Frankly, the advice of Mr. Goldberg is dangerous and off the mark. Telling band members to "discuss" copyright splits and ratios of contribution may be ineffective and lead to unenforceable verbal copyright contribution agreements. This article is severely lacking in that in many cases a written agreement is necessary and the article does not mention having written agreements at all. The problem arises especially in group composition situations and is exacerbated when certain contributors are passive or temporary members of the band. If you value your creative works, do not discuss it only, get it in writing and get an attorney to assist you so you can be certain it is documented in a way that is legally defensible.
