Now that GW did a study on us. Their magazine will now reflect how to better sell a single issue. Everyone has given up information so valuable that they have researched us like lab rats. But there still one question. What will GW do for you today?

I hope GW will have more to gain and get more subscribers from this experience. And this is will be the last time we will probably see a contest like this. The world has opened up to GW.

Where is Mark Knopfler in all this??? He's better than most guitarists that are left!!!!!

avatar

redoner

What about greatest bassists of all time poll?

avatar

gregmitchell

It's interesting to note how the songwriting seems to have provailed here, which is encouraging, seeing how great chops mean very little over the backdrop of a meaningless song.

avatar

movi

Is this - "who is the greatest guitarist or which band member has the largest fan following?"

Oh no i can't believe that Dave Mustaine defeated John Petrucci as far as guitaring is concerned(though i am a big fan of Megadeth and Dave )

avatar

movi

PS: Only genuine guitarists and Randy Rhoads' fans will digest this hard truth! \m/

The polling system is not fair! The panel of judges or the voters should be 'guitarists only' and not just the popular public opinion!!!! Having said that, can any guitarist on this earth have the guts to say they dislike 'Diary of Madman' or 'Blizzard of Ozz'??? Can you imagine anyone playing those songs like over the mountain, crazy train, revelation, mr. crowley, etc 30 years ago other than Randy Rhoads himself? And going by this, now tell me where Eddy Van Halen stands. RIP Randy, You are the Guitargod and your music lives on... \m/

avatar

kris101

Like yourself, I am a big Randy fan. "Diary" and "Blizzard" were both amazing records and it is sad that's all we got from Randy. (not counting the "quiet riot" recordings which were ok.
I would imagine most people voting on these polls are guitar players, as this is Guitar World. I wouldn't be browsing Guns n Ammos website if I'm not a gun owner nor have any interest in it. Although, I'm sure plenty of non players do vote on these polls.
Regardless, I've been playing for close to 20 years now, started since I was 10.
Given the GW criteria on this poll, I would have to go with Eddie Van Halen. Eddie changed the way the guitar was played and his influence was undeniable. From his customization of the guitar, to his tone, and simply the way he approached the instrument. He is definitely more influential. As far as pure skill, this is highly arguable because it's all based on preference. They are both masters of their instrument. If you want to consider pure skill, then Steve Vai would probably win, his songs are much harder to learn than any Eddie or Randy song.
Given the body of work, this is just not fair because Eddie is still play and putting out great (in my opinion) records and has a much bigger catalog of songs than Randy. As cliche as it may be, Eruption changed the way the instrument was played and influenced a whole new era of guitar playing, including Randy's playing.
This poll, if we're talking pure skill, I would go with Steve Vai (again personal opinion). But considering Influence and body of work: it really comes down to Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen

Randy Rhoads is GOD...Nuff Said!!!

villageking

I love Randy Rhoads but he lost to Uli Jon Roth ? Uli the guy that did fingers gymnastics , dive bombs , precise blistering speed scales, from classical runs to jazzy and exciting blues based solos? Speedies Coming 1973 Catch Your Train 1976 made young Van Halen jaw dropped, Sails Of Charon in 1977, need I compare more? For God sake Randy was talented I'm a fan but please recognized Uli Roth for what is right. I know by putting Randy Rhoads its all about your magazine commercial viability. Its all money, not Creativity!

Has Uli Roth a true living legend ever grace your front cover? NOP

Money rules, sick really.

Don't think this poll is meant to be taken seriously, as determining what guitar player is 'the best' is impossible, anyway. Just vote for whoever you think fills up the criteria listed in the articles the best and enjoy the exposure the guitarists get in the videos.

Oh, and for the people questioning Dave - He is, arguably, one of the most influencial metal players out there. He took rhythm playing to a whole new level both in early Metallica & Megadeth. There's a reason Metallica kept 6 of his songs even after they booted him.

Still, despite the fact that he's one of my favorite guitarists, I'd probably have to go with Iommi just because of how Dave essentially built on what he laid out.

avatar

the one and onl...

