To get to be one of the names on that list of players, I still can’t believe it.”

Strauss, however, can more than hold her own in this lineage. A self-taught player, she picked up the guitar at 13 after watching the “head-cutting” finale scene in the 1986 movie Crossroads, in which Ralph Macchio’s character battles Steve Vai in an epic guitar duel.

“As soon as I saw that, it was like a switch went off in my head,” Strauss says. “After that, it was Vai, Vai, Vai, all the time.”

Today, her approach, which mixes arena-rock flash with technique-heavy fretboard acrobatics and searing speed, has made her an in-demand player within guitar circles.

And her résumé is incredibly diverse: Strauss has, among other endeavors, logged time with Los Angeles deathcore act As Blood Runs Black, performed with Jermaine Jackson on a run of stadium shows in South Africa, tackled video-game music with the band Critical Hit, played with rejuvenated Eighties hair metalers Femme Fatale and acted as the in-house guitarist for the Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons–owned LA Kiss arena football team.

Prior to landing the Cooper gig, Strauss was best known for her work in the Iron Maidens, an all-female tribute act to the British metal masters. Strauss, who handled the rhythm and lead parts originally played by Maiden guitarist Dave Murray (her stage name in the group: Mega Murray), says her three years with the Maidens “has been so much fun. They’re pros, and they give the music the respect it deserves.”

The Iron Maidens, in a roundabout way, also helped prepare her for a summer with shock-master Cooper. Says Strauss, “Before the first show with Alice, the guys in his band were giving me all these warnings, like, ‘Be careful, because this is the part where the Frankenstein monster comes out…’ But I just said, ‘Yeah, I know how that is. With the Maidens we have an ‘Eddie’ onstage!’ ” She laughs. “Granted, the Eddie is person-size and the Frankenstein is 20-feet tall. But, you know, other than that it wasn’t such a huge adjustment.”

Photo: Chris Casella

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-additional-content"><legend>Additional Content</legend>

Related Artist:

Alice Cooper

</fieldset> http://www.guitarworld.com/nita-strauss-alice-coopers-new-touring-guitarist-gets-act#comments Alice Cooper Nita Strauss November 2014 Interviews News Features Magazine Tue, 30 Sep 2014 12:05:13 +0000 Richard Bienstock http://www.guitarworld.com/article/22340 ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Videos: Guitarists and Rockers Get Moist for Charity http://www.guitarworld.com/als-ice-bucket-challenge-videos-guitarists-and-rockers-get-moist-charity-video
What if there were one place where you could tune in to see ALS Ice Bucket Challenge videos by your favorite rockers, guitarists and manufacturers of your favorite gear?

Dream no more!

Because there are new Ice Bucket Challenge videos being posted every day, we've decided to make one file out of them, updating it daily — or at least whenever something applicable or interesting comes along.

Right off the bat, below, you'll find videos by Homer Simpson (who was, of course, a member of the Be Sharps), Robert Plant, Steel Panther, Orianthi, Jason Becker, Joe Satriani, Nita Strauss and the Alice Cooper Band, Tommy Emmanuel, John Mayer, Foo Fighters, Ronnie Wood, Corey Taylor, Eddie Vedder, Brian May, Dave Davies (full Kinks reunion in 2015, please!), Geddy Lee of Rush, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, dudes from Carvin Guitars, Paul Reed Smith, Seymour Duncan and, well, the list goes on. "They didn't put an official offer on the table. But they definitely threw it out there. My joking response was, 'Maybe with a strategically placed guitar' [laughs]. I don't think it's actually in the future, but it's fun to joke about."

You might remember Strauss has appeared in Revolver as one of the magazine's Hottest Women in Hard Rock. Strauss went on to defend photos from her Revolver photo shoots:

"If you want to look at the photos in Revolver and think, 'This girl's trying to get attention because she looks the way she does,' then that's fine," she said. "I'm still going to do my same practice regimen, and I'm still going to get on stage and do all my guitar set-ups and swap out my own pickups. I'm still going to do all that stuff too. People are always going to talk."

Before joining Cooper's three-guitar lineup, Strauss was a member of the Iron Maidens.

Check out her entire Revolver "Hottest Chicks" interview here.

And watch her perform Jimi Hendrix's "Foxey Lady" with Alice Cooper below!

http://www.guitarworld.com/alice-cooper-guitarist-nita-strauss-appearing-playboy-they-definitely-threw-it-out-there#comments Nita Strauss Videos News Mon, 14 Jul 2014 15:08:04 +0000 Guitar World Staff http://www.guitarworld.com/article/21816 "Battle of the Best Female Guitarists in the World" — Video http://www.guitarworld.com/battle-best-female-guitarists-world-video
Someone (or something?) named Alizee Defan runs a YouTube channel dedicated to incredible female musicians.

At her action-packed YouTube page, which you can check out here, you'll find videos lauding great female drummers, singers and — of course — guitarists.

Last summer, Alizee Defan created two videos dubbed "Battle of the Best Female Guitarists in the World," and you can check them out below.

True to their titles, the clips certainly do feature some fine fretwork courtesy of a host of guitarists, including Jessica Gardlund (pictured above) and, well, lots of other people whose names we can't seem to locate in the clips (although the Iron Maidens' Nita Strauss and Courtney Cox make an appearance, as does French guitarist Tina S. She’ll now join Cooper’s three-guitar attack, sharing the stage with fellow six-stringers Ryan Roxie and Tommy Henriksen.

I recently spoke to Strauss about the upcoming Cooper tour, her gear and how she got her start.

GUITAR WORLD: Tell me how you got involved with this project.

