Cigar Box: Celebrate the Growth of Cigar Box Nation — and Enter to Win a Cigar Box Guitar!
Sir Paul McCartney played a cigar box guitar at the 12.12.12 concert in New York City.
We're back ...
We've been building guitars day and night. We've hired a few apprentices and inhaled enough sawdust, lead solder and varnish fumes to kill a man.
Damn, I love cigar box guitars — building them, playing them and writing about them. Since last time, we've made a few pickups, and we're still working on finding that "fat" tone before we write the “how to” about pickup making.
There have been some big happenings in the CBG (Cigar Box Guitar) world during our writing hibernation. Who didn’t see Paul McCartney play a cigar box guitar with the members of Nirvana at the 12.12.12 concert in New York City — and then again, a few days later, on Saturday Night Live? Steven Tyler was also spotted with a cigar box guitar.
There are a few giveaways going on, so you can get your CBG grove on — for free!
Twenty years ago, Shane Speal built his first cigar box guitar. Ten years ago, he started a Cigar Box Guitar group on Yahoo! that kickstarted the whole CBG movement. Nearly five years ago, Cigar Box Nation was founded. Now that it's grown to the 10,000-member mark, Cigar Box Nation, in partnership with Speal and C.B. Gitty Crafter Supply, is hosting a contest where they're giving away cigar box guitars and copies of Speal's new album, Empty Wooden Box.
The deadline to enter is Monday, April 29, so don't delay! To enter, head here!
But wait, there's another giveaway going on! Vaudeville Picture Show is filming the documentary Across the Tracks, traveling from Seattle to New York by foot and by train over 15 days, filming interviews and performances along the way. They will be traveling and playing one of our guitars during filming. At the end of production, they will be giving it away!
While we are working out the details of pickup making, our next column will be a how-to for making a cigar box amp, plus we'll round up the 2013 spring and summer cigar box guitar festivals.
Stay tuned — It's going to get loud!
Brian Saner owns Saner Cigar Box Guitars, which makes custom handmade guitars and amps using local dry-aged wood in every guitar. These guitars are handmade and might have imperfections, but that's what makes them unique. Once you hear the howl of a CBG, you might not want to play a Fender or Gibson again. Get one at sanercigarboxguitars.com, devildownrecords.com/guitars and Main Street Gallery. Check out his Facebook page.
