This is one of those times!

Below, check out a 3.5-minute demo video of the Marshall DSL 100H amp head.

From Marshall:

From rehearsal room to live performance, the DSL100H all-valve head is truly versatile. With its classic and ultra gain channels, it can take you from brilliant cleans to high-gain shred, and all places in-between. It’s based on the massively popular JCM2000 DSL100H, and has the same valve complement – four ECC83 in the preamp and four EL34 in the power stage – and the same feature set.

There are however some significant upgrades: resonance control replaces the deep switch, allowing you more control of the lower-end chunk; studio quality digital reverb instead of spring; there’s a rear panel pentode/triode switch which will drop power from 100 Watts to 50 Watts, and a rear panel series FX loop.

The flexibility of the shared five-way EQ section is increased further by a mid-shift button which scoops the mid frequencies, making it ideal for modern metal styles.

The DSL100H, with awesome tone and real flexibility, is incredible value for money.

For more on the amp, head here.

http://www.guitarworld.com/marshall-dsl-100h-amp-head-guitar-center-demo-video#comments Guitar Center Marshall Amplification Videos Amps News Gear Mon, 27 Oct 2014 15:27:52 +0000 Guitar World Staff 22675 at http://www.guitarworld.com Marshall Amplification's Handwired Series Amps, Behind-the-Scenes Video http://www.guitarworld.com/marshall-amplifications-handwired-series-amps-behind-scenes-video
Below, check out a brand-new video posted today, July 14, by Marshall Amplification.

The clip is dedicated to the company's Handwired Series of all-valve amps.

From the company:

The Handwired Series celebrates the legacy of more than 50 years of Marshall's influence on the sound of rock and British blues music. These handcrafted reissues capture in detail the authentic, legendary sound of Marshall, not only for connoisseurs and collectors, but also for a new generation of gear-savvy musicians.

The hand-soldered, all-valve 1962HW is a faithful recreation of the classic Series II 1962, 2 x 12" combo. This legendary 30 Watt, two-channel amp was born in 1965 and was famously used by Eric Clapton with one of the most influential blues bands, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, in 1966 — hence the 1962′s commonly used "Bluesbreaker" nickname.

For more information on the Handwired Series, head to marshallamps.com.

http://www.guitarworld.com/marshall-amplifications-handwired-series-amps-behind-scenes-video#comments Marshall Marshall Amplification Amps News Gear Mon, 14 Jul 2014 14:30:58 +0000 Guitar World Staff 21813 at http://www.guitarworld.com Marshall AS50D Acoustic Combo Amp — Demo Video http://www.guitarworld.com/marshall-as50d-acoustic-combo-amp-demo-video
Guitar Center recently started creating "product spotlight" videos for gear that happens to be available at their stores. This legendary, 30-Watt, two-channel amp was born in 1965 and used on one of the most influential blues albums of all-time, hence the combo’s commonly used "Bluesbreaker" nickname. The 1962HW replicates the format and topology of the first production run, right the way down to the unique sonic impact the original,valve-driven Tremolo circuit imparted. Drake revisited the original transformers using original paperwork and the amp is loaded with a pair of 12” Celestion 25 Watt G12C “Greenback” speakers.

Valve Compliment: 4 x ECC83 (one used for Tremolo); 1 x GZ34 rectifier; 2 x KT66

2245THW: Handwired, 30 Watt, all-valve head with Tremolo

The Handwired, all-valve 2245THW is an exact replica of the extremely rare and much sought-after "Bluesbreaker" 30 Watt head. As you might expect, the specifications for the 2245THW are exactly the same as the 1962HW "Bluesbreaker" combo, except for the speakers, of course.

Valve Compliment: 4 x ECC83 (one used for Tremolo); 1 x GZ34 rectifier; 2 x KT66

1973X: Handwired, 18 Watt, all-valve 2x12” Combo with Tremolo

The 1973 18-Watt, twin-channel, all-valve 2x12” combo with valve-driven Tremolo was originally produced from 1966 to 1968. The 1973X is an exactingly accurate replica of this highly revered, EL84 valve-powered amp, right the way down to the aluminum chassis. Armed with valve-driven tremolo and no negative feedback in its cathode-biased output stage, the 1973X is an extremely straightforward amplifier. Channel 1 (the non-Tremolo channel) only boasts two, self-explanatory controls: Volume and Tone; while Channel 2, the Tremolo Channel, boasts four – namely Volume and Tone, plus Speed and Intensity for the valve driven tremolo circuit. The 1973 is loaded with proprietary, “aged” 20 Watt Celestion T1221 12” speakers, specially designed with ‘softened-with-age’ sonic qualities.

