First off, Borland didn't attack anyone; he was asked his opinion on DT and he gave it.

Pretty refreshing considering this country has been all but neutered by uber-leftist political correctness - say what you want but you better be nice about it bullshit.

For the record: Borland was making a point which seems to escape everyone where HE feels that soul and emotion is more important over how many notes can one cram into a bar of music. That's not to say it's not impressive, but it's just not Borland's cup of tea.

And believe it or not, there are millions of guitarists, both well known and those who we've never heard of, who believe in the same principles. It's not that one way is "right" and the other is "wrong", it's just the "wrong" way of playing the guitar for some.

I find it funny how everyone here is bitching about how Borland is attacking Petrucci in response to what someone asked, when in fact, everyone here seems to have no problem attacking Borland, basically for the same reason.

To be clear: I don't particularly like either band and for various reasons. But I do like and respect both guitarists for what they do and how they go about crafting their music. Neither is the right or wrong way, it just is what it is.

I thought there were far more mature readers here, but evidently, even Guitar World can't escape from trolls and flamethrowers over silly differences in opinion.

I'm just sayin'... \m/ \m/

Honestly, this kind of stuff irritates me a bit. I've never approved of musicians just having insult wars I've always thought it demeans all of us but I think Wes probably got a kick out of getting everyone going. I actually spent a little time with Wes when Black Light Burns came to town and I will say that out of the handfull of celeb musicians I have met he was one of the coolest, anyone who can tolerate me for that long after 8 Yuenglings(I was drinking not him) and a full set has got to be, and whats this BS about Meth; I've never heard that rumor.Oh and BTW for those of you who can only think of Limp Bizkit when you think of Wes Borland, you need to pick up the Cruel Melody album by Black Light Burns and that's all I'm going to say about it.

Lee Ward

Criticism of pro musicians can be helpful if it encourages them to do "their thing." For pros, it's all about them doing "their thing" (and fans liking them for it) - no one will be better at doing "their thing" than them.

But if Borland and Petrucci had to switch places, I'm guessing that Petrucci would "own" Borland's material better than Borland could ever play Petrucci's (if ever...I'm guessing that would be a train wreck).

Perhaps Borland doesn't realize that speed and technique players play that way because they can, they want to, and their fans want them to, not necessarily because it's all they can play or can play well.

Very true and well said now if only people here could give Yngwie that same kind of respect for doing what he does after all he did inspire Petrucci

You can't really expect an intelligent comment from some one who plays a seven-string, tuned up, and never uses more then two strings per song.

Can't say i envy his ability to convey feeling and soul into his music either.

That said, i am jealous of his bank account.
'cuz that be like ttly PHAT. LimP BiZkit stYle!!

"Guitar World should put those 2 against each other in the poll they got going on...

After my big rant, I checked out Borland's Twitter site. He's actually a funny guy.

Sometimes it just seems like musicians bag out Dream Theater as a crutch or to try and be hip. It's actually getting boring, especially coming from Limp Bizkit.

Yeah, everyone's entitled to their own opinion but some opinions are just stupid. Limp Bizkit can always say that they sold millions of albums at one time (and obviously they have written some catchy songs that have meant something to a great number of people, whether I like it or not) but then so did other bands and singers who we'll never hear from again (and many who they themselves got ripped off) who had huge corporate backing and advertising that pushed all sorts of crap that was designated as hip at one time.

Dream Theater may not have sold as much as the Back Street Boys but at least they have sold millions of albums worldwide without compromising.

Dream Theater started a real movement, especially after “Awake” (both good and bad, considering all the Dream Theater clones these days but hey, whatever floats your boat and at least they’re actually inspiring people to become better musicians). How many other bands can say they've done that?

I like three chord and "so called basic music" just as much as everyone else (and there is an obvious art to Pop Music which is just as relevant as Art Music) but jeeze, it's not the be all and end all of music. Life would be pretty boring if all we heard was what the media says we should listen to.

Dream Theater seems like the Franz List of Rock music where their technique overshadows their music and people with dumb comments are just too lazy to really listen. For me these days, it's their composing that really matters, even with all their technique they do actually leave space in their music to breathe (John Patrucci does actually play whole note power chords when the music needs space, duh!). I mean, "Innocents Faded" is a masterpiece. And on the new album, ballads like, "Far from Heaven" and "Beneath the Surface". And when they need to take it to another level, "Breaking All Illusions".

Oh yeah, J.S. Bach was a mathematician as well and look what his music inspired.

i love dream theater as the handle shows. all i have to say is they are supreme musicians and when limp bizkit has an album nominated for anything again he can talk. until then he may want to keep quiet.

it's obvious Wes ran out of crystal meth and couldn't get a hold of his dealer. so he needed to vent just like the guys in Korn who also Suck. putting down Dream Theater just because your going through withdrawls is just a joke. now he just sounds like a rapper who is jealous of other rappers. REAL musicians don't talk trash about each other. they leave that to the hater fans who have nothing else to do with their lonely lives. good one Wes now we know for sure your an a-hole!

Beyond hilarious, the insight of Wes Borland. This is simple, what do you all think people like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett, Joe Bonamassa, and all the rest would say when reading the ridiculous comments made by this great guitar virtuoso? hahahahahahahahahahaha...

avatar

Teleflex

WTF? Borland talk about DT that way is like someone in the minor leagues talking about a pro league team...DT's longevity speaks for itself whether you like their music or not. Never understood why you would want a limp biscuit anyways.

avatar

loral

If you knew where the term "limp biscuit" comes from, I would NEVER, EVER want to be in a band by that name.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=limp%20biscuit

And when one musician attacks another, that crosses the line.

