Soloing to the intro to a song has always been a least effective measure of to add performance to a song. So there is a possibility of no lyrics that always works. Playing your solo to a song that the tempo never changing even the chords never, differ has always been a safe bet for soloing. Anyone trying these ideas have gone to the side of the road and forgotten. No one really cares how this stuff is or as important as to only the song. There basically a waste in both methods. If your going to soloing your part right from the start or save it while everyone is joy riding to the same bass line good luck with that its old scratch. This is some really out dated material. Not recommended for players.

The "Sympathy for the Devil" solo has always sounded like Jimmy Page to me. Even right before it starts, Jagger says something that sounds like, "Get down Jimmy."

how come "Rock Bottom" from UFO's "Strangers in the Night" isn't in the competition? Great solo!

That and Uli Roth's Sails Of Charon are under-appreciated, imo. My guess is they aren't popular enough to have garnered enough votes to be on the original Reader's 100 list. But they're both in my top twenty :P

Another one of my favorites that I find under appreciated is Golden Earring's Twilight Zone solo.

Eric Johnson's work soars like an eagle while the greatest rock guitarist of all time sadly is stuck in the mud in this song. Too many stops, irregular pauses & squeaks emanating from his 'caster. Not my favorite Stones song by any stretch. Gimme Shelter, It's Only Rock n Roll, anything but Sympathy.
