The necks of these guitars have longer scale lengths but they are set up to accommodate standard light string gauges.

We took a look at Jericho’s Fusion model, which is designed to appeal more to traditional-minded players who prefer the look and features of a classic guitar over those of a modern hot rod.

FEATURES Jericho describes the Fusion as “a modern hybrid of all classically built American guitars.” The single-cutaway body shape, mahogany body with flame maple top, contoured cutaway, and recessed controls are obviously inspired by certain American guitars, but the sum of these parts is a distinctive and different guitar.

Of course, the most distinguishing feature is the neck’s long 26.9-inch scale, which allows players to comfortably tune down to C or even drop the lowest string to Bb (for a drop D-equivalent tuning) while maintaining ideal string tension for playing and perfectly accurate intonation.

For the rest of this review, including FEATURES, PERFORMANCE, the BOTTOM LINE and more, check out the June 2015 issue of Guitar World.

http://www.guitarworld.com/review-jericho-guitars-fusion-video#comments Jericho Guitars June 2015 Videos Electric Guitars News Gear Thu, 23 Apr 2015 16:25:32 +0000 Chris Gill, Video by Nick Vallese 24351 at http://www.guitarworld.com Ritchie Blackmore Shows Off His Favorite Guitars — Video http://www.guitarworld.com/ritchie-blackmore-shows-his-favorite-guitars-video-0
In the video below, former Deep Purple and Rainbow guitarist Ritchie Blackmore—who now plies his trade with Blackmore’s Night—shows off and discusses several of his guitars.

The video also features his wife, Candice Night, another key figure in Blackmore’s Night.

The clip includes instruments Blackmore used during his Deep Purple and Rainbow days, including his main Fender Strat, which he says he’s played for the past 30-plus years.

He also discusses scalloping his fretboards, a process that takes him three days to achieve, and shares a story about a luthier who undid his scalloping handiwork by replaning the fretboard to make it flat again. Apparently, the company creates—or created—an 18-string instrument that combines a 12-string guitar with a six-string bass, all on one neck.

Let's just say that, while our research is still ongoing (We don't want to trust and publish everything that turns up in a random Google search), we did track a video or two, plus a link to a 10-string "Tennessee brand" bass that was sold online several years ago—so you can get a look at these things.

The instrument in the video below is the more interesting of the "Tennessee brand" instruments we've turned up online. As stated above, it has 18 strings, combining a 12-string guitar and a six-string bass, all on one very wide neck.

The clip is just under 1.5 minutes long. Enjoy—and let us know what you think of it in the comments or on Facebook. I'm betting these things aren't made in Tennessee! Through John Page Classic, I’m now able to make the Page custom-design experience available to more people.”

John Page Classic is a cornerstone brand of HRS Unlimited, a new company founded by MI veteran Howard Swimmer to bring forward-thinking business models to MI.

“In a market characterized by custom guitars on the one hand and production guitars on the other, the Ashburn is a new alternative—the first ‘custom production’ guitar,” Swimmer said.

The Ashburn offers several John Page custom design advantages. Its threaded machine bolt neck assembly provides superior tone transfer and a unique complexity to overtones and harmonics. It is equipped with Bloodline by John Page JP-1 pickups, custom voiced by Page and with the bridge pickup reverse-slanted for greater thickness and girth. The Ashburn’s bass-justified fret dots provide greater visibility. Its staggered Gotoh Vintage Style tuners reduce and, in most cases, eliminate the need for string trees.

Page co-founded and led the Fender Custom Shop for its first 12 years and created legendary guitars for artists including Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, David Gilmour, Elliot Easton and Cesar Rosas. The Vela breaks the traditional PRS platform, giving those players a guitar they can trust night after night, and it looks badass.”

The Vela boasts a new offset body shape that is both elegant and edgy. Its pickguard loaded electronics include a PRS-designed Starla humbucker in the bridge, providing a bright, punky tone, and the new PRS-designed Type-D singlecoil in the neck, which gives the Vela some noteworthy bite.

