Deborah Coleman, Laura Chavez and Joanna Connor? All three are AMAZING blues cats! And don't forget Jennifer Batten - Rock Goddess of Michael Jackson's HIStory Tour and co-conspirators with Jeff Beck. And don't forget the darling lady from the Go-Go's - Kathy Valentine! And you absolutely CAN'T leave out the girls from L7 - Donita Sparks & Suzi Gardner. And what about classicsl giant Sharon Isbin and bluegrass queen Maybelle Carter? Maybe these aren't "unheard" of enough for a list of "unknown" guitarists, but they've all rocked my world! Love the list! Esp. after growing up in a house where I had heard was men bitching about how women "couldn't play"! peace

Briana Alexis is one of the shining stars in ROCK music. With tight rhythms and soulful melodic leads, Briana competes and kicks ass with the heavy hitters in the LA guitar scene. you name it she's got there number .. I just dig watching her play.. She throws a clinic at every show and every video that I check out.. Viva Briana

Good choices of girls!
I have to admit that Anouck André deserves a place here, as so as Nili Brosh.
Both have a high level at improvising and killer chops!

Les Paul Gibson

Briana Alexis has the chops and knows how to rock.

Liked Joanne Shaw Taylor, Nori Bucci & (especially)Gretchen Menn.
You should know Chantel McGregor! Lots of videos on YouTube including an awesome version of SRV's "Lenny" (include "boom boom club" in the search box or find it in the favourites playlist on my YouTube channel!)

Ooo. Thanks for the tip. I will check it out. You should know, some of the women included in this article were introduced to me through comments! So keep 'em coming!

Great to see such diversity, sadly I knew someone would complain that they weren't all shredders.

avatar

Laura B. Whitmore

We can't all be shredders (self included). But we still love guitar!

What is up with the clothing change on the Nori Bucci video?

I mean, it looks like it's supposed to be a live bar band video, but when you see her from the left, she's wearing a black long sleeve sweater, and from the right a white t-shirt......

Maybe she got hot!

Friends Like These

Amanda Monaco, in addition to being a brilliant guitarist and live performer, is also composing the musical FRIENDS LIKE THESE which had its first reading at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles in May, 2012. She is the indespensible music director of this new orginal work about women’s friendships. At first blush, it seems like an extremely simple topic. But for any woman who takes a few moments to think about her friends, the different relationships she has with them, the roles they have played in her life and the ways in which those relationships have shaped her throughout her life…..it’s instantly clear that this is not a simple topic at all and rich material for Monaco's fertile talent (www.friendslikethese.org).

That's very cool. Thanks for letting us know!

WTF, GW you blew it again. Where the HELL is Orianthi. She is one of the few guitarists that can play with Steve Vai, and show him up. Forgot about female guitarists, she is in a league of her own. How about Guitar player from another planet. Her playing is extraterrestrial.(did I spell that right) And she is hotter than most, if not all models.

Laura B. Whitmore

You are right! I am horribly remiss! I will have to rectify this as soon as possible. Love Orianthi!

GEENGADE

Yes I saw this and what a waste of time 85 percent didn't even sound like they can carry a tune. Very disappointing they didn't even shred any of them. I know there are many more to choose from. What a very poor selection of choices.

Laura B. Whitmore

Don't be negative! If you have some suggestions, post 'em on up here. There'll be another Exposed coming soon!

Faith148

Very cool to see such a wide range of styles! From Amanda Monaco's experimental approach to Erica Chase's uplifting pop hooks, it's exciting to see how ten different guitarists can create something from what essentially starts as the same set of strings.

I agree! Pretty amazing, right?
