Im voting for Stryper. Just so i can make a mockery of them when they win! Ohhh, the jokes i have !

avatar

Firestorm777

Not really seeing your logic there, bud. But by all means, carry on voting for Stryper. I don't really give a care whether you mock them afterward or not, and I don't think anyone else does either.

avatar

Firestorm777

What's hilarious is that you're even back on this site after claiming you had so many other "better" guitar sites to frequent. Don't demean yourself, my dear 57trouble. Leave the second-rate GW to moulder in its grave of you-lessness.

avatar

57trouble

Sorry Firestorm777. I should have know better. This is a Stryper fan only Zone. You can tell from the votes hahaha

I will admit i was stupid for taking it that seriously...evedently you haven't figured that out yet. You people must not work hahaa

I love how this has played out. I always like pestering Christians. Its like shooting fish in a barrel.

avatar

Aguppywear777

too bad you're shooting blanks...

avatar

Firestorm777

Look, I'm sorry that your beloved Scorpions have fallen so far behind in the polls. I'll admit, I do actually like a few of their songs. "Rock You Like A Hurricane" is pretty boss.

But in the end, it's just a stupid poll. Like you're so fond of saying, it doesn't mean anything. So you can rest easy. No one is denying that the Scorps rock. They're just not my favorite, and they're not (apparently) the majority of the voters' favorite. That position is rapidly going to Frank Zappa. :D

avatar

57trouble

Boss ? I think that word went out in 1987. Im glad Zappa is winning.

avatar

Firestorm777

"Boss" went out in 1987? Well, I guess you would know. I wasn't alive back then. :D

avatar

swordstres

Go ahead and let Stryper win...They deserve it. The fans know they have already won but no one will confirm it...

avatar

Aguppywear777

Ditto!

avatar

StryperFan777

I am one of those Stryper fans voting for Yellow and Black attack. If the originator of the poll cannot accept a result that did not go in his favor, he should not have created the poll in the first place. Don't explain away the result as a hack or something silly. The mature thing to do is to end the poll when it should have. Not wait for the results to change and then end the result. Really???

avatar

Aguppywear777

You got that right!!! Stryper Army - we came, we voted, we won, now and 4ever!

avatar

Aguppywear777

All I want to know is how long is Tony Grassi's week?

avatar

57trouble

As long as it takes for Zappa to win ! Bwahahaha !

avatar

Shagg

Lol@ someone actually trying to convince others that they themselves contacted the polling company and that the polling company confirmed their deepest fears that those same polls their favorite band are trailing in indeed have been hacked. There can be no other explanation. :D

avatar

Aguppywear777

Let's take a poll who really believes that?

avatar

Wildhorse

Lol ; if you look the poll "best guitar album of 1985" , Stryper : 70 !! ahahaha !! ridiculous poll !

avatar

57trouble

I contacted poll daddy. These polls are hacked by some douchebag. DO NOT VOTE !

avatar

StryperTransAm

I contacted polldaddy and they informed me that 57trouble has been hacking the polls and is a closet Stryper fan.

It's okay, you're amongst friends here. We welcome you to the fold. :)

avatar

Aguppywear777

That's right do not vote on this bogus poll any longer - the Stryper Army has infiltrated this poll and has conquered it loud n' clear!

avatar

Firestorm777

Uh, it would seem that Frank Zappa is rapidly taking the lead...

avatar

stryperlaw

whatever grow up man!

avatar

stryperlaw

Stryper can Jam with the best of them, YABA might not be thier best work, it is still good. Sorry you people cant see the forrest for the trees. Iron Maiden, love thier music, they jam also, but Im a Stryper fan first. So they get my vote!

Being an avid guitarist myself, I have to say that all artists in the year by year polls are incredible. I have admired and have often tried to imitate, usually quite unsuccessfully, the playing styles of many of the mentioned individual guitarists. Often playing somewhat in the style of Alex Lifeson and having a brother that plays drums - Rush and Grace Under Pressure seemingly would be my natural choice. But, like many here have voted, the dual guitar harmonies and melodic song structures written by Stryper on there sophomore album, as I recall, offered something really exciting. This was very much expanded on in later efforts. Seeing the bands energy and passion live was also quite a thrill. As guitarists, they are well rehearsed. I admire the discipline required in order to play and sing in tandem with another guitarist. Ego doesn't overshadow musicianship. So rather than voting for Rush, which has had their share of recognition, I'll vote for Stryper. Too many people, over the years, have shot them down for their beliefs. Have to give them due credit for conviction. That aside, they have long been overdue for some widespread recognition of their guitar playing. Check them out, playing live and acoustic. On top of that, you should hear them plugged in! Listen to this on Stryper's latest called "The Covering". It's definitely a guitarists album. Not virtuoso work like Jesse Cook, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Bonnamossa... but something plain and simply good.

