Not sure the rationale for this contest--I suppose to keep readers engaged (or enraged as the case may be). For me, as a guitarist, I could not really do justice to ranking these solos--it's like ranking other types of art. I would add though, that' I'd be impressed with a guitarist that could crank out heartfelt and soulful solos in various genres like jazz, country, metal. Now that would be a means to compare artists technical abilities to include soloing. But this contest here just seems weak or at least poorly thought out.

This was a joke right?

Weeps is top 5 in my Beatles list but to this day I can't stand the shrill sound emanating from the left channel in my headphones during the chorus & fade out. As for Rage... no.

I'm also wondering about the Angus Young snub on this top 64 list. Let There Be Rock (the track) has a trio of sizzling solos. Even Thunderstruck is worthy. Back in Black too. I'm thru.

Solos about guitars are the real fads of the sixties. Basically it’s the Figaro of guitar playing that people want to play their guitar and give the name bragging rights to claim of fame. It’s a good metaphor but hasn't the generations of guitarist done so by going digital. Soloing in any key any note any chord is just what Chuck did when he raped all those pretty pentatonic scales that we use for granted in shredding. You say arpeggio I say sweep. We all shred together to open our abilities to hone down on. I love it when I see a shredder and they are shredding for their guitar.

Shredding? are you a 12 year old kid or something dude?

Loose the "forced to watch commercials" especially when they have absolutely nothing to do with music!

out of subject but... where the f is 25 or 6 to 4 by chicago??? that guitar solo is simply phenomenal!! shame that alot of amazing guitar solo's/songs get ignored in favor of mainstream bands.. (chicago is mainstream as well but not recognized for solo's such as this one)

“That’s me playing a solo by flicking the toggle switch back and forth"

Yeah, that's real talent. My God, putting EC up against this poser is like… well, the brain fails to draw an appropriate simile.

Where's Mark Knopfler with his Solo in Sultans of Swing? He's one of the greatest, god-blessed guitarrists of our time...

avatar

JesseB

he's in there somewhere :)

avatar

Darth Compton

Yup, it's in there, one of the higher rankers too.

I'm really irritated when i read these comments, haha.
Tom Morello just makes a collection of noises?
It is something which has never been done with a guitar before..
Very original and even more important, very creative.

You ought to try banging on your guitar with a ball peen hammer. It's something which has never been done with a guitar before... very original and even more important, very creative.

haha, true. i think i forgot to mention that it is musical and rhythmic at the same time. but of course that's my opinion ;)

Although Bulls of Parade is not his best solo.

avatar

shadowofaday

Not one of my favorite RATM songs... It it was killing in the name it would have my vote... But this solo didn't really impress me that much. Clapton wins.

avatar

The_Gudok

Er, but there is no solo in the RATM song!

nursetom61

162 people have no idea what a good solo sounds like. At the time of my comment, that's how many people voted for Tom Morelo's aural assault. This is not a song let alone a solo. And to compare it to the Beatles ( Eric Clapton) solo. All I can say is Wow (as I scratch my head) Are these 162 votes by guitarists? Are these just fans of Rage Against The Machine. Either way try listening to music that is really MUSIC.

rockerjt

I can't believe this is even a question, nor can I believe that NoMorello's collection of noises would even constitute a guitar solo; it is more of an atmospheric piece than anything, not musical in any way. 20% for Bulls? Wow. I am not even a Clapton fan, and I think he nailed it to the point that While My Guitar Gently Weeps is up there with Comfortably Numb as far as solos go.

Unskippable, unmutable video ads on web pages are one of the most obnoxious things that have ever plagued the internet. Please stop that before I stop visiting this site entirely.

Monster comeback for Johnny B Goode! Practically switched percentages late last night. Just like Brian May did. *thoughtfully rubs chin*

While My Guitar Gently Weeps is my fave Clapton solo, and it gets better live.

I'm glad I came across your comment. Chuck Berry did not win, Led Zep did. I had the songs in the wrong spot. It has been corrected in the story.

jefffos

No, Chuck Berry SHOULD HAVE WON! That's probably why it was written that way. Nobody can wrap their head around the fact Page beat Berry at ANYTHING!!! Except maybe stealing Willie Dixon songs. From here on out, this is a farce. I guess I should be used to it by now, that fat, hillbilly, joke Elvis has gotten credit for everything Chuck did, so why not have Page win. Chuck's been back doored so may times, I'm surprised his insides haven't fallen out...

nursetom61

Chuck Berry is the "REAL" King of Rock and Roll. The 1950's White America would not allow a Black man to be named "King of Rock and Roll" so Elvis still has the monica. Chuck Berry is one of the most innovative guitar players in the history of music.

avatar

Darth Compton

I was cool with either, but glad it was corrected :D