Valve Compliment: 3 x ECC83 (one used for Tremolo); 1 x EZ81 rectifier; 2 x EL84.

1958X: 18 Watt Combo. The 1958X is a handwired reissue of the extremely rare1958. The 1958X’s specs are identical to that of the 1973X except that 2 x 10” Celestion G10F-15 16 Ohm, 15 Watt speakers have been selected for their tonal authenticity.

Valve Compliment: 3 x ECC83 (one used for Tremolo); 1 x EZ81 rectifier; 2 x EL84.

For more information, visit marshallamps.us.

http://www.guitarworld.com/namm-2014-marshall-amplification-expands-handwired-series-four-new-models#comments Marshall Marshall Amplification NAMM 2014 Amps News Gear Thu, 23 Jan 2014 13:12:00 +0000 Guitar World Staff 20237 at http://www.guitarworld.com Review: Marshall Amplification JVM410HJS Joe Satriani Head http://www.guitarworld.com/review-marshall-amplification-jvm410hjs-joe-satriani-head
As wacky as this may sound, I find that amps are a lot like meat. Stay with me now. Some amps are reliable, easy to work with, not too heavy, and fine to enjoy every day, like chicken. Other amps are wild and exotic but still familiar, like bison, venison, or duck.

Then there are amps that are smoky, spicy, and dripping with fat—the electronic equivalent of a barbecued rack of pork ribs. See where I’m going with this?

Well, just as beef is the king of the critters when it comes to delectable delights, Marshall is the reigning amp for rockers who want something big, bold, muscular, and satisfying. Now I hope I don’t offend Joe Satriani’s vegetarian sensibilities by saying this, but his new Marshall JVM410HJS Joe Satriani amp head is like a butcher’s sampler pack of prime cuts of beef, delivering everything from the juicy, daily grind of its plexi tones to mouthwatering thick and rich overdrive textures that overwhelm the senses like a Kobe rib-eye steak.

While other varieties of amps may provide pleasant distractions from time to time, at the end of the day the Marshall sound is the meat of the matter when you gotta rock, and the Marshall JVM410HJS delivers more ways to rock in style than ever before.

Features
With its four-channel design and 28 knobs arranged in six distinct sections, the JVM410HJS looks almost identical to its predecessor, the JVM410H. Closer examination reveals several key differences, such as the replacement of the reverb section with noise gate controls for each channel and the addition of a Mid Shift button placed between the OD1 and OD2 channel controls. Marshall made numerous changes to the internal circuitry as well, working closely with Satriani to dial in the tonal character and dynamic response to his preferences.

Each of the JVM410HJS’s four channels (Clean, Crunch, OD1 and OD2) has its own volume, gain, bass, middle and treble controls as well as its own mode switch that is used for selecting a channel and for scrolling through each channel’s own Green, Orange and Red modes, which provide different tone profiles.

The Gate section provides separate threshold controls for each channel plus an enable switch that turns the gate on or off for the currently selected channel. The master section includes separate master 1 and master 2 controls, which are individually assignable to each mode; a master 2 switch for manually switching between master 1 and 2; and resonance and presence controls. Other key features include a programmable foot controller with six switches that connects to the amp via a standard mono 1/4-inch cable, a programmable serial effect loop, a power amp insert, an emulated line output, and MIDI in and thru jacks.

Performance
The JVM410HJS is everything you’d expect a 100-watt Marshall driven by four EL34 and five ECC83 tubes to be, and more. The range of tones that this amp produces is astounding. Whether you want sparkling clean tones, the classic crisp crunch of a plexi, highly saturated and harmonically complex distortion, or any texture in between, this amp does it all, and it makes it very easy for guitarists to instantly access a wide variety of those sounds onstage.

The replacement of the reverb section (which I honestly find useless on most high-gain 100-watt amp heads) with separate noise gates is a stroke of genius, enabling the JVM410HJS to produce studio-quiet tones right out of the box. If you want Joe’s ripping solo sounds, they’re there, with incredible dynamic response and the ability to go from a whisper to a roar with the flick of your guitar’s volume knob. But the amp offers much more for players who want to create their own awesome sonic signatures.

Cheat Sheet
List Price $3,600
Manufacturer Marshall Amplification, marshallamps.com

Each of the four channels has a mode switch that provides a selection of Green, Orange, and Red modes for customizing sound in great detail. The amp is being auctioned off for a charity called Children In Need.

The stack, which was designed by Marshall's custom shop, coincides with Children In Need's latest appeal — and the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, a popular British science-fiction TV show produced by the BBC (and broadcast in the US).

