Nine Inch Nails http://www.guitarworld.com/guitar-worlds-battle-greatest-live-bands-round-1-van-halen-vs-nine-inch-nails
We don't know about you, but around here, September brings to mind tours and massive live shows — probably because it's the only month where summer and fall, the two biggest rock touring seasons, collide.

So, as our thoughts turn to the gigs we've reported on, witnessed and celebrated this year, we thought we'd get our readers — as in, you guys! — involved as we attempt to pinpoint rock's greatest live band or artist!

Welcome to Guitar World's official readers poll for September (It's the first readers poll we've conducted since November 2013, all you poll haters out there), the Battle of the Greatest Live Bands. It kicked off Wednesday, September 3.

Although we (obviously) had thousands of artists and/or bands to choose from, we decided to narrow things down to a mere 32 names, which is perfect for a month's worth of intense — and fun (it's supposed to be fun, people!) matchups. All the artists were carefully selected by Guitar World's entire editorial staff.

Most importantly, note that this poll involves ONLY still-existing bands, so you won't get to watch the Doors duke it out with Led Zeppelin! Pantera will not go head to head with Cream. The Jimi Hendrix Experience will not compete with ... you get the idea.

Here are our 32 artists, in alphabetical order:

AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, the Allman Brothers Band, Black Sabbath, Dillinger Escape Plan, Eagles, Foo Fighters, Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, Jack White, Kiss, Korn, Metallica, Muse, Nine Inch Nails, Paul McCartney, Pearl Jam, Phish, Queen, Radiohead, Rammstein, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Rolling Stones, Rush, Slayer, Slipknot, Soundgarden, Tool, U2, Van Halen and ZZ Top.

Here's how the bracket was — very unscientifically — compiled:

We drew the artists' names out of a hat (It was, in fact, a Quebec Nordiques baseball-style cap) to help us create our bracket, which is available for your viewing pleasure below. Obviously, none of these of bands are ranked or come from a previously compiled list, so we chose purely random matchups to have as little impact as possible on the final outcome. We're actually pretty pleased with the way the bracket turned out!

Remember that, as with any poll, genre might occasionally clash against genre, so you'll just need to decide which artist has (or has had) the most to offer within his/their genre, perhaps which one has or had more natural talent or technical skill, which one had the biggest influence on other live acts, etc.

Let's get started! As always, you can vote only once per matchup (once per device, that is), and we'll be posting matchups pretty much every day of the month, sometimes more than once per day, just to give you an early warning!

This matchup finds Van Halen going head to head with Nine Inch Nails!

Head HERE to see every matchup so far.

Behold the Current Bracket!

2014.09.05 32 Bracket

Yesterday's Winner

Yesterday, AC/DC (67.63 percent) defeated the Rolling Stones (32.37 percent). If I saw a random bar band flawlessly pull off Joe Satriani's “Satch Boogie” or any Periphery song note for note, I'd be blown away.

Other times it's a cover of something simpler like Bob Dylan's “Don't Think Twice It's Alright,” or in this case, “Find My Way” by Nine Inch Nails. It's easier and more exciting for the band to put their unique twist on the song and try to make it their own by using different techniques and textures.

Here's a guide as to how we made a cover song a band and fan favorite.

First, it's important to check if there are other versions of the song out there. Trent Reznor included remixes with the album, so we decided to start the song with the chord used on the "Oneohtrix Point Never Remix." That's about the only similarity, but it's still a shout-out to that version. We make that section our own by having electronic drums come in and having a “turnaround,” per se, as a way to end the section.

Then here comes guitar! I wanted the guitar pattern to mimic the drums in the original song. It's tough to make a guitar part percussive with alternate picking, especially if you're not playing loud. A way I found to achieve that is courtesy of Tosin Abasi of Animals As Leaders, who uses a double-thumbing technique. I imagine seeing him play is similar to seeing Eddie Van Halen use tapping for the first time.

Using that technique, I was able to make a part that was a bit more bouncy while outlining the E major chord. As the chorus returns, everyone in the band does as well and for the rest of the song, although still not at 100 percent volume yet.

In the final verse, the bass uses a unique tapping lick, as the guitar line is already keeping a thumping pulse. This is why it's important to be a bit curious about the various techniques of guitar playing. Because although they may not necessarily come up in a cover band setting, they can really make a cover song very creative and unique. The more you have to work with, the better.

In the final chorus, we go from electronic drums to real drums, and that's when the song gets to 100 percent. That's a definition of a slow burn and a wonderful payoff for the band and the audience.