The coil-tap on the tone control allows the bridge pickup to split into singelcoils, expanding the guitar’s tonal range. Anchoring this guitar is the new PRS plate-style bridge with two brass saddles that were designed to compensate for intonation and an aluminum plate, both of which help provide maximum tonal sustain. This bridge harkens back to Paul’s early designs and traditional bass plate-style bridges, but is top-loading for easy restringing.

“The Vela nails all of the vintage tones I’ve become accustomed to in the studio and has become my go to live because of its stable intonation, tuning and playability,” says Thomas Onebane of Royal Teeth.

For full specifications, visit prsguitars.com/s2vela.

http://www.guitarworld.com/prs-guitars-introduces-s2-vela-demo-video#comments PRS Guitars Videos Electric Guitars News Gear Tue, 10 Mar 2015 17:42:17 +0000 Guitar World Staff 23699 at http://www.guitarworld.com Chris Haskett's PRS Custom Nine-String Guitar — Video http://www.guitarworld.com/chris-hasketts-prs-custom-nine-string-guitar-video
Chris Haskett—a former member of the Rollins Band and a guitarist-for-hire for David Bowie, Reeves Gabrels and others—was looking for a guitar with the bottom three strings coursed like a 12-string and the top three strings left single for easy soloing.

So Haskett, a longtime PRS player, took his idea to Paul Reed Smith.

“He’s indulged my idiosyncrasies for a really long time,” Haskett says. “And also he’s just one of the greatest guitar makers in the world. So I approached him and said, ‘Do you think this is completely crazy?' And he said no.”

The guitar started its life as a Custom 22 12-string, so it had a longer headstock, a middle pickup and a 12-string nut and bridge. Rich Hannon at PRS recut the headstock to maintain the PRS look and made all other necessary adjustments.

The result is a guitar that produces the signature tonalities of a Gibson 1275 double-neck on a single-neck instrument.

“One of the most important features of this guitar is the string spacing is correct,” Haskett says. And that’s really what makes it beautifully playable.”

As Haskett told MusicRadar, “The idea’s been kicking around in my head since the 1990s. I wanted to be able to play Led Zeppelin’s ‘Bring It on Home’ and Mahavishnu’s ‘Dance of the Maya’ but not have to have 23 pounds of mahogany ruining my spine.

“I wanted to be able to get the sound of a 12-string but still be free to solo and bend on the high strings. The really signature sounds of a 12-string are the octaves between the E-A-D and G strings. Doubling the B and E just means you always have tuning problems and can't bend. So I thought this was a pretty good solution.”

In the video below, Haskett discusses and plays the guitar. He plays the intro to the Byrds' "So You Want to Be a Rock And Roll Star," which we appreciate.

http://www.guitarworld.com/chris-hasketts-prs-custom-nine-string-guitar-video#comments Chris Haskett PRS Guitars Videos Electric Guitars News Gear Fri, 06 Mar 2015 20:34:12 +0000 Guitar World Staff 23683 at http://www.guitarworld.com Guild Guitars Re-Releases S-100 Polara in Black and White — Demo Video http://www.guitarworld.com/guild-guitars-re-releases-s-100-polara-black-and-white
Guild has announced that the flagship solid-body model in the Newark St. Collection, the S-100 Polara, is now available with Black and White finish options.

The S-100 Polara holds its own among the competition, with a slightly offset mahogany body that’s extremely comfortable to play.

It features dual “Anti-Hum” neck and bridge pickups, which offer a wide range of sound, including the hard-rocking tone most commonly associated with Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, whose S-100 Polaras have accompanied him throughout his career.

Standard features include a one-piece mahogany neck, 24.75-inch scale length, pearloid block inlays, three-way pickup toggle switch, Grover Sta-Tite tuning machines, and Guild’s “stop” tailpiece.