The stack is being auctioned off on eBay (See the link to the live listing below). The winner also will earn a chance to visit the Marshall factory to see the amp being assembled.

If you strip away all the Doctor Who business, the amp is a Marshall JWM 210H head with 1960A and 1960B 4x12 cabinets.

For more information about the amp, visit the amp's listing on eBay. Start bidding! Each boasts all-tube circuitry, a dual-channel design, full/half power switch, digital reverb and more. Amazing, each sells for a street price of under $1,000. For this review, I tried out the two combo models—the DSL15C and DSL40C—which deliver impressive power in portable packages.

Features

Both the DSL15C and DSL40C share certain features, but a handful of differences beyond power output and speaker size are worthy of consideration if choosing between the two. The DSL15C has an ECC83 (12AX7) and a pair of 6V6 power amp tubes, and it has three ECC83 tubes in the preamp section; the DSL40C uses two EL34 tubes for the power amp instead of 6V6s.

The DSL40C has a slight edge in versatility, especially for guitarists who plan on using the amp onstage, thanks to two selectable modes per channel (Clean/Crunch for the Classic Gain channel, and Lead 1/Lead 2 for the Ultra Gain channel), a resonance control, individual reverb level controls for each channel and a series effect loop. Instead of a resonance control, the DSL15C offers a deep switch. The DSL40C has a Celestion Seventy 80 12-inch speaker, while the DSL15C comes with a Celestion G12E-60 10-inch speaker. The DSL40C also weighs about 15 pounds more than the DSL15C.

Common features of both amps include Classic Gain and Ultra Gain channels, each of which has its own gain and volume controls but shares a single set of treble, middle, bass and presence controls and a tone shift switch that scoops the midrange when engaged. A footswitch with individual switches for selecting the channel and bypassing reverb also comes with both models. The rear panels of both models provide a pentode/triode switch (for full- or half-power settings), a footswitch jack, a single 16-ohm speaker output jack, and two eight-ohm speaker output jacks.

Performance

The two selectable modes per channel on the DSL40C give it a slight edge in versatility compared to the DSL15C, but both combos provide a full selection of Marshall tones, including sparkling clean, raunchy crunch, aggressive overdrive and ultraviolent modern metal distortion.

The biggest differences are that the DSL40C’s Crunch setting provides more overdrive than is available from the DSL15C’s Classic Gain channel and the Lead 2 setting adds thicker midrange than you can get from the DSL15C’s Ultra Gain channel. However, thanks to its 6V6 tubes, the DSL15C’s distortion tones are slightly more dynamic, tight and harmonically complex compared to the somewhat compressed and darker tones of the DSL40C’s EL34 tubes.

The tone controls on both models offer much greater tonal range than the average guitar amp, with the treble and presence controls providing particularly sharp, brilliant textures past the one o’clock mark. However, the added range actually makes it easier to dial in pretty much any tone one desires, from the razor-sharp cut of Kerry King’s thrash tones to the hammer-of-the-gods bottom-end punch of James Hetfield’s Ride the Lightning rhythm guitars. Although the combos’ cabinets have open-back designs, the resonance control (DSL40C) and the deep switch (DSL15C) allow these amps to deliver tight, focused bass similar to that of a closed-back 4x12 cabinet.

Both amps are loud enough for small gigs or miking through a sound system, and the half-power settings make either ideal for playing at more moderate volume levels at home. The DSL40C is a better choice for playing live, thanks to its more powerful output, effect loop and individual reverb controls, while the DSL15C is a studio powerhouse that provides a lifetime’s worth of awesome Marshall tones that are perfect for recording.

Cheat Sheet

List Prices DSL15C, $840; DSL40C, $970
MANUFACTURER Marshall Amplification, marshallamps.com

The DSL15C features one ECC83 and two 6V6 tubes in the power amp section, while the DSL40C features one ECC83 and two EL34 tubes.

Both combos feature a shared EQ section for both channels, a Classic Gain channel, an Ultra Gain channel, a tone shift switch, digital spring reverb and a pentode/triode switch.

The DSL40C adds a Clean/Crunch mode switch for the Classic Gain channel, Lead 1/Lead 2 mode switch for the Ultra Gain channel, and effect loop, resonance control and individual reverb controls for each channel.

Both models include a controller with two footswitches for selecting channels and turning reverb on or off.

The Bottom Line

Marshall’s new DSL Series combos deliver an impressive variety of classic and modern Marshall tones in compact, portable packages that are perfect for the stage or studio.

<!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser.
