Opinions are like assholes; everyone has one and they all stink.

Having said that, I believe Bruce is correct; Iron Maiden's music is more complex and probably superior to Metallica's. However, whether you are right or not, that is a rather bigoted thing to say, and it makes you look like a douchenozzle when you say that kind of thing directed toward someone who has always looked to you for inspiration.

Just because something is correct does not mean it needs to be said.

Neither band are better for me, I do love Maiden as i got into them first but Metallica are also a big influence. Maiden may seem like money whores but they do still put on an amazing live show, unfortunatly James did ruin his voice with alcohol and just doesn't sound as razor sharp as he used to and yes your voice does change as you get older as has Bruce's but he still can sing very very well wereas James cannot. His voice just breaks when he tries to sing the high notes. Load and Reload he still sound in fine voice and performing songs Wasting my hate and King Nothing live on Jools Holland he sounded deadly and i mean just awesome! He was great back in the day but hearing St Anger for the first time just made me wanna cry and don't get me started on the lack of solos and THAT snare drum sound, it's just plain rude!I've sometimes cringed watching recent Metallica dvds hearing James's voice break coz of his vocal chords being screwed and it's a shame coz it lets the whole band down. He did sound better on Death Magnetic but still a little weird to me. It's unfair to say that after Justice everything was crap, Sad But True is a classic with a total beast of a riff and the black album does have many great well written songs on it. Maiden are fantastic to me and always will be, some people think Paul Dianno was Maiden's best singer, some might prefer Blaze it's all down to personal preference. Cliff Burton was not a lesser bassist than Steve, afford the man some dignity he's dead ya know! He was an AWESOME force to be reckoned with! I do LOVE Steve's Playing very very much but sometimes wind my mate up about it singing the chorus of Run To The Hills followed by clunkity! clunkity! clunkity! as he does play those galloping triplets rather a lot! But i still love his playing none the less! Both Bands are fantastic, full stop.

I love both Maiden and Metallica but Maiden have seemed to have become more bothered about the money they can make than anything else. They don't seem to care about their british fans who might not want to or be able to jet around the world as they don't really play in Britain much anymore. I once read Bruce saying that Maiden wasn't going to play the old stuff anymore because they'de just be a caberat act and wanted to concentrate on the new stuff and if Maiden fans wanted to hear the old stuff they should go see an Iron Maiden tribute band then all of a sudden they're doing the Somewhere Back in Time Tour! and how many dates did they play in their own country? ONE. That really niggles me as this is where they are from but like I said they don't seem to care about the british anymore which is where they rose to fame first and foremost. If they hadn't got big in Britain who knows what might've happened but it sure does smack of hypocracy to say that you're not doing the old stuff then all of a sudden there's an entire tour dedicated to it! Metallica are the best for me for many reasons, James's riffs and precision are almost android like (Intro to Battery)and have influenced me a great deal as have Maiden's songs too. I love both bands and both have their strengths and weaknesses. I thought Metallica's cover of Remember Tomorrow was not too good and I don't imagine that Maiden could pull off doing a good Metallica cover either simply because they both have their own individual styles, both are Metal both are good simple as. I once Met Adrian Smith after a gig in Shepherd's Bush London, it was Chickenfoot and their only UK performance so it was packed and a great gig, afterwards I spotted Adrian Talking to Myke Gray of the band Skin who had reformed to support Chickenfoot and i couldn't pass up the opportunity to speak to Adrian as he is one of my biggest guitar influences so I went over and he was very nice to me but it felt like he couldn't wait to get away! maybe it was because he didn't want to get recognized and be mobbed but on the Flight 666 dvd he says outside the hotel it's fair game when a fan spots you but my hotel is my home from home, seems like soon as I mentioned Miaden he was off! I know that it's his job and probably didn't want to talk about it but we're his and Miaden's bread and butter! So when Maiden decide to only play one show in Brotain and shedloads over in America and Canada it just make s me a litlle bit peeved! I still love 'em though but sometimes meeting your idols can send you crashing down to earth with a hefty wallop! Personally I think that Maiden laid down a blueprint for a new style of Metal and Metallica were influenced by that and took it and put their own stamp on it. Also thinking about it Kill 'Em All was only 3 years after Maiden's debut and yes Maiden by then were onto Number of the Beast and getting very big , Metallica wasn't too far behind. as far as THE BIG FOUR not having Maiden on the bill was to me right as they are influences on all of the bands on that bill. It would be like Maiden being a support act to Metallica at one of their gigs. As other poeple have already said that James doesn't say things like what Bruce has said he is filmed on the Year and a half in the life of Metallica talking not very things about Axl Rose (who doesn't do himself much favours i know!) but it just isn't on but we're only human and not perfect and everyone is entitled to their opinion BUT! sometimes it's better to keep it to yourself especially if you're a high profile rock star!

