Poll: What Was the Best Guitar Album of 1989?
Related Content
The year 1989 was marked by incidences of tragedy and controversy: the Exxon-Valdez disaster, the protests at Tiananmen Square, Jethro Tull beating Metallica for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance at the 31st Grammy Awards ...
And then there were the albums. As the decade came to a close, tastes were making a marked shift. New Wave had all but dried up, and punk, save a few rare exceptions, had returned underground. Metal was still the formidable force on the airwaves and the charts, but if you take a look at the list of LPs in the poll below, you'll notice a few outsiders sneaking in.
Seattle Sub Pop noisemakers Soundgarden and Nirvana, and compatriots Mother Love Bone, were beginning to rub shoulder to shoulder with Los Angeles' glam-rock darlings. With the Sunset Strip's saturated cache of Guns N' Crue copycats, the recording industry was poised for something revolutionary.
But before that fateful time, there were still some great rock records to be heard -- or had we by now all switched to CDs? No, I'm sorry; cassette tapes.

Steve Morse is a huge omission. Criminal even.
KISS really? The KISS fanboys are going to win this through sheer number which is not going to exhibit the best guitar performance of that year. Gene got to be one of the savviest marketers this world has seen.

Oops! Your poll is invalid since it doesn't include Steve Morse's High Tension Wires, which was released in 1989.

This poll also should have included The Offspring's self-titled debut, which was released in 1989. To me, it's one of the best guitar albums of that year. Oh well, maybe Ignition will be included when they do 1992. But when they do 1994, Smash should definitely be included, because it's The Offspring's most successful release and many consider it to be the best-selling independent album of all time. I just love The Offspring a lot and would love to see them get some more recognition they deserved.

Yeah, but they have some best guitar albums. If Smash was listed for 1994, I'd definitely vote for that album or if Americana was listed for 1998, I'd vote for that album too. I know either or both of those albums helped shape The Offspring's career, as did Ixnay on the Hombre.
