It's a horses for courses thing too when it comes to tone. I am a Strat man through and through, yet for some things I love playing Les Paul's! chalk and cheese, yet equally great in their own right! When I first watched the "Experience Hendrix" dvd, I thought Kenny Wayne had a tone almost identical to SRV, which of course is an awesome tone! I think something that lacks a bit in modern players is a "character tone". If you look at the classic's, eg Jimi Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Peter Frampton, David Gilmour, Brian May, their guitar sounds are instantly recognizable, you don't get that so much anymore. My current setup is a '78 Strat through a vintage Marshall JMP Superlead and Leslie (model 142),sounds huge and I'm lovin' it! :)
