Joywave Unveils Thermochromic Fender Guitar

When Joey Morinelli of Rochester, NY band Joywave decided to get a custom-built Fender, he wanted his instrument to stand out from the pack. Rather than requesting an unusual shape though, he asked for his custom Fender Telecaster to be fitted with a liquid crystal thermochromic finish.

The end result is a black Telecaster that—though it looks unassuming at first—changes color based on both temperature and body heat.

Even when Morinelli is simply standing around with the guitar—as you can see in the second video below—the guitar's appearance can change dramatically.

Review: The Fusion Guitar

Ever since smartphones started to gain prominence about 10 years ago, a wide variety of guitar-oriented apps have emerged that offer players incredibly powerful performance, recording, practice and educational capabilities for a relatively modest investment.

But perhaps the biggest appeal of guitar apps is the portability of a smartphone-based setup.

Expand Your Melodic Colors with Ninth Arpeggios

When learning how to play jazz guitar, many of us know it's important to use arpeggios to outline chords in our licks, phrases, melody lines and solos.

While we know learning arpeggios is important, we often can become bored with our playing if we stick to only using root-position, R-3-5-7 arpeggios to build our licks and melodies. A great way to keep that solid, chord outline in your lines that arpeggios provide, while adding a bit of harmonic color to your ideas, is to learn five-note, ninth arpeggios.

The Five Weirdest Guitars of the Eighties

In their new video, Guitar Nerds—a U.K.-based website for guitar fans (and nerds, we reckon)—has taken a look at the five weirdest guitars from the decade with seemingly infinite staying power, the Eighties.

From Prince's custom Cloud, to a...we'll call it eye-catching, Charvel, there are some fairly wild instruments here, representing some of the wildest excesses of the decade. You can see them all in the video below.