You're entitled to an opinion such as "my band and DT are different styles" but never put down a fellow musician/band and question their fans taste.

avatar

hornstar

didn't Wes say he paints his face and wears strange costumes because he's embarased to be a member of LB?

avatar

Sure looks like it . . .

WHO THE FUCK IS WES BORLAND?

The fucking parrot should get back in his box, where he fucking belongs.

A man who has achieved a bit of success with a shitty band and 1 song on radio... Pipes up 10 years after that and attacks another musician/band... Hmmm...bit upset with your Life WES?

avatar

loral

Drinking and posting on Facebook/Twitter do NOT mix..... LOL

BTW, if you find out who he is, I'm still not interested.

Is this guy a body painter or something? I guess when I heard about them having a giant toilet on their stage I moved on. Maybe someday a band I can be proud of will come from my hometown (no offense to my southern rocker friends, just a difference of tastes).

Is this the same guy they were trying to replace when they did that guitarist "audition" scam a while back? Or was he the guy who was looking for people's ideas to steal? I suspected something was fishy about the whole deal, so I didn't go. Later I read about the release people had to sign and my suspicions were confirmed. You could only play something completely original, they'd record it and retain all rights to it. Then they'd give you the "don't call us" routine.

It was really low because they had all these people waiting for hours in line, expecting to get a legit audition, only to find out it was a lame fishing for new material scam. If they'd simply been up front about it and say "here's a chance to help write new material for LB", and make it like the fans were participating, it would have made them look a LOT better . . .

Really? Very interesting post...

Conclusion... WES BORLAND = 15min Has Been

Here's the actual event: http://www.nyrock.com/worldbeat/12_2001/122301.asp

And here's an eyewitness account:
http://www.blistering.com/news/newsdet.php3?ID=2583

Actually, they staged their "auditions" after Borland left. Unbeknownst to their fans who waited in line for hours on end:

"Former FEAR FACTORY axeman Dino Cazares was contacted by a representative of LIMP BIZKIT's management company The Firm about auditioning for the vacant guitarist slot in the latter group, but has reportedly turned down the offer, calling the prospect of joining LIMP BIZKIT “career suicide”."

So they never planned to accept anyone to begin with. But then a few months later:

"Limp Bizkit singer Fred Durst wants departed guitarist Wes Borland back in the band. "We are hoping Wes will come back and suprise [sic] us one day soon," Durst posts on Limp Bizkit's official site. "We really miss him."

It's nice when you what you want . . .

Hahahahaha! OK>everyone has their own opinions, and a right to like and or dislike certain music. Borland can obviously have his own opinion. No doubt about that. Also, music is not a competition, it's an art form. But when you say something like Dream Theater..."cannot write songs. Not a band." You don't get a pass on that one. Many albums and tours later and hundreds of thousands of fans that support DT proves that a statement like that is sure to paint you as an idiot or a hater, or in this case, both. I would ask: if the guys in DT are such crappy musicians how have they maintained a career for this long, and spawned as many side projects and as much musical output as they have? If nobody buys your music, you can't really sustain a musical career can you? I think Wes is suffering from a case of professional jealousy. I personally can't stand LB, but that's my opinion and nobody really cares what I, or anyone else likes.

And to some of the other comments on here: I am tired of the age old idea that playing fast is devoid of feeling. What a crock. No one accuses Paganini, DiMeola or EVH of not having feeling in their playing/music. Just because it doesn't speak to you, doesn't mean there is no feeling. Most people can't separate their own inadequacies and jealousies from their opinions. I can't play as fast as Vai, Gilbert or Petrucci, but I admire them for their technical accomplishments. I don't hate them because I can't do what they can do.

Aw, is Wes frustrated trying to learn his scales again?

avatar

sethboyer22

whether it's wes borland saying it or someone else dream theater sucks.

avatar

epolite148

you must have made a mistake and clicked on the wrong site. i think you were looking for Lady Gaga.com even if you don't like Dream Theater they definitely don't suck. that's like saying Rush, Yes, and every other prog. band out there sucks! i got news for you progressive rock is growing bigger every day. because people are getting tired of listening to the same old crap. now go back and practice your scales before people start saying you suck.

avatar

sethboyer22

after reading your valid arguments and listening to more dream theater i think i've had a change of heart.... now i really think they suck.prog is the worst. yes is cool.

avatar

Tashkas

i think wes just said his opinion as a fan of music not a musician. its not that he claims that he writes better stuff than DT. anyways... horrible bands... both of them :D

avatar

raf071596

Loudmouths who start shit like this get noticed for a bit but usually fade quickly. When was the last LB album? I can't even remember. Dream Theater is on the road right now i believe supporting a new disc. Here's the thing: Wes has the right to his opinion. We also have the right to ours. If u wanna say ur better, prove it by ur music, not by running ur mouth. Release a must have LB album that blows away anything Dream Theater or any other band makes. Then u will have some bragging rights. Then continue to do so and do it consistently. Not a fan of LB, but i respect what they do. I am a fan of lots of other bands including DT and i respect them as well. Just one word of advice, if ur gonna start a shit storm Wes, u better be ready to smell like an outhouse because it can come back and bite you in the ass. Ask Carlos Cavazo about what happened to Quiet Riot because of Kevin Dubrow back in the day.

spinethief

and please factor in Black Light Burns....oh wait I forgot what they sound like. And I even played a gig with them in KC at Static wednesday13's merch girl was the bizniz that's all I remember.

avatar

arktik464

I'm not a huge fan of either band (especially Limp Bizkit). But I'm gonna go ahead and side with Wes. I also feel that soulful playing is more important than technique. However, over distorted, chug riffs aren't exactly that (sorry Wes).

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Oh man. This is rich.