Iron Maiden never changed their style, they didn't take risks, while Metallica really put themsleves on the line, +1 for Metallica

LEAVE RINGO ALONE.

avatar

superdoug

why doesnt Bruce brag about how much better his band is than Van Halen?.....or Aerosmith?.....or AC/DC?......you know why.....because Metallica was the only band that harmed his personal business empire....that's why.....he probably still can't figure it out 30 years later and asks himself.....these guys cant even sing.....or dont even know samuel tayolr coleridge poems....or have a skeleton mascot.....yet they sell more than we ever did at our peak.....how can this be?....MUST BE SELL OUTS

avatar

superdoug

you want the REAL big 4?.....the big real big four of 80s metal?.....are you sure?

it would have to be Maiden, AC/DC, Van Halen, and Metallica

love to sit in on the negotiations for that mess......but that is the BIG 4

avatar

superdoug

Im sorry Bruce is just being the douche he always was. The whole myth that Iron Maiden never sold out must be debunked. It's nothing more than convenient propaganda. Anyone who was a metalhead in 1982 knows full well Maiden was the most high profile mainstream fucking metal band in the world...with a gigantic merch empire....tons of video and radio airplay...the whole notion of "sell out" was only introduced to the metal world because a certain extreme unsigned metal garage band was getting a huge worlwide following....Metallica....Maiden's empire only crashed in the 90s because their merch became unhip....didnt matter how awesome their music was... I love Iron Maiden, but the bullshit myth that surrounds these prima donnas is a complete hoax...all 80s heavy metal bands wanted to be rich rockstars like Maiden....not grubby unsigned kids like Metallica....you guys who call Metallica sell outs have it totally backwards....and honestly tell me that the Black Album is less heavy or less commercial than the Number of the Beast...Iron Maiden tried to sell out....but people stopped buying...but gladly people are interested in them again...they rule

sometimes i wonder about many expressions like this. before i like both of band iron maiden and metallica.both them are great, popular, professional and have many adjectives. iron maiden is very well in heavy metal and unique also metallica in thrash/speed metal. i think this comparison is in low level. metallica was band that could invent the new branch of music in 1983 (thrash metal) and changed metal world forever against iron maiden could improved and developed heavy metal. i dont expect bruce that tells this statement for this reason i prefer metallica, because i never see that james tell bad things about other bands, metallica always look up to maiden.
i sorry for bruce because still , he is a baby

avatar

revelationman

It is a wind up if you understand Bruce but he is right Metallica has not done anything really worthwhile in years. Iron Maiden musically, lyrically are miles ahead of Metallica.
Metallica has great name yes but could they do a Record like Final Frontier with all the complexities in writing and playing um no.
Iron Maiden has never sold out they have stayed true to their fans and to themselves that is why fans are so loyal to them. Metallica in the 90's went after the fans the same fans that made them millionaires may times over. Another issue with Metallica is they have allowed their massive ego's to get in the way of the band, I am not saying Maiden does not have any ego's but they rooted still and that is why they can go into the studio and still make great records.
What Metallica has to do is simple embrace the past bring it back with a touch of the future, but I am not sure they can do it. I think people what Bruce is doing is lighting a fire up Metallica's arse to get them going to get them to be Metallica again and now not worry about kissing the celebs arses .

