Metallica. Both bands can still be great within the context of Bruce's statement.

Metallica sold out with several albums after Justice

Maiden brings a lot more elements to metal than just speed. They transport you to where the song takes place and also educate you with the lyrics (Alexander The Great for instance).

Contest over - Maiden wins

Bonus points for Maiden. They paved the way for Metallica by being part of the NWOBHM movement in which Mettalica looked up to in their infancy as a band.

Oh my Lord Bruce!I'm for surely more a Maiden fan than i'am Metallica mate but when James said Maiden sucks some odd 25-30yrs ago he was full of piss&vinegar &of course booze! I can't believe Bruce @ age 50 something is saying this now,I see this nothing more than jealously & publicity for Yet another one of Maidens best of albums! I'm wondering if this has something to do with the Big 4 events,& Bruce is getting jealous & wants some press on Maidens new best of album?

Iron Maiden is of course better than Metallica in my book anyway. When I heard Piece of Mind back in 84', it kicked my ass and I bought a guitar the next year and have been playing ever since. Maiden songs are better and I find myself listening to Maiden a hell of a lot more than Metallica. Metallica had four good albums. After And Justice For All, it's complete shite. Maidens got a ton of great albums. Better all around, no contest.

I can not recall Hetfield dissing Maiden (I remember Metallica rift with Motley Crue but not Maiden) especially taking into account the fact that both Lars and James were huge fans of NWoBHM it seems a bit unlikely. But even if Hetfield said something bad about IM it was decades ago when he was a 20 something youngster... and Bruce (52!!!) says it NOW. Feel the difference .... and grow up a little bit yourself bro :)...it's just about music and arguing which band is better seems a bit immature and childish :)

No contest. Any guitar play Maiden EVER had could play a better solo than Kirk Hammett. Steve Harris is a way better bass player than MOST of Metallica's are/were. And if you really think Lars is a better drummer than Nicko please do us all a favor and slap yourself really hard in the face.

Both bands have huge accomplishments, differ styles and sound. To say one is better then the other, that can not be done. As long as it is metal to our ears then it is good.

Is it really surprising that the front man for Iron Maiden claims his is the better band? Obviously, when dealing with *opinions*, no one is right and no one is wrong. Personally, I prefer Iron Maiden. While I can *appreciate* Metallica, I've never been a fan. But neither is anywhere close to MY band, Last Rites!

Maiden. It's not even a real contest. Metallica are cool with the middle-aged white collar set. Real metal fans know where it's at. Murray and Smith vs. Hammet? No contest. Hammet sucks! Dickinson vs. Hetfield? Hetfield can't even sing! LMAO Oh, and by the way, all of you who are bitching that Bruce shouldn't have said anything like this don't have a very good memory. Hetfield said the same thing when Metallica started out and he dissed Maiden. He didn't just say that they were better than Maiden. He actually said that Maiden sucks. Maiden have never mocked Metallica on a recording. Metallica have. So where are all the guys calling James an asshole?!? Because he is one. Up the irons!

Bruce is wrong... not because Metallica are better than IM or vice versa... he is wrong 'cause he shouldn't say it this way... it looks more like 13 years old's rant than the opinion of full grown men. Couple o'years ago he said the same about Ozzy and the band had to suffer the consequences of his stupid behavior. So yes, Bruce might be the legendary musician but he is an a**hole as a person.

I love both bands, and they are both awesome live...
Metallica named Maiden on numerous occasions a major influence and always had nothing but good to say about Maiden, and that is why i find it sad that Bruce finds it necessary to trash Metallica and it's pathetic. Bruce should concentrate more on Maiden and less on Metallica. Or is it maybe fear of the "Four Horsemen"!

Even Lars admitted ( on Flight 666 ) that they (i.e. Iron Maiden ) were cooler than " other " bands around. I figured Lars meant that IM was cooler than Metallica. I loved Master of Puppets and Kill Em All. But Iron Maiden is WAY better, both in studio and live.

It's hard to say who is better with two bands with such completely different styles. Even though both fall under the banner of "rock" or "metal".
