Sammy's right. I was very disappointed with ADKOT. I recognized half of it immediately. The remaining songs are sub par. Sammy also has the right to trash EVH. Eddie & Roth have said enough crap about him & EVH has made some nasty remarks about mike Anthony, who's only crime was to be Sammy's friend. I think Chicken Foot is good stuff, it reeks of fun.

Sammy does have a point the new van halen album does suck and they aren't half as good live as they used to be where as chickenfoot is full of great musicians at the top of their game

Even if it was based on old demo tapes, van halen was smart enough to realize it sounds good and arrange it well. All the interviews i have read about Eddie van halen and his writing process, he says he makes tapes of guitar riffs and shows them to the rest of the band. Then they make songs based on those riffs. Sounds like the same process to me just that the demo tape of riffs was a lot older. I know one thing, i love the new van halen album. I havnt heard on single chickfoot song that i like. Most of the van halen material with Sammy hagger sounded like music you would write for a car commercial or sports drink. I did like most of the 5150 album though.

Sam does come across as a really bitter jilted woman, he should really just stop with all the haterade he spews against his old mates in VH.

The new VH album rocks EVH playing live right now like a man on a mission at 58 he is just flatout playing his ass off my hat is off to VH ROCK ON !

avatar

Hypoxic

Jeez, Sammy has really been pumping out the whine these past few months. What a chump. Many bands go back into their catalogues and record/release older material. VH did it when Sammy was in the band, and they made hits out of it, for fuck's sake ("Right Now", anyone?).

The first four songs alone on A Different Kind of Truth kick the shit off of everything Chickenfoot has ever released.

avatar

jhs5150

Well Sammy, you're wrong. I don't get this guy. He is still whining about VH. STFU already.

I have both CF albums and the new VH. As much as I love Satch as a guitarist - I never miss his solo tours, and always liked Michael Anthony, the bottom line is the CF albums are nothing special while the new VH album is an IN-YOUR-FACE-SLAM-DUNK.

MA has said he loved being in VH. If he didn't he wouldn't have toured with them in '04 as basically a hired gun.

Eddie sounds great and never played better, Wolf is a solid bassist considering he is 20 YEARS OLD! I'll bet Anthony wasn't that good when he was 20, and Roth is well - Roth. If Sammy says Roth can't sing anymore you should hear Sammy live - nothing to write home about.

I'm going to see VH at least 2x. After reading Sammy's whining I'm not going to see CF at all. I'll wait for Satch's next tour. His 3D Saturator movie is out now and I'll see that next week.

Sammy needs to be humble and be thankful. He's rich and can do whatever he wants, so he should stop whining about VH and focus on his own band.

"Stripping Van Halen down to their core: a duel for attention between David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen. Where Sammy enabled Eddie's ambitions, Diamond Dave unleashes the guitarist's id, taunting him to play faster, harder, tougher, then fighting for space between unwieldy riffs.Van Halen are using their history to revive their present and they succeed surprisingly well on A Different Kind of Truth."

That member for member comparison between Chicketfoot and Van Halen left out a couple of fundamental elements. Eddie is a much much better song writer than anyone in Chicketfoot, hands down. Dave writes better lyrics and he is just more of a rock and roll personality. Way more entertaining. Put Dave and Ed together and there is a synergy there that is bigger and better than Chickenfoot.

>>>Obviously we all have our own opinions on what sounds good to our ears, but for the boring haters who just like to write a bunch of BS bc it makes them feel better about living in moms basement and they can continue to be anonymous douchebags bc that's what they do.<<<

Hmmm. Sammy Hagar's down on the new VH album because he's a douchebag hater who still lives in Mom's basement. Yeah, that's probably it.

By the way...it might be time to retire that Mom's-basement zinger, as the tread wore off of those tires a few thousand miles ago.

avatar

Sabian630

Sammy...c'mon man what the fuck is that high school BS?!? I've always liked both versions of VH ( even a cpl songs with Gary Cerone) but IMO Roth is THE man who rightfully belongs leading the Van Halen family. I always thought Sammy was a cool dude overall, but these comments I can only hope were somehow taken out of context maybe? I hope so, bc he sounds like a jilted lover. Yes, Sammy has a better overall singing voice technically, but he can't hold a candle to Dave's lyrics..no fcn way IMO.

