Carlos Santana will release Shape Shifter, his 36th album and first for his new label, Starfaith Records, on May 15. The album, which features 13 tracks, is mostly instrumental; only one song features vocals by Andy Vargas and Tony Lindsay. Most of the compositions are original songs Santana has been saving for an instrumental project.
Banjo pioneer and bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs, who popularized a complex, three-fingered style of playing banjo that transformed the instrument forever, died of natural causes Wednesday morning at a hospital in Nashville. He was 88.

Maybe those vinyl snobs we all know and tolerate are actually on to something. According to new data released by the Recording Industry Association of America, United States-based sales of 45s -- called "vinyl singles" in the data -- skyrocketed 99.6 percent in 2011. This is based on the retail price of units shipped, which means this only includes new discs, not used 45s.
ZZ Top -- who are planning a new album for 2012 release -- have announced the first dates of their Gang of Outlaws tour, which will feature support from 3 Doors Down and Gretchen Wilson. The tour kicks off May 25 in Manchester, New Hampshire.