avatar

chaosbringer546

i think ur right he might jus be gettin james and the rest of metallica to wake up get out of their own little crazzy houses and make a new album that resembles their old ways and stop being a bunch of little money hungrey little biatches . thank you good night :)

avatar

tavio123

thats just fucked up to say man. metallica looked up to maiden and did a tribute album along with others for them. i dont care if anyone agrees,i just think thats a bit cold.

Not only is Maiden better, it isn't even close. Metallica sold out long ago and apparently stopped practicing. They aren't connected to their audience anymore. They just enjoy being rich.

I just saw Maiden live and it was non-stop amazing music. Bruce sings as well as he ever did, maybe better.

stillrock

Back in "the day," I would have said Bruce is out of his mind. Now, though, I fully agree. While Metallica has made its' fan base by changing with the times and moving with what ever wind prevails, Maiden has remained true to their roots, making music that is as good as ever. And, live in concert, Bruce can hit all the notes (and sounds better at the end of the show than he did at the beginning!) whereas James Hetfield's vocals sound bad. Lastly, the Final Frontier totally pwned Death Magnetic!

spinethief

Bruce challenged David Lee Roth to a sword fight...seriously.
He enjoys being a rock star and taking the piss. Maiden has better bass lines and tone, but not better than Megadeth's. And Megadeth is in the big 4. So it seems Bruce is comparing apples to coconuts. Both make an excellent pie. Let's be more specific compare time appropriate albums like Powerslave and Ride the Lightning. Both bands firing on all cylinders. And Cliff Burton compared to Steve Harris, that's a fair contest.
In the alternate Universe where Metallica toured with Maiden, Cliff Burton is still alive because Bruce Dickinson has a pilots license.
FYI Powerslave is the first cassette I ever bought and I still know all the lyrics..Metallica was just too heavy for me back in the day.

Fru Stra Ta

Oh what to say, what to say? Well speaking as a fan I like both bands but am more apt to play Iron Maiden over Metallica. As far as the quote from Bruce, seriously, who cares? Whether he meant it or was having one of those days it's his right to say what he wants. I read all these comments attacking bruce but the boys in Metallica aren't all saints either. James and Lars both have quite the mouth on them and have been in the spotlight with the roles being reversed. This is the music industry and it is the nature of the beast to make waves. Besides if you truly want to listen to a true egomaniac than hop on the the Kiss train and tune in to Gene Simmons. Gene makes Bruce, James and Lars seem like lightweights in comparison.

Why is it that everyone thinks Metallica is great? Of course everyone knows that the first albums were pretty heavy, but that’s because they were heavily influenced by Dave Mustaine. Why do you think Metallica started “exploring” other styles? It’s because the Mustaine and Burton material had run out and they needed to make more money. In addition, the only one in the band with talent was James. Take time and listen to Metallica’s drummer, which is overshadowed by the guitar players’ tone, and you will quickly realize that Ulrich has no talent. Then go on and listen to Kirk. People think he’s good but he’s being carried by Hetfield. When it comes time to play solos, he gets help from the wah pedal. When it comes to playing live, lets just say that there are better sounding bands at talent shows. Kirk gets lost and Hetfield gets carried away with with his “oh yeah’s” and whoe ho ho’s”. People need to stop hoping and living in the past.If you’re still in doubt, listen to St. Anger.
“Yeah, but Master of Puppets was great!”
In that case, I recommend that you listen to Andy Warhol by David Bowie.

I have to admit Lars is the Ringo Starr of Metal. LOL

All you posters ripping Bruce for "putting down" Metallica need to re-read the article. He just said he thought Maiden is better. He did not say Metallica was bad. He did not even come close to stating anything negative about Metallica. Both bands can still be great within the context of Bruce's statement.