SERIOUSLY. I heard about this .... 'cover album', and thought, 'what'??? Well when I heard it, I was so shocked... I mean, it is 'THAT' good! I am no 'pro' citic, but every review I read seemed the same? 'Cover albums', bands should steer clear of that neighborhood.... but 'this' is the exception.... It is truly remarkable, and IT'S 1 of those things where you gotta hear it. Every single buddy I have who plays, once they finally checked it out, now owns a copy. Yeah, Seriusly.

I've been a Stryper fan for most of 3 decades, dating back to when C C Deville left the band "not liking the message and direction the band was headed in"... known as Roxx Regime back then, the Sweet brothers knew they had found a Phenom in Oz Fox. This poll is not for 'best guitarist' or 'best guitar tandem' album, it is for "The Best Guitar Album of 1984". I saw these guys back in the 80's, and I saw them in March of 2011, they 'killed it' in 84 as they did a few months ago! The Yellow and Black attack, from start to finish, never stops ripping your' head off with more energy than anything I've ever heard before it's time. Yes, Powerslave is a great album, George Lynch was Dokken, & Malmsteen (If you believe speed & agility is 'what' it's all about) is probably in the discussion 'who's better, Yngwie or Eddie'? However, The Y & B Attack, has elements of all of those who influenced Stryper musically, and they put their own distinct signature on it. Their own sound, unlike anything ever done b4 or since. With the release of 'The Covering', though they had nothing to prove, they pulled off the 'BEST' cover album of all time. Track 13, the only 'original' tune on it, is perhaps the best song on it! Heaven and Hell, a tribute to RJD is my fav., but the point is, this band is talented, may have the best guitar tandem ever, and I live in Pittsburgh PA, very few people you meet on the street do not know who Stryper is? Van Halen, is getting nearly 20% of the vote, on an album that was weak in terms of Eddies' standards, so I do not see what all the fuss is about? Stryper fans are loyal, they are popular all over europe, Japan, and they will be hard to beat, it's the album that started it all! Like Van Halen, they made a statement from the very first note! By the way, Enigma Records was NOT a 'christian' label.

avatar

57trouble

Stryper is not distinct in any way. They are a third rate glam band that made it with a gimick. Bibles and that silly yellow and black wear. I bet they stole that from Matthias Jabs of the Scorps anyway. He wore that silly yellow and black spandex in 83-84. I never thought it was cool but that man is a PLAYER !

Enough of this , were just playing into GW hands. Go vote in polls at classic rock forums.

avatar

rex caroll fan

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and The Scorps are amazing! The idea for the 'silly' spandex is based on a Bible verse, Isaiah 53:5 "By His stripes, we are healed", and Strypers' version of 'Blackout' on their new CD 'The Covering', absolutely ROCKS every bit as much as the original. By the way, that is not my opinion, that came from a VH1 interview with Rob Halford. 'Heaven & Hell' a tribute to the late great Ronnie James Dio is by far the best song on the album (In alot of peoples' opinions), and Stryper is recording a new CD of originals, that is rumored to be their 'heaviest sound' ever. "Soldiers under command"will win 'Best Guitar album of 1985', because it IS the best guitar album of 1985, and probably Strypers' 'BEST' ever album. Listen to 'The Covering', I think you'd be amazed at what a '3rd rate glam band' is capable of!

avatar

57trouble

Hmmm, it will win ? Well, probably because if YBT wins this, no one will ever come back to vote on this site. Fact is, this poll has been advertised AROUND THE WORLD because of me and a few nutty scorps fans. Not to mention van halen , iron maiden, Metallica fans. Stryper is GAY ! End of story. They are a christian glam band that only had one thing to offer : a gimick.

There are two answers to the conundrum of this poll. Either stryper douche is cheating or guitar world is playing us to get people to visit this site. Either way : THIS POLL IS NOT VALID !

avatar

Firestorm777

May I suggest a third answer to the so-called conundrum? Could it be that Stryper's fans are simply more dedicated than the Scorpions' fans? What a shocker.

