Looking for guitar with wide string spacing ...

Postby Mob 47 on Mon Apr 27, 2009 7:43 pm

I have a late 60s yamaha fg-140 and the string spacing is too narrow for my fat ass fingers to do some stuff I'd like to, what brands should I be looking at for wider string spacings that is not made for bottleneck playing (super high action Dobro/National style) or (obviously?) nylon string.

Either old names or current brands, doesn't matter to me.

Thanks.

I met a guy that had the same problem. Way huge hands and fat fingers. He bought a Guild 12 string and set it up like a 6 leaving off the other set. It worked okay for him. I have small hands and it did feel kind of big to me. He said he was going to have a new 6 slot nut cut for it and a 6-pin bridge installed, but I don't know if he ever did. Just go play a 12 and see what you think. Other than that all I can think of are classical guitars.

Alot of modern acoustic guitars are 1 3/4" at the nut and 2 1/4" at the bridge. Are you looking for wider than that?

I believe he said he didn't want a guitar built for nylon strings.

Checkout the Seagull SWS Maritime Mini Jumbo. It has a wider string spacing at the nut than 1 3/4". Acoustic Guitar magazine gave it a great review, all solid wood guitar for under grand. Might be worth looking into.

Hi Folks,
First time posting....

Id try to find a guitar with a 1 7/8ths nut and 2 3/8ths spacing at the saddle.
I have built a lot of acoustics with this spacing just for the very reasons you speak of.
Hands to big and spacing to tight.

Best