WOW.....like they say it's so g o o d. To. Be. a n y w h e r e. -i think I agree with some of what I read here. About shameless promotion and then that vs contemprry or remembered even.....I am glad to se it very spirited ...the debate....passion is not a waste of energy....the polls probably are too metal oriented and a lot of great guitar players aren t even well known.....styles change too...so the best version of like an iron butterfly song and classical gas and then theguy who inspired enrico caruso or the next great composer burning the midnight oil on his boss br series studio ........the cases being made in short are running the gammut and that is good for us. chriswich007

Thanks for the post! Never heard that one before. Not a big fan of Zappa, but I enjoyed that.

avatar

Con.e.lee

I don't see Jeff Buckley either and what the fuck ?

avatar

shadow1029

Personally, I'd like to see Iommi win. Does he deserve to? Maybe not, but this whole 16 is easily debatable. He also is missing two finger tips, and everyone else in this 16 have perfectly intact fingers. But thats me.

avatar

Con.e.lee

Right on ! Speaking of missing fingers why isn't Django Reinhardt included in this poll? And now that I am thinking about blowing your mind Gypsy Jazz where is Birelli Lagrene???

avatar

shadow1029

Django lost to Les Paul... Lagrene wasnt in there i believe. But Django put up a good fight. I think shouldve beat Les Paul on playing abilities. But Les Paul isnt a scrub either, as well as his innovations to electric guitar.

avatar

Con.e.lee

Okay there's a hint of redemption here now . Damn and wow they lost me at Zappa. Wanna buy some Mandees Bob?
I cant stop laughing just oh my gawd so fucking ridiculous mwahahahaha.

You people have a lot of balls calling Johnnie Winters socially Media savy. He is hardy ever mentioned in any guitar polls & it took forever to finally track him down. In the past two years I have gotten to see a number of his performances on You Tube. The only other poll I have seen him in was the best slide guitarist. It also contained two other names that do not really go out & market themselves, Mick Taylor not in this poll & Ry Cooder also not in this poll. Winters is atmospheres above Stevie Ray & should have beat him in this poll. And I Still can't believe Taylor & Cooder weren't in this. You guys are a bunch of heavy metal kiss asses where promotion outweighs talent every time.

avatar

Hendrix1970

True that dude, Johnny winter hates doing interviews!! Willie dixon once said Johnny was the best white bluesman around, not sure how much that means but whatever.

avatar

Con.e.lee

Johnny Winters kicks ass. That is all. One of the best slide and all around best blues guitar players ever. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 74th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

I saw him play on his 60th Birthday in Clearwater, Florida. He was Smokin' Hott.

This poll completely and totally sucks. All genres thrown together but not represented and this sweet 16 bullshit is totally random. Who decides this crap the readers or some obviously very unmusically aware staff member at GW?

ROTFLUFBLMAOC

avatar

dadrab

This excuse for a popularity contest is inherently flawed and to be wholly ignored.

linkonhayes

I concur.

Con.e.lee

Mos Def agree 402%

How is Dave Mustaine still in here. He's not even the lead guitar player in his own band. What's the big deal about Robert Johnson? He isn't any better than Blind Lemon Jefferson or Blind Willie Johnson. The Blues was actually born in East Texas, it was imported to Mississippi. And how is upstate Mississippi in the Mississippi Delta? The Mississippi Delta is the area around the mouth of the Mississippi River, a long ways from north central Mississippi where the blues guys came from. New Orleans is closer to the Mississippi Delta but you never hear New Orleans music confused with what's called Delta Blues.

avatar

armada1

This has been the peoples vote and obviously we do not subscribe to your kingdom. By the way Dave Mustaine does play a lot of lead guitar in his music.

hwerks2k

AMEN

avatar

guitarladd

I have a son named Stevie and his brother a year younger is Duane. Who will I vote for? Well, I'm from Texas so I'm with Stevie Ray all the way. I'll even vote for him over Jimi, although I'm sure that's who Stevie would vote for.

avatar

Likafool

You guys saying that these types of contests are stupid are right but you also have no ability to have fun. Of course whoever wins isn't going to be the undisputed guitar god of all time but you miss the point. This is just for fun - but if you want to get excited and show us all your anger or tell us how superior your choice is at least post a youtube video so we can all have a laugh.

linkonhayes

Go to You Tube listen to Winters play watch him play. Still playin strong after at least 50 years. Show some respect & if you can laugh at Winters playing after a look & a listen then your just a fool. The contests are fun but even more so when you have people who deserve the right to have a chance to go up against these guys that were selected.

avatar

Con.e.lee

Of course not that would be silly of us guys wouldn't it ? And what about us girls? Why on earth should i expect some credibility from a magazine that runs feature articles on notable guitarists but omits them from the voting process? Back to ... I've been disenfranchised ! I want a new poll ! And perhaps the new fun name of the poll should be 'The undisputed guitar god of all time ' so it includes all of them ???

avatar

iron_maiden

Dave Mustaine was chosen over Marty Friedman!!! WTF! I used to not like Megadeth at all until I heard the stuff that Marty did with them. Marty is by far a better, more versatile and melodic player than Dave!

avatar

Con.e.lee

@eatpills. Word. Guess they're excluding modern day all around iconoclastic composers here and.... Barking arfs backatcha dude {:-{~ !

avatar

Con.e.lee

IMNSHO Zappa shouldn't even be in this poll for he is in a class all by himself. True.
Where's Guthrie Govan?
Where's Mattias IA Eklundh?
Jimi.no.doubt.