Oh, and Stryper would have done better WITHOUT their so-called "gimmick." If they were only in it for the money and fame, I'm not sure why they would have decided Christianity would make them more appealing and successful. Seems to me it's lost them more fans than it has gained them.

Your constant whining is making me ill. If this poll is so insignificant and invalid, why do you keep wasting your time with these incoherent (and ignorant-sounding) rants? Do you truly have NOTHING better to do?

avatar

57trouble

HaHa, more dedicated my ass ! And me with nothing to do ? If you stryper fans are legit, you obviously have nothing else better to do yourselves then vote here. like i said before STRYPER IS GAY !

Oh, and another odd event. When the first 1982 poll went down and the Scorps stormed it...i posted on my facebook that Scorps fans need to vote in the 1984 poll. Well i had this popular christian pastor on my facebook ( hes my age) that i was kinda talking with about god n such. I have my suspicions about him and this poll...if im wrong, sorry to him in advance. Truth is, i don't trust most hardcore bible thumpers. I have been stabbed in the back many a time by some of these D-bags. Moderates ? Fine but hardcores are freaks and they never play by the rules. They use their beliefs as something to hide behind. Hypocrites. Oh, and by the way, i dabbled with the idea of becoming a christian...i decided that reason is my god !

And these are not stryper fans. Its one douchebag. Oh well, guitar worlds bad for even putting them on the polls. GW is not even sold in any of my local grocery stores anyway...have to go to a guitar store to get it.

So many other great guitar sites to go to that never even mention stryper. Thank god...i mean satan.

avatar

swordstres

Well you know what those Stryper boys say..To Hell with The Devil!!!

avatar

Firestorm777

Well then, I suggest you go to these other "great guitar sites" and refrain from spewing your venom on GW any longer. I shan't try to stop you. Although, if you'd spend more time voting and less time posting ignorant drivel, your precious Scorpions might be winning about now. Too bad!

Vai's "Flex-able" gets my vote, he was fresh out of Zappa school but it's so much more than the sum of its parts. Win or not at least it's listed - Mr. Editor there are some really great guitar records missing from this poll. Can you please append?

Minutemen "Double Nickels On The Dime": has INCREDIBLE guitar playing (not to mention ridiculously good bass/drums). If you look it up you will see this is a very highly regarded album.

U2 "Unforgettable fire": where the heck is it? "Pride in the name of love" only has some of the most original and memorable guitar in the entire history of the instrument!

Prince's "Purple Rain": should be on the list for the ear-splitting solo @ the end of "Let's go crazy" alone and there's more. The dude can play.

Sonic Youth "Bad Moon Rising": talk about original guitar work.

Black Flag "My War" / "Slip It In" / "Live '84": Greg Ginn, dude. These guys invented grunge with "My War" (personally I like the playing on "Slip it in" better but let people vote)

Violent Femmes "Hallowed Ground": maybe not as over the top as the 1st record it's still great

Meat Puppets "II": amazing amazing album

H.S.A.S. "Through the Fire": how can we include Sammy Hagar "VOA" yet not mention Sammy's other record that year (a MUCH better guitar album)

And if "VOA" sets a bar for the guitar playing that qualifies for this poll, we might as well list
Huey Lewis "Sports"
Bangles "All over the place"
The Cars "Heartbeat city"
Replacements "Let it be"
Butthole Surfers "Psychic, Powerless... Another man's sac"

In any case, it is inconceivable that Stryper or Scorps, as fine artists and musicians as they may be, should be winning a national poll of the best guitar album, in a year that saw major releases by such widely recognized guitar giants as Van Halen, Metallica & Yngwie. I mean, Stryper over "Hot for teacher"? Are you kiddin' me?

avatar

57trouble

Dear Satan, please remove Stryper from the top of this poll. 1984 was the year of METAL. You, Satan, are the one who brought us this glorious, EVIL, powerful, kick ass music to corrupt all of us.And we thank you. This year, 1984, was the one of the highpoints of your successes through eternity. Please dont let me or any of us down...or i may become a christian !

