Sitting around at a fiddle camp, I heard Tony McManus say (tongue in cheek) something like, "I just don't understand guitar collectors. Who needs more than twenty guitars?"

You forgot to mention the OBVIOUS,Ron. We ALWAYS have extra guitars on hand in the event of a technical malfunction during a live performance gig or any event where time is limited to get into "E.T.M."(Emergency Tech Mode). As a live performing musician,if I blast a string during an "Opener" or "Direct support" slot I have NO TIME to replace a string.I just grab my back-up,quick-check the tuning and BOOM,I'm back in it.

Great Point DAVE! I do bring extra EVERYTHING...amps, strings, clothespins? (They work great for holding music paper up!) I actually had the craziest experience at a gig recently...I brought 2 Ibanez RG's...the place was hot and humid...halfway through the gig the volume pot froze in the on position! I grabbed the 2nd RG and after about 20 minutes the Pot froze in the off Position! I regrabbed the 1st one and used my Pod XT pedal Board Volume Pedal for Volume changes and swells...Unbelievable! Did immediately change out the pots when I got home for new and obviously better quality ones...hasn't happened again...but now I bring 3 guitars!

"Why do we need so many guitars?" - It doesn't have anything to do with "NEED" my friend!

And don't forget about alternate tunings - Why have four guitars in standard tuning when you can have four guitars in four different tunings (none of which is standard)? I know I'll never match Sonic Youth in that regard but I'm still gonna try!

I hear ya! I personally have enough trouble in Standard tuning! LOL! Great comment! Thanks!
