Daath guitarists Eyal Levi and Emil Werstler are about to unleash their new all-instrumental collaboration, Levi/Werstler Avalanche of Worms on Magna Carta Records on April 20, 2010. For this release, the duo has teamed with legendary drummer Sean Reinert (Cynic, ex-Death). To celebrate this upcoming release, we're pleased to present to you an exclusive first-listen to their new single, "Loathsome Little Fiend." (Listen to the full track below.) If that wasn't enough, we also got Werstler to break-down the song's main arpeggiated section. Have a listen to the track, watch Werstler's lesson, and see if you can play along. Here's what Werstler has to say about the video lesson: "The following video and transcription is for the arpeggiated section in 'Loathsome Little Fiend' (0:46 -1:06). What makes this section an interesting candidate for exploring is the technique and how it allows a more fluid sound. To properly execute the feel of this lick, you need to utilize left hand, right hand coordination; for this lick is not completely picked nor is it completely legato. By not picking all of the notes and relying on our fretting hand to "connect the dots via hammer-on or pull-off." We now have an approach that is more fluid then picking yet more percussive then a legato run."
"You can also alter the feel and sound of your playing by adjusting the velocity of your pick attack," says Werstler. "In this case, I'm going for an accent oriented "juggling" sound. If you want a smoother sound, you can match the volume of your left hand's hammer-ons and pull-offs with the volume of your pick attack. You'd be surprised at how many renowned legato players are actually brilliant pickers - They just know how to conceal it."