Enough of this BS talk about them rehashing some old songs too...who really gives a fuck about that? It's THEIR music for crying out loud. You can't steal from your own material can you?! I think it's great that they went back and looked through what must have been thousands of riffs and grooves and redid them to sound kickass!

Obviously we all have our own opinions on what sounds good to our ears, but for the boring haters who just like to write a bunch of BS bc it makes them feel better about living in moms basement and they can continue to be anonymous douchebags bc that's what they do.

Lastly, I think the new VH kicks total ass! I highly suggest getting the special edition CD/DVD. There is some great things on the DVD. Enjoy!!

Good Lord Sammy, you sound like a bitter, pissed off, divorced bitch on the rag, that hasn't gotten laid since WAY before the divorce!! I mean really dude, it's in the past; let it go!!! You've got a great career, a decent tequila, a pretty damn good band (I don't know about Super Group, I think that's a stretch), so why are you still so pissed off at the Van Halen's?? Let it go, before you get an ulcer....

avatar

Ed Jones

HAGAR the HORRIBLE.... BITTER.... VERY BITTER DUDE!!! Get a life....

avatar

leftycarvin

Sammy is always shooting his mouth off.He should should be happy that Ed is healthy and playing so well again. It is a great time to be a fan of both bands why create so much division?

avatar

mbryan67

Haha! Sammy should have listened to the album before shooting his mouth off! Eat that shit Sammy! New Van Halen Rules! What an asshole.

avatar

mogwai73

How jealous can you get?

Sammy, please remember:
1) your last album with Van Halen was in 1995, Balance (nice record!);
2) after that, "Humans Being", an awesome song for Twister soundtrack;
3) after that, 1996, two great original songs with DLR;
4) after that, 1998, an 100% original album with Gary Cherone;
5) after that, 2007, three (pitiful) songs for the RHRN complation sung by yourself.

This album rocks and overpowers any Chickenfoot album on any day of the week; don't get me wrong, your band sounds great, groovy, funky at times... but it's no Van Halen, dude.

Stop being a cry-baby... get one from Jim Dunlop instead.

avatar

njm74

I just got the new cd. Have a friend on the inside. And all I can say is HOLY SHIT IT FUCKING ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is what alll Van Halen fans have been waiting for.
And to all that don't like it, never call yourself a Van Halen fan and stop posting negative comments. You ruin it for those of us that love them.

avatar

jasonbogen

As a fan who has taken Sammy's side in most of these issues, I have to say these comments are a big disappointment. First of all, it's exactly what long time VH fans want to hear so he is wrong to begin with. Beyond that and more importantly as a fan of Hagar, this type of thing is beneath him and against the attitude that makes him great. It's so petty and unnecessary. How much cooler would it have been of him to come out and say how great the album is and how glad he is for VH fans that there is a new VH album? He can still find little ways to get his jabs in, but that would have been more classic Sammy. I can't defend this one. He really does look petty and jealous with this.

avatar

jhs5150

Good point jasonbogen. Eddie has said that he wishes them well, and all Sammy can do is whine.

avatar

mogwai73

Agreed, 100%.

avatar

zappa73

To Jason - I second everything you just said. I love the fact that Hagar is always building bridges with other artists - part of what makes him cool is his sense of inclusiveness.

This just comes across as bitter.

And the new VH is awesome - Roth was always able to add the R&B infused bluegrass feel to the VH sound ("Women and Children First", "Big Bad Bill", "Could this be Magic?"...etc.)

Love the mix on the new VH so far.

And while I love Chickenfoot, Hagar is being a bitter douche.

avatar

mogwai73

You nailed it... it's so not-Sammy acting like this!

Chickenfoot is a decent, groovy, funky outfit... who is he to bash the band he joined (twice) after they were famous?

Shame.
Pitiful, I'd say.

avatar

jhs5150

Sounds like VH out-funked CF on "The Trouble With Never."

avatar

miketala

I can't believe how bitter Sammy is.

He obviously hasn't read the several thousands posts over at VHND.com (van halen news desk). Or maybe he has and is trying to do damage control. Fans such as myself are eating up the new stuff.

