Guitar in playing to a top notch singer writer and getting some licks is very hard to accomplish even if your under rated guitarist hum ohh like Derek St. Holmes who wrote all of Theodore Anthony Nugent material for guitar whose is another well you know they exist and this is why you don't bother the with putting your self totally out there. So putting a solo in front of your front man is a no no. I guess Elton John is another pick guitarist Davey Johnstone. Soloing for a top notch performer you might as well pick Greg Howe the Back Street Boys, Jeff Beck all of Led Zeppelins material , Steve Vai - Alcatrazz and theses guys soloed.

You're retarded.

Soloing is not a chord dual thing. These guys fill that void soloing fills the void. Empty space not a time continuum. There are songs that no solo is needed only a minor riff or leaky lead. Like grunge.

Guys like you ruin music for others with your over analyzing bullshit.

I just chose one as a coin toss. Martin being so young vs the "studio? pro" Randall I just voted for Martin to see the results.

I must also comment on nursetom61 who had to wait thru a commercial in the MIDDLE of the song? That's kinda crossin' the line there Guitar World.

For the last month or so, Guitar World has been forcing me to sit through a "targeted commercial" before it proceeds to the story I wanted to read.

Fair enough for "premium content" but not when you click on a voter's poll which is kind of of inane in nature and now will make me even more selective on future clicks knowing I will have to sit through commercials before I see the content.
I will put up with that for guitar hero conversations or a music lesson but will probably no longer click on product reviews or "polls like these".

At the beginning when GW initiated this pre-commercial it was OK, but to get to this poll, MY mandatory commercial was over 1 1/2 minutes long!!

I can handle a Gibson Les Paul picture following me everywhere I surf from companies like ZZOUNDS, Amazon and Sweetwater because at least its a banner ad that I would have to click on (and sometimes do)... but this new GW approach is a little much.

Nothing soars trough my head like Elliot's solo on Reeling in the Years. After all these years it brings out a smiling head bob every time...

I agree with Darth. I voted for "Reelin' in the Years" for two reasons: It has both cool riffs and a memorable solo full of signature licks that are essential for any beginning lead guitarist.

Although the main riff to "Aqualung" is legendary, I had to refresh myself with the solo.

I just listened to both songs, although I do know both. I wanted to make a better informed vote. I just wanted to listen to both with the poll in mind. I have to go with Steely Dan on this one. I really love Jethro Tull and Aqualung is in fact on of my favorite songs. But RITY's is a better solo.

OMG! This may be off topic, but. I was listening to Aqualung and right in the middle of the song. It stops playing and a very annoying commercial starts playing. This is just so wrong. I can understand (almost) the desire to make money by playing commercials. But to play a video or MP3 and right in the middle of the song (I was 1:20 into the song) to have this very annoying commercial play. It was for Vodka and I don't drink so this commercial will not get me to buy their product. If I did drink I would go out of my way to not drink this vodka simply because their commercial pissed me off. Please, Please GW stop these annoying commercials or at least change where and how you display them.

Tough call for me because these are two of my all-time favorites. I'm leaning towards "Reelin' in the Years" but I'd be happy no matter which one wins.

Both classic in their own right. Reelin' the song is not my preferred genre but I certainly appreciate & respect the technical prowess & free flow of the solo. It's hyper-appropriate for the rhythm & feel of the track. I hear some songs & wonder what a different approach to the solo might sound like. Reelin' is not one of those songs. Aqualung depresses me with it's lyrics but it's a great song. Routine solo though so Reelin' gets my vote.

To me, Elliot's solo just soars with beautiful tone and tasty licks. Aqualung, I can never remember the guitar solo, just the kick-ass main riff.
