Slayer guitarist Kerry King says that when the group went into the studio to make what would become its thrash masterpiece, Reign in Blood, they were “just a bunch of angry punks making a record we thought was cool.” What they didn’t realize was just how cool it would be (or how afraid it would make people of Slayer). “We were kids, like 22 years old,” says King. “We thought we made up a real good record, and that we’d outdone our last one. That’s all it was about back then.”
The November 2011 issue of Guitar World is available now, and it's a good one (if I do say so myself). First of all, there's the Big Four historic photo shoot, as represented on the cover and the two-sided fold-out poster inside (featuring James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine, reunited for the first time in years). Guitar World did the impossible, getting Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Mustaine, Kerry King and Scott Ian gather for a roundtable discussion about their music, history and the greatest thrash tour of all time.
Last week's Big Four show was a historic occasion, to say the least. The world's four biggest thrash metal bands took the stage at Yankee Stadium for what has to be the biggest metal show ever to hit the East Coast.
As is now customary, last night's Big Four show at Yankee Stadium featured a "jam" with members of all four bands -- Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax -- taking the stage to perform a classic song. Usually, the track has been Diamond Head's "Am I Evil?," but last night, the bands played a song they had never before played together: Motorhead's "Overkill."
The Big Four. Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth and Metallica. Not only are they our November cover stars, but it just so happens that today, September 14, they're playing just their second-ever U.S. show at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY.
In case you've been living under a rock, the November issue of Guitar World features the members of the Big Four by way of an epic cover shoot that took place in Milan, Italy. Now, you can check out an exclusive gallery of outtakes from one of the most historic GW covers of all time below.
The Metal Masters Clinic 2 — featuring Slayer's Kerry King, Anthrax's Frank Bello and Charlie Benante, Megadeth's David Ellefson, and drum legend Mike Portnoy—is taking place today at the Best Buy Theater in New York City.