There are some damn wicked lyrics (like it or not, Roth has bona fide smarts: he comes from a line of physicians/surgeons, and an uncle is a neurosurgeon).

There are brilliant, catchy rhythms and ferocious lead guitars as well.

Stay Frosty and You And Your Blues are perhaps the favorites of mine thus far...

avatar

guitarladd

Hagar is just being an asshole, nothing new about that. He always as been an arrogant SOB. He probably thinks the only Van Halen worth listening to was when he was in it. Why are you always hearing Van Hagar maligned? Apparently a lot of people prefer Dave. As far as Chickenfoot, I'd rather hear a Satriani solo album.

avatar

jhs5150

Great point guitarladd. This is why Eddie has said Sammy suffers from LSD - Lead Singer Disease. He still thinks the world revolves around him. Satch won't put up with it too long, don't be surprised if he bails. Then what? Is Sammy gonna bash him too? Then it'll be over for Sammy - NOBODY will want to work with him.

avatar

johnny_guitar

I agree. It was a step in the wrong direction for Satch to pair up with Sammy. I stopped listening to Van Halen when Sammy signed on because I did not like his vocals - too much screaming. I am happy to be back in the Van Halen camp now. Love their music. Eddie is great on the guitar. Van Halen is much better without Sammy. I think that Van Halen should consider an instrumental album - no vocals at all.

avatar

57 Stratman

Or maybe a totally acoustic album? Maybe take a shot in a totally different direction; how about blues album?

avatar

epolite148

if it wasn't for eddie's guitar playing all van halen albums would suck. dave sucks he cant sing now or before! the new songs really suck! at least sammy can still sing.

avatar

kody2727

Well first of all, who the FUCK cares about either band?

Honestly, is anyone in Chickenfoot or Van Halen artistically relevant in today's universe? No.

Secondly, Sammy Hagar was the worst thing to happen to Van Gaylen.
Chickenfoot is not only the worst thing to happen to 4 piece rock bands, they're the absolute worst thing period.

And after listening to Van Halens new single, I'd rather watch Eddie foam out the mouth on Celebrity Rehab than listen to one more second of this decrepit piece of shit they call an album.

avatar

More2

The real question is why would somebody who doesn't care, take the time to post a comment asking why anyone would care????

avatar

57 Stratman

Hey Kody, who the fuck cares about your opinions?? No-one that's who. When you have an album on the market that is superior to anything Van Halen or Chickenfoot has done, then you have something to spout off about, until then, why don't you do the rest of the universe a favor, and SIT DOWN AND SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!

avatar

crisongs

Wow! what can I say? You have ur opinions. That's why it's called America. But I think both bands are very talented.Yes Daves' voice has changed,he seems to have lost his swagger he had in the 70's.BUT he's/they're out there rockin'!And God Bless em for it!

avatar

mogwai73

Hey there!

I agree with you... but just wanted to say it's called "America" because the italian Americo Vespucio found it in the first place... ehehe!
Just kiddin' !!!

It's so not-Sammy to bash other people.
What gives?

Both times he joined Van Halen (1985 and 2004), they were hugely famous and mostly because of the Roth years... why go there, anyway?

avatar

racumin

Hey kody2727: You know who the fuck cares? I DO. I'll always care about Eddie and his work.
And yeah, who is "relevant" to you these days? Black Veil Brides (to name one)? dudes so covered in tattoos and makeup you can barely tell who they are, who whine about their crappy childhood?? at least VH sing about ADULT themes and smile on stage. (btw, their guitar player says his biggest influence is -yes, you guessed it- EDDIE.)
Having said that, Hagar does sound a bit bitter. And Van Hagar was awesome too. SUCK MY DICK.

avatar

johnnycnote

Re: "at least VH sing about ADULT themes and smile on stage."

