acesteele wrote:5 years ago my dream amp was the 1974 Marshall 50 watt, 4 input head that I've owned for the last 25 years. She's not the prettiest thing in the world, but she sure sounds sweet w/ a Marshall 4-12 w/ 30 watt Celestions. We've dubbed her "Ugly Betty" but among the 3 other 70's JMP Marshall heads & the bugera 333XL, She sure has the tone!

arent those like 4k? i know jaymz hetfield has one.

the problem i have with most high gain tube amps is that they all seem to appeal to the scooped mids/high treble crowd. For my next amp i want something that punches you in the face with raging mids like the type of tones Black Flag or Queens of the Stone age get out of their guitar.

QOTSA have a slightly dirty almost clean sound going for them, plenty of twang. I wouldn't call their sound high gain and I bet they wouldn't use a high gain amp to get that sound. Their tone is rather fuzzy, a lot like a pushed tube clean sound with a vintage Fuzz Face or Big Muff in front.

you'd probably like a good marshall played through some vintage 30 type speakers. FJA modded JCM 800 or a DSL or TSL thru a cab with eminence governors/man-o-wars would probably get you warm and fuzzy. i'm even using low gain jj preamp tubes and KT77's in mine and i still have a good amount of mid slamming.

Oh I know, I haven't even heard their new stuff. I personally think it sounds like they recorded their stuff with a Mesa on the clean/crunch channel with a fuzz before it. It's got that texture to it. From the first post I quoted it seemed like you thought that they used a high gain amp on the lead channel, which I don't think is the case. For twang, I was thinking the track No One Knows. The fuzz sound is undeniable on tracks like Little Sister and Burn the Witch.

sounds to me like it could be a marshall or laney with a fuzz. or mesa too i guess. it made me think laney but laneys pretty much sound like marshalls. i dont really have alot of experience with mesas. not enough to recognize them on recordings anyways.

I looked it up, he uses mostly low gain Ampeg Amps like the VT 22, ive seen videos of then and they have that unmistakable midrange punch, and i bet if you load them up wtih pedals they do a great high gain. The sad thing is i could probably afford one within a few months if i got a job, but i just dont have the room for one, 120 watts is just too much for someone whos leaving for a dorm in a year.
