Love them both Hendix amazing Always but SRV is the best there ever was ♥ You will have to check out Tommy Katona (aka) Texas Flood band!!!

Both solos here are the turning point of these soloist careers. Well it sadly ended the same for the both. When you crutch yourself of an American past time musical which of is played for and honored this is every guitarist ambition. A solo performance up there by all means everybody who plays guitar plays the National Anthem. It’s a great solo piece. For practice or just for learning the song is an actually following the words that were put in later by Francis Scott Key.

There wouldnt be stevie without jimmy? Maybe... but stevie is still a better guitarrist... SRV all the way!

It would be a tougher choice if it was Power to Love or Machine Gun off Band of Gypsy's even though the Star Spangled Banner is an iconic performance. But I've got to give this one to SRV. Blues was all but dead when he came out with Texas Flood. Now there are thousands of Stevie clones and that alone speaks volumes. I'm gonna have a tougher time with anybody that comes up against EVH's Eruption. That song changed everything and deserves to win it all imho.

I'd like to ask. why? where's the emotion, where does it take you? does it creep into your soul? because that's what a winning 'solo' of this contest should be... not fuckin' tapping and all that jaz & looking cool. Sure it amazed that crowd that were into that band but still... just my opinion.

Knew this would be a tough choice when I saw the matchup days ago. Listened to them both & I'm not sure if it's because I listened to SRV first but the mood Texas Flood put me into kinda made listening to Jimi play that again for the umpteenth time seem too busy. I may have come to the same conclusion hearing Eruption after Texas Flood today. It just hit the spot for me right now & I voted for Stevie. Innovative & edgy & all that comes with a Jimi performance, our national anthem on that stage at that point in history is a one of kind moment that will never be equaled.

Jimi gets my vote because what he did on that guitar was so-far-out-there. We STILL scratch our heads. But, SRVs' solo is so soulful, warm and FAT! I understand the rules and how it has to play out, but this match up is nuts. It's going to get nuttier.
RIP, Jimi & Stevie

Got to comment that there are a heap of great solos missing from this list. No Nuno Bettencourt at all? Crazy!

Too tough to decide, Star spangled banner will go down in history forever, let alone texas flood is just a slow blues with everyone elses licks (played better than them by stevie obviously).. SRV = technically better player but not original. what a trip the SSB is, i vote jimi.

My sentiment exactly, billkropp. Unbelievable to me that Stevie would get the votes on this - when he wasn't copying Albert King he was trying to sound like Jimi and you can hear him doing exactly that, and not very imaginatively, on this solo. Yeah, Stevie was incredibly soulful and had amazing tone but he was no innovator and frankly, I get bored with his obvious note choices. Jimi borrowed from his influences just like everybody else but he always took it to a new a level and created something fresh and unique. Stevie was a shadow created by Jimi's brilliance. It's seems a shame to me that people are overlooking this.

I SO Agree with You doubletrouble5150 Always Alive in My Heart
Stevie, no matter what mood you are in will always Soothe Your Soul
Also Stevie, was so humble. He never would say he is better than Jimi... SRV the Greatest Forever ♥

This is a joke, right?? I mean, you guys are kidding, right?

Jimi Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock, and people are trying to cap on Jimi?

Jimi Hendrix was the headlining act for Woodstock. That is a fact.

Jimi's version of the Star Spangled Banner is the one of the most influential pieces of guitar work EVER. PERIOD.

I cannot count the number of guitar players I have heard say that piece had a huge impact on their concept of the guitar. What he did with that little bit of equipment and just the guitar.

Please give me a break!! Every time I watch that film of Jimi playing that piece I always, ALWAYS, catch him doing something I never noticed before.

And that is only one tune from one gig. I didn't even mention the rest of the body of work.

Without Jimi Hendrix there wouldn't have even been a Stevie Ray Vaughn.

nursetom61

Really! I usually would not vote against SRV. But this is Hendrix playing the National Anthem. One of my ancestors wrote the Star Spangled Banner (Frances Scott Key) Jimi could play chopsticks on the guitar and it would sound great. I probably would have voted Stevie against anybody else.

matt_boing_kpow

Definitely not star spangled banner! What a ridiculous choice when there are so many great original solos from Hendrix that would beat most of his guitar solo rivals.

Stevie ray vaughan wins this one easy

Boy, talk about apples and oranges!

Don't you think that Red House would be more appropriate to pair up with Texas Flood? Signature slow blues against signature slow blues?

avatar

yes, totally -- in a perfect world, that would be great. but as the story explains (and has explained every day since june 10), these daily matchups are based on a 64-song bracket, which you can see at the bottom of the story. they compete against each other, just like teams in a 64-team NCAA-style tournament, with the number 1 team going up against the number 64 team and so on. anyway, yes, this is an odd matchup. the round 2 matchups will be much more ... lets say "interesting"!

Thanks for the clarification. It's a good idea to read the rules once in a while!
