Review: Prestige Guitars Musician Standard

Posted 12/20/2012 at 11:34am | by Eric Kirkland, Video by Paul Riario

Gibson pioneered the arched-top semihollow electric guitar in 1958 with the introduction of the ES-335. A thinline-bodied guitar, the 335 featured a solid block down its center, and hollow sidewings. The ES family of guitars became a favorite of electric blues players, like B.B. King, as well as rock and rollers, such as Chuck Berry, and the design has remained a favorite of blues, rock and pop players to this day. Prestige’s affordable Musician Standard brings this classic design forward, blending old-world construction and a vintage Bigsby tremolo with noise-silencing contemporary appointments and a set of Seymour Duncan high-output pickups.

Vai & Abasi: Follow the Leader

Tosin Abasi strides into a Hollywood photo studio dressed in a crisp striped jersey, jeans and a pair of horn-rimmed glasses that make him look a bit like the young Dizzy Gillespie. He’s toting a pair of the Ibanez eight-string guitars that have become his stock in trade, sleek-bodied instruments with broad, massive necks that carry the heft and menace of weaponry.

Chet Atkins made countless recordings as a studio musician, producer and solo artist. Many of his recordings — particularly those of the artists he produced in Nashville, like Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and the Everly Brothers — laid the foundation for early rock and roll.

Metal for Life: Incorporating Different Picking Techniques for Specific Metal Riffs

This month, I'd like to address an essential point of focus for every good metal player: how to best strengthen the pick-hand technique. The examples I'm going to show you cover a wide variety of pick-hand techniques, from using all downstrokes the alternate picking to economy picking and more, offering a systematic approach to building up these different techniques that will allow you to play with more expression, control and power.

Interview: Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong on '¡Uno!,' '¡Dos!' and '¡Tre!'

Green Day: Trio Grande

The band, its label and its management also came up with the idea to release the three discs in succession rather than put them out all at once or as a set. ¡Uno! comes out September 25, ¡Dos! hits on November 13, and ¡Tré! will be released on January 15, 2013. It’s an unconventional move, but one that’s perhaps more attuned to the short-attention-span digital era.

Prog-Gnosis: An Introduction to Double Picking

Prog-Gnosis: Double Picking

This month, I'd like to talk about a cool, useful technique I sometimes use called “double picking,” which involves repeating each note in a melody twice using alternate (down-up) picking. A good example of this technique can be found in the first solo I play in “An Infinite Regression,” from Animals as Leaders’ latest release, Weightless.

Talkin' Blues: Utilizing Unresolved Harmonic Tension to Create Dark, Eerie Music

Last month we looked at some examples of blues phrasing with chromatic passing tones leading to strong chord-tone resolutions, but such neat-and-tidy phrases are only one side of the chromatic picture. On the other side is unresolved tension, i.e. deliberately delaying or avoiding consonant resolutions to create dissonance that evokes feelings of darkness and danger. This sound entered the realm of American pop music in the Fifties through sexy, smoky epics like the Viscounts’ “Harlem Nocturne” and the themes for TV detective series like Peter Gunn and Perry Mason, which paralleled edgy, urban noir (“black”) trends in fiction and film.

Hole Notes: Randy Rhoads' Acoustic Techniques and Riffs

A fan of classical music, Randy Rhoads was one of the first American guitarists to successfully incorporate classical music elements into heavy metal. (“Euro-metal” guitarists, including Ritchie Blackmore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Uli Jon Roth and Michael Schenker, had also experimented with melding the two genres.) Reportedly, Rhoads was contemplating retiring from rock after the tour to study classical guitar at UCLA. In this lesson, we’ll take a look at examples in the style of Rhoads’ classically influenced solo piece “Dee” as well as “Diary of a Madman” and “Goodbye to Romance,” two other Ozzy favorites that prominently feature acoustic guitar.
