Guitar World's Top 10 Music DVDs of 2012
We pick our favorite DVDs of the past year, from documentaries to concerts.
From the moment a mysterious countdown began on Led Zeppelin's official Facebook page, it was pretty clear that whatever the band announced would probably immediately be in the running for biggest news of the year.
As many predicted, the subject of the countdown ended up being the long-awaited release of the band's 2007 reunion concert at London's 02 Arena as both a live album and a spectacularly shot film on DVD and Blu-Ray. Dubbed Celebration Day, the film's release and subsequent press appearances will likely serve as a last hurrah for the legendary band, the film itself a document of Led Zeppelin's triumphant last ride.
"This was going to be a critical show," Jimmy Page said in our January issue. "We only had one shot at it, so we needed to go out there and do it really well."
Zeppelin delivered, and five years later, Celebration Day is unquestionably the best music DVD of 2012.
Elsewhere, the new Rolling Stones documentary, Charlie is my Darling - Ireland 1965, provides a rare look at a still-young Stones, while The Beatles' 1967 made-for-TV film Magical Mystery Tour has finally been remastered in stunning fashion. Metallica broke their record label chains by making Quebec Magnetic the first release on their new label, Blackened Recordings. Joe Satriani brought his virtuoso playing to fans in 3-D, and Iron Maiden rocked Santiago like no other band can.
Below, you'll find our full list of the top 10 DVDs of 2012, all of which would make perfect stocking-stuffers for any music fan in your life. And we'd be remiss to mention DVDs without reminding you that all of our own instructional DVDs are available now at the Guitar World Online Store.
