I did my entry but the contest is restricted only for US and Canada.
I'm so sad for this but it was an amazing test and i enjoyed so much.

Sorry about that, fabiophonic!

Will videos of the whole song being played be favored? Or is it strictly the 6-18 bars that will be considered? Great transcription by the way. Not sure its perfect but that's certainly a tough piece to tackle!

We'll look at everything!

Guitar world polls suck...

Hello!

I have sent my video, but did not send in an entry so I'm assuming my video is void that I sent. Would it be alright if I just sent another video, along with my entry? I want to make sure I'm doing this right

xjackinthebox: You don't really have to "send in" an entry. If you're age 18 or older and live in the US or Canada, just fill out the online entry form, which you can find right here: http://www.guitarworld.com/enter-guitar-worlds-perpetual-burn-challenge-and-win-carvin-jb200c-jason-becker-tribute-guitar

alright that sounds good! I have another question; Will it count against me if my video is the whole song? Or will I need to have only the 36 or so seconds of the main theme?

avatar

dfanelli

It won't count against you.

aprzez

Can I take part (Poland) or only people from the States and Canada are allowed?

avatar

dfanelli

Hi there, aprzez. Be sure to check out the official GW contest rules, which you can find here: http://www.guitarworld.com/official_contest_rules. GW contests (at the moment) are limited to residents of the US and Canada. "Sweepstakes open to legal residents of the United States and Canada."

aprzez

That's too bad man. I'm going to do it anyway just for fun.

cip123

Do you have to be 18? I mean jason was 16-17 when he wrote the song

avatar

dfanelli

Thanks for writing, cip123. You make a good point, but we're sticking to the usual GW contest rules, as always. You can find them here: http://www.guitarworld.com/official_contest_rules. "Entrants must be at least 18 years of age at time of entry, and possess a valid form of identification."

I gotta say the GW tab is a bit off...

the intro,A section, the second arp is off by one note, and a total miss on the 3rd arpeggio which is a mode marty introduced to jason which is a G Hirajoshi(no 3rd),
and at the end of the 16th measure (Bsection)its a Aminor arp not a major, the intervalic arpeggios in measure 17 fingering are off,the rest good job.

In my opinion,Peter Lidstrom did the best transcription many years ago,and we can't disrespect Ernesto Homeyer, great transcription of this great piece of ART.

Sllapur

I agree entirely with your analysis, being the same observations I made. I have a feeling that GW will find it wise to allow for discrepancies, based on the fact that there are many tabs available previous to their own, and, on top of that, their own tab does not present an accurate (and therefore enticing) transcription.

I find Ernesto's tabs to be almost perfect, as they were reviewed even by Jason (in the form of watching the instructional videos I made based off them) who said they were about 98% accurate, if I remember correctly. He said he could not remember some things because it's been a long time, which is totally understandable. I also reviewed the tabs by using Transcribe!, which is a phenomenal application to slow-down music with minor digital artifacts to be heard, and the notes, slides, nuances; they were all correct.

So, what is going to be the verdict? Force those of us who have already learned, with a more accurate tab, the song to re-learn it based on GW's tabs, or will there be a good amount of leeway allowed in the execution?

I hope GW makes the logical choice.

I've been looking everywhere Ernesto's tabs. do you have a link?

Agreed

GreenBird

Silapur, not trying to be a jerk, but you may want to contact GW directly. I am not sure how much they read or responded to these post.
On another note, Jason Becker was an amazing guitarist and it is cool to see a contest like this. It would be nice to have the tab easily accessible online for people like Silapur who plan to play this. After all we did have to watch and add just to read the article.
The Jeff Loomis cover was great.

Sllapur

Hey GreenBird, I find your comment not rude at all. I appreciate the feedback. I was thinking the same about them reading the comments, but then that just adds to, what I think, is a lurking degree of incompetence in the way they are organizing this contest. Oh well, I'm not concerned about it, anymore.

I have a tab, which is sublimely accurate, and I will do a mix and match with the tabs GW have provided.

Cheers!

Hi, Sllapur. Thanks for your thoughts about our "lurking degree of incompetence." Although we're quite happy with our "P.B." transcription, if you feel there are inconsistencies, do what you feel you have to do. We will watch and listen to your video.

Sllapur

There's no necessity for sarcasm, specially showing such blatant sensitivity. What I said is what I truly feel, in regards to a topic I take quite seriously. Maybe take some advice from what I said?

I appreciate that you have given me a good-to-go on a bit of leeway for playing this.

Cheers.

Sllapur

So, I'm noticing a lot of inconsistencies in the tabs, as per the way that Jason played. For example, the third of the arpeggios being on the same string as the root. These are obviously just technicalities, and nobody should worry too much about it, but since I have a good tab of Perpetual Burn already (if you don't believe me, go check out the instructional videos I made for the song at youtube.com/abesluciferius), is it ok if I mix-and-match these tabs with those?

box of dope

ha ha, this guy serious?

Sllapur

What's so unreal about my questions?

Sllapur

Alright, so there is no download available that doesn't require an iPhone or iPad, and a physical copy costs 20 dollars (with shipping) to order, which I can't do as we are moving soon. I live in a very remote area in Canada at the moment and cannot find a physical copy anywhere. I can't print from the iPhone because the printer is not set-up for wireless.

Is there really no better set-up for this? A purchasable, downloadable copy of the issue for personal computers, maybe?

Sllapur

By the way I just paid for the iPhone issue. Not sure what I'll do with that though, as it's impossible to really follow the tablature considering the size, and, as I said, I cannot print it.

Sllapur

One final question; is the purchase of the issue strictly an online download? I would prefer this over getting a physical copy.

Sllapur

There is no link to download the backing track, and searching for it on Soundcloud yields no results.

Sllapur

So, the only way to acquire the tab is by purchasing the issue?