The list continues ...lots of holes here GW ! Just sayin.
I feel disenfranchised.

Sincerely,

Not your average mainstream mediocre Rock.R.Chic a/k/a uber studious musicologist keepin it real.
Con.e.lee

Carry on ....

avatar

Con.e.lee

Umm I don't see Richie Kotzen on your poll wassup with that?

avatar

13jeff213

Richie Kotzen has too much control of the guitar.

If you have mastery of the guitar you are not going to be voted greatest guitarist.

avatar

Con.e.lee

Right on ! Should *Master of The Guitar* be considered as a qualification in this all genre throw it in the pot and see what floats to the top list you got going here hmmm? Can we have a new poll please ? This one is severly *lacking substance*. With a Publication name of 'Guitar World ' was expecting that perhaps we would be including ALL the guItarists you at least feature in your articles! Perhaps the coined name of 'sweet 16' should have tipped me off that this poll was contrived by the mind of some bubblegum guru you have working back at the cribb yo ! But hey let's just have fun right? In which case I would also like to also nominate Skwisgaar Skwigelf and Toki Wartooth!

avatar

doubleg23

A sweet sixteen without Eric Clapton? What a joke! This poll is simply shameful and has certainly done more harm than good for the history and legacy of the guitar. A terrific marketing trick for Guitar World.

avatar

redoner

He lost to SRV.

linkonhayes

One word I never see in these polls is overated. Getting a pass just for being famous. Clapton did get through 3 rounds. Guitarists are not Gods if anything back in medievil times they would be nothing more than roaming minstrels or court jesters boning the Queen behind the Kings back.

avatar

dbwindhorst

Oh, for fuck's sake.

So, what do you think is more critical to human existence: hydrogen or gravity?

avatar

Con.e.lee

' I say that there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.'

~ F. Z A P P A

avatar

AxSlinger

Gotta go with Satch. If you haven't seen him in-person, live, then you are missing out on an incredible show of guitar mastery. Never did believe in contests though - especially one where the contestants are of various styles and generations. Is this a beauty contest or what? Doesn't matter to me "who wins," only my opinion matters to me.

avatar

EatPills

What the hell first off saying picking the greatest guitarist is retarded.

I love Dimebag but how is he better then Schuldinger. Thats a ridiculous statement.

And really?!?!?!?! LMFAO, how the hell does Lifeson beat out Zappa? Zappa was probably the greatest ever imo. The guy was such an unbelievable guitarist there is no way the guy from Rush is better then him that is fucking laughable.

Jimmy Page better then Chet Atkins, no.

Seriously who is voting on this? A bunch of pinwheels who dont play music at all? This is laughable.

avatar

armada1

My moms grandma who's uncle from England who knew Dimebags grandpa who knew my nephews sister from his stepmother's side of the family. Coincidentally who is part of the 2 percenters actually use to hang with Chet and Jimmy and said they played equally the same. So it should of be a tie.

The only ones laughing is us pinwheels and we are laughing our asses off at you. Since you are are so superior and we do not no who we should vote for unless of course you tell us who to vote for.

Get over yourself dipstick.

avatar

berzerker198

id like to guess and say dimebag and les paul for the final maybe?

avatar

chktek004

Not sure who to vote tomorrow but If there ever is a Bad Ass Bass player poll I'd have to say Getty Lee should be in the top 10
Dam he's good!

avatar

shadow1029

Geezer Butler and Cliff Burton too

avatar

XGC Polaris

Steve Harris and Billy Sheehan as well in a bass top-ten.

jefffos

Anybody remember Bill Cosby and "Picture Pages"? You were shown a list of like objects with one object that did not fit at all. The song they sang was, "Which of these things is not like the other one? Which of these things does not belong?" Try that game with this list, I'll wait... Did you come up with Dave Mustaine? Me too! Well done folks...