In Satan's name, HELL YEAH !

avatar

57trouble

Screw Guitar world. You want real debates and polls ? Go to Classic rock Forums , or Harmony Central forums. Guitar World was always a second hand rag to Guitar Player back in the day anyway. If they want to make good with me do a full mag with Uli John Roth , Michael Schenker , Matthias Jabs. All the great German Guitarists.

avatar

57trouble

This is either rigged, you have the 2 stryper fans with some kind of cheating program, or there are a lot of closet stryper fans. Either way the poll will not be legit if they win. Im a Scorps fan but Stryper over Van Halen ? Really ?

avatar

57trouble

I will have to agree wildhorse. Noticed the same thing. And when i saw that stryper was at the top i went to check their forums and fansites...nada. Not until us Scorps fans were making a bunch of noise about it then one guy posted " is everyone still voting ". The same polling program has been hacked into before as well so...

I think its clear that no one will take strypers #1 spot seriously. I mean how many people in the " real world " gives a rats ass anyway. Rock is dead on the vine and ready to drop anyway. Sad but true. This also may be a ploy by GW to get more people here. They dont really sell alot of mags anymore...the last i bought was in 98 i think.

I could say a bunch of well placed words about Love at first sting but...the music speaks for itself. Not a weak guitar moment on that album. Listen for yourself. Hurricane, Big City Nights, still loving you, Bad Boys running wild, comming home....

avatar

Firestorm777

You're not finding much about it on Stryper's forums because... *drumroll and fanfare, please* ...the facebook Stryper Army is almost solely responsible for all the votes. Check it out if you don't believe me.

avatar

Wildhorse

i also think there is a problem; I made test with scorpions vote ( day or night) and automatically the percentage of styper increases of the double approximatically ; sounding not valid .

avatar

RockNRoller9

Oh, I don't know 57trouble, those Stryper boys can play. Oz Fox and Michael Sweet are extremely talented guitarists who can hold their own with anyone. I checked out their Covering covers disc, and their take on Van Halen, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath etc tunes are darn good, and the new song God, it rocks hard. No, these guys are worthy. One may not dig their message (I do, as I believe in an Almighty creator and a Savior who died for all), but most objective listeners acknowledge they can flat out play their instruments and sing. If Stryper fans (closet or unashamed) vote them to victory, more power to 'em.

avatar

swordstres

You'd be suprised how many fans Stryper has...unlike many bands alot of their fans have stuck by them through the years probally not only due to the music but also due to their character...pay attention to all the touring they are doing... somebody is buying tickets...they are still making money and making new fans everyday. STRYPER ROCKS FOREVER!

avatar

57trouble

Uhhh, this is not about bands or songs its about what is the best GUITAR ALBUM. I bet if you asked 50 people on the street what the best guitar album of 1984 is not ONE would say Stryper.Hell, how many people even remember them ? The problem here is , one christian band was put on the poll so Christians are going to vote for it...or sit there all day voting. The van halen forums have about 1000 viewers/users a day and they usually FLOOD these polls. So its either rigged our you are a douchebag that is cheating. What would Jesus think about that ?

And stryper looked pretty gay...you sure they were christians ? I have friends in the industry that said they partied like everyone else on the strip ( gazaries ect ) back in the day. Some said there " christian bent " was a gimick. So keep voting. It dosent make stryper any better..it just means you have nothing better to do.

SCORPIONS VAN HALEN METALLICA IRON MAIDEN DOKKEN ! REAL GUITAR BANDS !

avatar

aliensailor

I remember them well. Admittedly, I'm not a churchgoer. Pipe organs and harps really don't move me! Better say this before lightning strikes me down - Stryper really is a great guitar band :-)

avatar

Wildhorse

I m agree ; I know dokken Dio Scorpions Van halen Queeensryche D guilmour Kiss Bon jovi F zappa Ingwee m Quiet riot Saxon Judas priest Anthrax the cult S vai Rush Manowar S haggar Wasp Europe Toto Queen Ratt T nuggent D purple Iron maiden Metallica Whitesnate Great white Krokus red hot BUT STRYPER : SORRY I NEVER HEAR THIS NAME , I DON T KNOW THIS BAND !!! Poll no valid !!!

avatar

wrathius

The obvious choice is Yngwie Malmsteen's "Rising Force" -- and indeed, Yngwie is mentioned in the write-up for the poll. But "Rising Force" is not listed as an option on which to vote. Most unfortunate!

avatar

Josh Hart

Sorry for the oversight, wrathius, it's on there now! Vote away!
