Islam considers Jesus to be a prophet, not a messiah and certainly not a God. I know that originally because I asked these questions from a fellow soldier in Army basic training back in '82 and I'd previously taken some theology classes at my first college, a Jesuit school (that's a Catholic school for those that aren't aware). So, I'd had an interest in religion and the world was not at total war quite at that moment. They had no desire to disrespect Jesus or use him as a reason to promote hatred at that time, to the best of my knowledge. So, no, if they think it's dissing Jesus, I would assume it would be the same as us having a negative opinion about Moses or Soloman. We forget those were prophets of our own Christianity at times, but a short 30 years ago and that would have created a shit storm among many Christian extremists. Therein lies the problem, extremists. Not only in religion, but in everyday events around the world, a lack of common sense and acceptance of other beliefs. We don't have to buy into them, but we sure as hell should have the capacity to allow others to believe what they do. Until the world has the ability to be governed by non secular representation, something our country is struggling with at the moment, we'll continue to have this bullshit going on, it's not at all different here with politicians trying to shove religion down our throats rather than accept the most basic of scientific knowledge, until then our nation is only slightly a step above those that force their religious beliefs upon their populace. Sorry michaelmichigan, but you opened this can of worms, though I've said my piece and will let it go. It's too bad this even has to be an issue in 2013.

Well, I didn't mean to open a can or worms, but I am glad I did. I am on old metalhead, who is in the science business and also volunteers at a church. I see lots of perspectives out there, and spend a lot of time trying to understand where people come from, and try to not just have knee jerk reactions to what some, even extremists, believe. Many of my friends and acquaintances believe that because of the music I listen to, the concerts I attend, and the t shirts I wear now and then, that I am an extremist. I see metal and metal musicians not as Satanic(although often the lyrics are written for shock value), but as a way to allow young people (especially boys), to be able to take out their anger at an unfair and unjust society in a non violent way. The fact that some people(and these are usually small groups with big mouths), attach all kinds of labels and declare them dangerous, is a joke to me. Your big-picture points about society and the bad uses of religion are valid and I respect them. But my take on this is just a bit narrower. Thanks for reading.

I appreciate you sharing your reply. Especially since I agree with it. I lived in Tulsa for a bit in the early 80's and man, did I ever catch hell for wearing my Blue Oyster Cult and Black Sabbath t's and jersey's. It gave me immense satisfaction to quote them lyrics from each band thus proving their ignorance on the subject. Good old Oral Roberts University, never a dull moment with those students at the mall. To think how mild the music was then, it boggles the mind. The kronos was the upside down staff of God, it still makes me laugh 30+ years later.

I not familiar with this band, so, I suppose the pertinent question to ask is are they satanists or not? Some people assume so by looking at the lyrics - but just being arseholes to those who practice do practice a religion and/or trying to drive people away from the faith of choice is not enough to be labelled a Satanist. To do that you need to be a member of the Church of Satan and judging by what people are saying about the lyrics I don't think they would want to be associated with any religion up to and including Satanism.

2 thoughts.

It says something about your growth and importance when a criticism of your music makes international news. All press is good press.

And....really? the Department of Islamic Development? If they really think the music is dissing Jesus, wouldn't that make them happy?

Gawd, haven't we all gotten past this BS yet? They are just a band, people, in the business of entertainment.