Mihály Szabó

Is this serious? Who cares who's got a bigger dick? They're both living legends, influenced millions and had their highs and lows. Fuck Dickinson's inferiority complex.

avatar

pmt1963

I happen to love both bands, I actually got James and Kirks autographs and James came up to our hotel room guitar in hand. They had opened up for OZZY back in Cleveland, the concert kicked ass. The opening acts stayed at a Holiday In and there was a club inside called Barney Google’s where they would hang out. I also got to interact with Bruce who had just joined Maiden, during the concert he ran into the seats on the left side of the stage ware me and my buddy were sitting he was looking right at us my buddy was pumping his fist and Bruce pumping his back towards my friend and I yelled out to him Sampson and he looked discussed shook his head and ran back towards the stage.

Maiden never compramised their music
Metallica sold out with several albums after Justice

Maiden brings a lot more elements to metal than just speed. They transport you to where the song takes place and also educate you with the lyrics (Alexander The Great for instance).

Contest over - Maiden wins

Bonus points for Maiden. They paved the way for Metallica by being part of the NWOBHM movement in which Mettalica looked up to in their infancy as a band.

avatar

pmt1963

Do any of you know the story of baby Bruce D. talking shit about Ozzy during OZ Fest? Sharon had the power shut off during their set here in Phoenix and Zack was ready to destroy the wanker. Bruce needs to think before opening his suck.

avatar

Scream Evil

Bruce pull your fu$#ing head out of your ASS! You cocky ungrateful million dollar rock * I wish Nikko or Harris would reel him back into planet earth! This type of stuff really shakes up my nerves,I don't think I'll purchase another Maiden album now!

avatar

Scream Evil

Oh my Lord Bruce!I'm for surely more a Maiden fan than i'am Metallica mate but when James said Maiden sucks some odd 25-30yrs ago he was full of piss&vinegar &of course booze! I can't believe Bruce @ age 50 something is saying this now,I see this nothing more than jealously & publicity for Yet another one of Maidens best of albums! I'm wondering if this has something to do with the Big 4 events,& Bruce is getting jealous & wants some press on Maidens new best of album?

avatar

pwyndham

Metallica is for boring old washed up hippy metalheads.

avatar

pwyndham

Iron Maiden is of course better than Metallica in my book anyway. When I heard Piece of Mind back in 84', it kicked my ass and I bought a guitar the next year and have been playing ever since. Maiden songs are better and I find myself listening to Maiden a hell of a lot more than Metallica. Metallica had four good albums. After And Justice For All, it's complete shite. Maidens got a ton of great albums. Better all around, no contest.

avatar

brichard

i think both bands are great but i'm leaning more towards iron maiden the music is very melodic and the lyricism is amazing

maiden is amazing!!

nakash

@redhub1
I can not recall Hetfield dissing Maiden (I remember Metallica rift with Motley Crue but not Maiden) especially taking into account the fact that both Lars and James were huge fans of NWoBHM it seems a bit unlikely. But even if Hetfield said something bad about IM it was decades ago when he was a 20 something youngster... and Bruce (52!!!) says it NOW. Feel the difference .... and grow up a little bit yourself bro :)...it's just about music and arguing which band is better seems a bit immature and childish :)
Peace

avatar

Sadistic

No contest. Any guitar play Maiden EVER had could play a better solo than Kirk Hammett. Steve Harris is a way better bass player than MOST of Metallica's are/were. And if you really think Lars is a better drummer than Nicko please do us all a favor and slap yourself really hard in the face.

avatar

erickbandeira

Bruce is right!

avatar

lextech76

Both bands have huge accomplishments, differ styles and sound. To say one is better then the other, that can not be done. As long as it is metal to our ears then it is good.

