Excellent tips, I've been doing this for years. Just want to add one thing. It's also a good time for ear training. Play over every musical interlude during the show. Figure out what key they're in, figure out what scales they're using. Try to pick out a lick, run, progression, anything to join the fun.
Figure out the key during the commercials too. You'll be surprised how your ear can improve. The next time you're at the jam, you'll pick up what the other folks are doing a little faster.