Watch/see it here:

Elliott Klein is a New York City-based guitarist/singer/songwriter who plays in Bright and Loud, Party Lights and many more.
<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-additional-content"><legend>Additional Content</legend>

Related Artist:

Nine Inch Nails

</fieldset> http://www.guitarworld.com/find-your-way-how-spice-cover-song#comments Elliott Klein Nine Inch Nails Videos Blogs Sun, 17 Aug 2014 20:38:24 +0000 Elliott Klein 22137 at http://www.guitarworld.com Turning a Cover Song Into Your Own http://www.guitarworld.com/acoustic-nation-turning-cover-song-your-own
I love a great cover performance. Especially one that has a different take than the original, but remains recognizable.

When I hear an artist do a great cover I am even more interested than when I listen to the original, because the artist took something that’s already familiar and added his or her own personality to it. Not only that, but the new performer is paying respect to another artist.

If you are anti covers, I would suggest taking your favorite song and sitting with it. Get really familiar with it and finally play it for your friends or audience and watch them sing along or cheer for a song they already love.

Even though it’s not your own song, it feels amazing to be appreciated for appreciating something else. What do artists and entertainers do? Entertain! And if your audience is happy, then you have done your job and they want to hear more.

Covers are even more important when you need to cover your own song. What?! Yes. Because lots of artists pay producers and studios to produce an album that they can’t even play live or afford to pay the musicians they’d need to perform it like the recording.

So unless you never leave the house, you’re going to have to find a way to cover your own song. This is very necessary! Otherwise you are going to end up doing a karaoke version of your own song, and that won’t work in many music venues. In my case, I had some songs recorded, and I couldn’t afford a band. I had to make my own new arrangements to be able to play my material solo. I also did a bunch of covers on YouTube for my own sake, and from there I actually got hired for several three-hour solo gigs in NYC.

Here are some things to think about to make a cover song your own:

1. Pick a song you already love
If you can’t figure out the original chords on your own then find the best version of a chord chart you can online and play through the song

2. Pick the right key for you
Use a capo if you need to change the key of the song for your vocal abilities. Sometimes the change of a key does wonders. Or even singing an octave up or down.

3. Play with the melody lines and rhythm
If you have a great voice this is even easier because you may have skills the original artist doesn’t have. Perhaps you hear an interesting harmony, or a really great riff. Get a little goofy even and play with the tune. Have fun with your vocals. If you do it a bunch of times you’re bound to get something interesting.

4. Play with genres
Is the song Metal? You might grab a nylon guitar and fingerpick some riffs and slow down the song. If the song is folk or light pop, get into power chords perhaps speeding up the song and getting growly with the vocals.

5. Lightly change the structure
Try starting with a chorus instead of a verse or vice versa. Or play around with speed, and emotional quality of the lyrics. It’s probably best not change lyrics at all, but a slight structure change can be interesting.

6. Pick a song sung by the opposite sex
I absolutely love doing covers by the opposite sex. I love to cover Robert Plant songs, and one of the best covers I saw in NYC was a local male artist covering “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” by Cindy Lauper. So find something you already love that is easy enough for you to play on your instrument, and mess around with keys, timing, dynamics, personality, melody lines, rhythm…and hit record!!! Dare to be different!

Here’s a cover I performed recently at the Sidewalk Café in NYC. It’s a cover of Danzig’s song “Mother.”

And here’s a famous cover, Johnny Cash performing an acoustic version of “Hurt” by Nine In Nails. Wow.

Dorit is a rock singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and Middle Eastern Dancer. I’m sorry to disappoint anyone. that really hurts. but NIN will do an amazing show and I am back where I belong: creating FLUX."

That post, which has since disappeared from Belew's page, was replaced by the following sentence:

"concerning me being part of the 2013 Nine Inch Nails band: it didn't work."

FLUX, by the way, is Belew's solo project. It also describes the state in which Nine Inch Nails' lineup has found itself in 2013. Bassist Eric Avery left the band in May. A week later, former NIN guitarist Robin Finck rejoined the band.

It should be noted that Belew played an important part in Nine Inch Nails' recent reformation. As Reznor explained in a press release earlier this year, "I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas ... which led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be."

And let's not forget the quote that appears in the photo below, which is from Belew's official website:

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-additional-content"><legend>Additional Content</legend>

Related Artist:

Nine Inch Nails

</fieldset> http://www.guitarworld.com/guitarist-adrian-belew-quits-nine-inch-nails-it-didnt-work#comments Adrian Belew Nine Inch Nails News Fri, 07 Jun 2013 15:21:19 +0000 Damian Fanelli 18522 at http://www.guitarworld.com Listen: Nine Inch Nails Premiere New Song, "Came Back Haunted" http://www.guitarworld.com/listen-nine-inch-nails-premiere-new-song-came-back-haunted
Check out "Came Back Haunted," the first song to be released from Hesitation Marks, the upcoming new album by Nine Inch Nails.

Hesitation Marks will be released September 3 by Columbia.

“I’ve been less than honest about what I’ve really been up to lately," said NIN frontman Trent Reznor in a press release.