Oh, like "Hot for Teacher"?

avatar

57 Stratman

Johnny, I believe he was referring to Van Halen's latest work, not a commercial hit made 30the years ago...

avatar

guitarladd

Just who do you think is relevant in today's universe? Lady GaGa? Either Van Halen or Chickenfoot are as relevant as any other rock band today. Just who do you think is relevant? Alt Rock bands, Death Metal bands, American Idol winners? Or (again) Lady GaGa?

avatar

DblHumbucker

If you don't care about either band then why are you commenting? It's obvious that you haven't heard the other sound samples of VH's new album. I thought, and still think, their new single "Tattoo" blows. The rest of the album has restored my faith in the band though. Check out "China Town" "The Trouble With Never" or "As Is" on you tube. If you don't like any of those samples then you never were a fan of VH to begin with.

Seriously, what rock band IS "relevant in today's universe"?

avatar

jhs5150

Gotta disagree. "Tattoo" is a radio-friendly song which is exactly why they put it out first. I think it stands up on its own. I like it better than "Jump" to be honest. "She's The Woman" is also radio friendly and I think it kicks ass. They should release that next. I don't think there's a bad song on the album though I like some better than others. "Big River" is not a fave of mine but it's tolerable, IMO.

avatar

Jambuoy

If you want to listen to a 4 piece that smokes CHICKENFART, listen to BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION. Van Halen, has and always will be, Eddie and Dave!!!! Fuck Sammy!!!

avatar

guitarladd

Damn straight! Joe Bonamassa is the best guitar player playing today. None of that fancy shredding or tapping, although nothing wrong with that really, but Bonamassa plays real guitar, the kind I like to hear.

avatar

jhs5150

Gotta disagree. Bonamassa is trying to do the Gary Moore with-the-blues-backup-band thing and it doesn't work. If you want to hear it done well and right listen to Moore's "Still Got The Blues" CD - you'll throw your Bonamassa albums in the trash.

avatar

johnny_guitar

Agreed.

avatar

DblHumbucker

Just to clarify, there are 6 new tracks & 7 reworked demo tracks on Van Halen's new album. The irony here is that VH's reworking of older demo material is 1000 times better than anything Sammy is doing with Chickenflop & so are the 6 new songs for that matter.

Hagar has some serious issues, for someone who's so content with his "supergroup" this guy just can't seem to keep his fat piehole shut when it comes to Van Halen. He's become worse then the psychotic stalking ex-girlfriend now. Seriously, MOVE ON already!!

Everything sample I've heard so far on the new Van Halen album with Roth sounds KILLER! I thank god Sammy isn't ruining any of it by crooning about love or aliens!

avatar

FretboardMagician

Wow Hagar - wow to sound like a bitter douche. Seriously, trying to compare Satch to Eddie? And yea they went back to the old stuff - because they have TONS of gems in there to work with.

What an asshole.

avatar

jerrygee

Well, lets not slip off the handle Sammy just stating his opinion about what he hears. On the other hand who cares, but remember it's Rock n roll. Yes VH back but at what cost to revamp old stuff or to create new stuff. VH doesn't really have much to prove these days after playing rock for so many years, but it would be nice if the raise the bar they are veteran rockers. I would like to see more tighter songs stating how serious they are, but I like I said it's rock n roll and you know what that means (mean streets). For Sammy the last albums wasn't much to write home about they may have rushed to fast into the studio and crashed oh well it happens to the best. Better luck next time.

avatar

jhs5150

Seems to me Sammy has been bashing VH every chance he gets. There's 3 or four interviews on this website alone where he's bashing them. He sounds like the bitter ex-wife. Get over it, Sammy.

avatar

scottd1984

Sammy,NO ONE Cares WHAT YOU THINK ANYMORE!!!! Quit beating a dead horse Man!!!!

avatar

spiderbob

I like Sammy and Chickenfoot.
But music really isn't a competition as Sammy puts it.
I get tired of listening to nonstop shredding real quick and thankfully Chickenfoot isn't that way.I can shred a lot easier than writing a great song.
It sounds like Eddies back to me. Where would guitar rock be if it were not for VH?
All the VH tracks I've heard are real good.I'm glad they re hashed the old riffs.
VH has less POP with Dave and more Rock.
I'm more a fan of good Rock than syrup POP.....but I guess POP pays the bills.

avatar

shopson67

Hey Sammy, you're not in VH anymore, you quit that band. This isn't about you, get over yourself. By the way, YOUR new Chickenfoot album only has a couple good tracks on it, what's your excuse?
