Friday night, June 20, Foo Fighters took the stage at the Firefly Festival stage in Dover, Delaware, and surprised the crowd by playing a rocking collection of covers. “We’re gonna do something we’ve never done before," Dave Grohl said. "For the next 20 minutes, we’re a bar band called the Holy S-–s that plays classic rock songs.”
One of my prime objectives when writing music for my band Revocation is to try to push the envelope and come up with sounds, ideas, chord patterns, progressions and riffs that have been rarely explored within the thrash metal genre.
A good way to do this is to use seventh chords, which are rarely heard in metal. This month, I’d like to demonstrate a few cool ways one can use one particularly cool- and tense-sounding seventh chord in heavy, thrash-style riffs.
Check out this interesting live mashup by an eight-piece band called Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds. The band, which is fronted by Arleigh Kincheloe, blended Rage Against the Machine's "Bulls On Parade" with Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" during their performance at the 2014 Mountain Jam Festival on June 7.
