Daath's Emil Werstler: Betcha Can't Play This!
Emil Werstler: "The following lick is broken down into four parts (Measures 2, 3, 4, and 5). Even though there are a few passing/chromatic tones, measure 2 is outlining a D minor with an added 9. At the end of this measure you'll notice I pivot with my index finger, landing directly on the Major third of the A7b9 on beat 1, which is the best way to nail a chord change. Then, I'm ascending and descending Django style through the A7b9 arpeggio as shown in measure 3. Measure 4 shows a change in gears as I descend in rhythmic groupings of 6 using the G Diminished Arpeggio to create tension. Finally, measure 5 shows that I'm resolving up a half step to the tonic (root note) of D-7 followed immediately by a major 7 arpeggio which (other than the root) we are borrowing from F Major 7. This ascending arpeggio emphasizes the 9 as I finally descend down the basic blues scale before the final whole step bend."
About Emil Werstler:
Lead guitarist of the band, Daath (Roadrunner Records/Century Media), Emil has made a serious name for himself in the guitar world in a very short time. Performing worldwide with his main project Daath on notable tours such as Ozzfest and along side well established acts such as Unearth, Devil Driver, Dark Funeral, and Job for a Cowboy, Emil continues to gain strength and credibility as one of the most sought after guitarists in his genre to date. Recent projects Emil has been featured on include Austrian Death Machine and guest solos on Guitars That Ate My Brain, a 2009 release from Magna Carta Records, as well as Arsis' album United in Regret. In addition, Emil was one of the few featured artists asked to perform at Experience PRS 2008, a great feat for a guitarist in his scene.