avatar

johnnycnote

Is it really surprising that the front man for Iron Maiden claims his is the better band? Obviously, when dealing with *opinions*, no one is right and no one is wrong. Personally, I prefer Iron Maiden. While I can *appreciate* Metallica, I've never been a fan. But neither is anywhere close to MY band, Last Rites!

avatar

redhub1

Maiden. It's not even a real contest. Metallica are cool with the middle-aged white collar set. Real metal fans know where it's at. Murray and Smith vs. Hammet? No contest. Hammet sucks! Dickinson vs. Hetfield? Hetfield can't even sing! LMAO Oh, and by the way, all of you who are bitching that Bruce shouldn't have said anything like this don't have a very good memory. Hetfield said the same thing when Metallica started out and he dissed Maiden. He didn't just say that they were better than Maiden. He actually said that Maiden sucks. Maiden have never mocked Metallica on a recording. Metallica have. So where are all the guys calling James an asshole?!? Because he is one. Up the irons!

nakash

Bruce is wrong... not because Metallica are better than IM or vice versa... he is wrong 'cause he shouldn't say it this way... it looks more like 13 years old's rant than the opinion of full grown men. Couple o'years ago he said the same about Ozzy and the band had to suffer the consequences of his stupid behavior. So yes, Bruce might be the legendary musician but he is an a**hole as a person.

avatar

mgordon514

Damned lead singers always running their mouths. (Not saying Dickinson's wrong, though.)

avatar

Deyo

I love both bands, and they are both awesome live...
Metallica named Maiden on numerous occasions a major influence and always had nothing but good to say about Maiden, and that is why i find it sad that Bruce finds it necessary to trash Metallica and it's pathetic. Bruce should concentrate more on Maiden and less on Metallica. Or is it maybe fear of the "Four Horsemen"!

avatar

dolphingod

You guys that think IM is better than Metallica seriously need to "get off the pipe". Hetfield alone is a superior lyricist and musician than the whole of Ed's boys combined.

avatar

chaosbringer546

is he f**k IM VS METALLICA both good bands but my vote with out a dought is IM.. they have a far better guitarist drummer bassist vocalist and they even have there own areoplane ED FORCE1 and not to metion a masscot that all IM fans love EDDIE ! FEAR OF THE DARK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kruedog

Well, I always seen Bruce as one of the greatest singers, but Metallica influenced me more to play and got me more to Heavy Metal. Therefor my vote goes to Metallica. But when Pantera broke out in 1990 with CFH...

avatar

thrasher666

Well, Maiden's been around longer, has released more albums, more consistently, over a longer period of time. And they have 'Ed!

avatar

mklotz

I am in agreement that they are bette than Metallica. I see a more consistent body of work. I like Metallica, but oh well.

avatar

stevealvarez

Maiden. No question. Next.

avatar

Steve Dunlap

Bruce is correct. Maiden heads and tails better both in musicianship and in the songwriting/lyrics department.

avatar

Jedizen07

Even Lars admitted ( on Flight 666 ) that they (i.e. Iron Maiden ) were cooler than " other " bands around. I figured Lars meant that IM was cooler than Metallica. I loved Master of Puppets and Kill Em All. But Iron Maiden is WAY better, both in studio and live.

avatar

6xxpanteraxx6

id also like to point out that a whole bunch of bads honored iron maiden by doing a cover cd of their song. Of these bands include metallica. way to treat a band that honored you.

avatar

6xxpanteraxx6

What a fucking prick. i love metal and for him hating on another metal band he is a duesh. Metallica has many amazing songs that are metal irong maiden has some amazing songs that are "metal". I have more respect for a band that doesnt talk shit than one that has a one guy that thinks he can talk shit cause he is the singer of iron maiden. Go to hell you duesh prick. If you wernt wasting your breath talking shit you could be singing bring metal to us.

avatar

tedrackley

It's hard to say who is better with two bands with such completely different styles. Even though both fall under the banner of "rock" or "metal".
