Last month, Guitar World kicked off its first transcription challenge — and we picked a good song to set the tone for the monthly contest: Jason Becker's instrumental masterpiece, "Perpetual Burn." The song has been a perpetual source of inspiration (and challenge) for guitarists since it was released in 1988.
Here are some of the videos we've been sent by guitarists who have entered our "Perpetual Burn" Challenge. If you don't know about the challenge, which started early this month, you can find all the info you need right here.
Jason Becker's instrumental masterpiece, "Perpetual Burn," has been a perpetual source of inspiration — and challenge — for guitarists since it was originally released in 1988. In fact, we decided to challenge our own staff, who turned in a spot-on, 17-page transcription of Becker's shred classic in the new July 2013 issue of Guitar World magazine. Now it's time to challenge you!
Throughout this title track to Jason Becker’s landmark 1988 debut album, the phenomenally gifted and accomplished young guitarist frequently employs a lead-playing technique known as sweep picking to help perform the many swift and nimble-fingered arpeggios used to convey his classical virtuoso-style melodic ideas.
On Page 30 of the all-new July 2013 issue of Guitar World, Jeff Loomis discusses this video, which he created and sent us back in March. It shows Loomis tackling Jason Becker's "Perpetual Burn" to a backing track — and pulling it off in one impressive sitting.
The Jason Becker Not Dead Yet 2 Concert will take place 7 p.m. January 23 at Slim's in San Francisco, California. The guitar-heavy bill will feature Steve Morse, Uli Jon Roth, Richie Kotzen, Gus G of Firewind and Ozzy Osbourne's band, Michael Lee Firkins, Jude Gold, Gretchen Menn and more.
