Guitar World's 11 Essential Thrash Metal Albums

+ Add a Comment

the question should be not how many you have but how many you have still on cassette!

Destruction Infernal Overkill or Eternal Devastion should be on any top thrash album list

No cookie monster vocalist!!! Man when I cant understand them I cant get into the song. That's the reason Old school metal like Maiden Priest Sabbath ect will always have a leg up

Nice list. The only changes I would make would be to switch in Exodus' Fabulous Disaster, and Testament's Low.

Why eleven...? Its just unfair it must be 25 essential albums. Other point: "Kill em' all" its not the precursor of the genhre... the precursor was "Heavy Metal Maniac" from Exciter.
So these are my 25 essential albums (Without especific order):
"Show No Mercy", "Hell Awaits" - Slayer
"Violence and Force" - Exciter
"Rust In Peace", "Countdown To Extintion" - Megadeth
"Extreme Agressions", "Coma Of Souls" - Kreator
"Kill them All", "Ride The Lightning", "Master Of Puppets" - Metallica
"Fistful Of Metal", "Spreading the Disease" - Anthrax
"Bonded By Blood", "Force of Habit" - Exodus
"Morbid Visions", "Beneath the Remains", "Arise" - Sepultura
"The Legacy", "Return to the Apocalyptic City (EP)","Dark Roots Of The Earth" - Testament
"Obsessed by Cruelty", "Persecution Mania" - Sodom
"Alice In Hell", "King of the Kill", "Never Neverland" - Annihilator

What about...: Celtic Frost, Sodom, Dark Angel, Death Angel, Sepultura, Coroner, Onslaught, Mortal Sin, Voivod, Bathory!!!

So I was 10/11 on the albums on your list. The only one not in my possession was "Possessed-Seven Churches". I was really not big into the black metal scene--I did dig some Venom & to some extent bands like Mercyful Fate/King Diamond. I'm glad to see so many of these releases get some of the respect that they truly deserve. Groundbreaking musicianship especially those in the 80's. Personally, I would have chosen "Taking Over" for an Overkill selection--BRUTAL!! Other than that, I really couldn't argue against any other selection that made your list. Man I just never got into vocalist that sound like that. Some of these singers sound like they gargle with gravel. Melodic Metal is awesome

Where is Celtic Frost, Voivod, Sepultura, Machine Head, Voi-lence, SOD, Rigor Mortise, Hellhammer, Anvil or Corrosion of Conformity, among others? Oh those who didn't live through this era probably want album names, well without a couple of specific bands, like Venom or Motörhead no thrash band would exist put perhaps the first pivotal moment would be Anvil's Metal on Metal which influenced every band on GW's list. Also Machine Head's Burn My Eyes, would be the touchstone far all new modern thrash bands, Sepultura put out possibly the greatest 4 thrash albums ever made in a row starting w Beneath the Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D. And Roots. Hellhammer essentially only have one release, and was it ever influential before the turned into possibly the greatest thrash band of the 80's Celtic Frost whose every album (except Cold Lake, stay away from that one), is a progressive milestone in heavy and thrash music. I could go on put I would just say that although it always comes down to a matter of taste some of GW's album picks are definitely not thrash or the bands best albums, but it is their list. I just find it terribly inadequate.

Glad to see OVERKILL made it to the list!!
