My friends and I (Chord Kicker) used to play it the same way, only for the lead our guitarist (Randy Monkman) would rip off his capo ( some kinda snap on) and then go nuts on the lead. To this day I've never heard anyone play the lead to Hotel California the right way. I think the lead is one of the best ever performed in any song. You can argue all you want but think of when this song was written.