Kip Winger was the one who actually connected the dots. We met each other on the Monsters of Rock Cruise, where he saw me play. He later heard through the grapevine that Alice was looking for someone, so he sent them a few links and videos of me performing. I was then introduced to Shep Gordon [manager] and Bob Ezrin [producer] who sent me over a few tracks to learn and from there. Everything just seemed to fall into place. I'm so honored and excited to be a part of this project. It's hard to put into words.

What was it like when you first met Alice?

I first met Alice in LA when he was recording some material for his new album. Ezrin called and asked me if I’d like to come down to the studio and meet him. So I went down and got to sit in the studio for Alice’s recording session. He’s such a cool guy. The whole experience was pretty incredible.

What can you tell me about the tour?

Alice has his new film out, Super Duper Alice Cooper, which is a fantastic, super-fun movie. For the tour, we'll be doing 72 cities beginning with a few warmup shows in Michigan and then joining up with the Crüe on July 2. We have a little break in September and then go back out until mid-November.

Do you feel added pressure being in a three-guitar band situation?

I come from a band that played Iron Maiden songs, so the multi-guitar-player thing isn't something that’s really new to me. By the same token, these are iconic songs and I really want to make sure that I do them justice.

What's your live setup going to be like for this tour?

I'll be using Blackstar Series One EL34 heads. I picked those because they have a really classic sound. I also have a TC Electronic G-Force, which is going to run most of the effects, a Voodoo Lab Ground Control, Cry Baby Wah and a Whammy pedal. Simple and effective is the way to do it.

Can you tell me a little about your musical upbringing?

My dad is a musician and I come from a whole line of musicians going back to the composer Johann Strauss. I've always been around music in my house and one day my dad bought me a guitar. But it wasn’t until I saw the ending scene in the movie Crossroads — Steve Vai vs. Ralph Macchio — when it was like, That's what I want to do!" [laughs]. From then on, it was full-speed ahead, and I've never looked back. Just seeing how cool Steve Vai looked and the way he made the guitar sing was so inspirational. To this day, he's still my favorite guitar player.

Do you have advice for female guitar players?

The paramount thing is to always compare yourself to the guitarists you're influenced by. Don’t just limit yourself to female musicians. Compare yourself to the best of the best. If you strive to be the best, that's what you’re going to become.

At what point do you think the feeling of being on a tour of this magnitude will really sink in?

I think it will be that first show and first note — the surreal moment when I see myself standing on stage with Alice Cooper. He's got this larger-than-life persona and wants the same out of the band members. When I'm there playing to him, I think that's when it’s really going to hit me the most.

For more about Strauss, follow her on Facebook. To keep up with Alice Cooper, visit alicecooper.com.

James Wood is a writer, musician and self-proclaimed metalhead who maintains his own website, GoJimmyGo.net. They can rock tight pants. And lord knows, they’ve got the balls to think they can do justice to the songs of the legends.

Yep, they’re all-female tribute bands, and they are kicking ass across the globe.

These six bands are made up of seasoned musicians who are not only serious about laying down an authentic performance of classic rock and metal, but they also bring their own artistry to the table.

So check out these six, um, titillating all-female tribute bands. And who knows; maybe with your help I’ll track down a few more! Share your faves in the comments below.

Misstallica

These ladies rock hard and they aren’t afraid to get loud! OMG, I can’t even re-write this, it’s so good. Straight from their site:

"MISSTALLICA is the WORLD’s ONLY and GREATEST All-Female Tribute to Metallica!!! Formed in 2008 as a side project to the girls’ already successful Queen Diamond (All-Female Tribute to King Diamond), MISSTALLICA was the response to the want and need for old school thrash metal and a pretty face to go with it! MISSTALLICA offers the Metallica experience but with BOOBIES!!!"

Lol! Gina Gleason rocks guitars and vocals while Tiana Jimenez takes on lead guitar duties.

Can an all-female band really do the masters of metal justice? They tracked down all original gear, we’re talking an ’50s-era Les Paul and Telecaster, Supro amp, '60s-era compressor, Hammond organ and a Fuzzbender stomp box. And then they recorded their second album in an all analog studio with producers Perry Margouleff and William Wittman.

This is serious tribute shit. They’ve got the chops. Hell, they’ve toured the world playing some seriously major venues, including coveted spots on Bonnaroo, Rock-am-Ring, VooDoo Festival and more. Yep, Lez Zeppelin performs, records, and pretty much lives, eats and breathes Zeppelin. Are they straight, Are they gay? Who cares. “Definitely. Probably. Maybe,” says Steph Paynes, the lead guitarist and founder of the group. What I do know? They are definitely worth a listen.

Here are the ladies dishing out “Communication Breakdown.” Can you take it?

Judas Priestess

Formed in late 2009, Judas Priestess claims it has “the blessing of the Metal God himself, Judas Priest front man, Rob Halford.” Well, I don’t know about that, but I do know these ladies put their hearts and souls into delivering the goods when it comes to playing the Priest. A staple at motorcycle rallies across the Southern U.S., New York-based Judas Priestess dives into the classic hits and deep album cuts. And I’ve gotta say, in addition to D Mercedes and Josette’s blazing dual lead guitar chops, singer MilitiA is simply mesmerizing.

This video doesn’t do justice to their face-melting live performances. But it’ll give you a little taste of what you’re in for!

PRISS

Billing themselves as “the sexy alter ego of the greatest band of all time,” PRISS does up KISS in full stage makeup. Based in LA, the ladies in PRISS have been honing their chops for several years. With Sharon Needles as “Doll Stanley” and Jennifer Paro as “Lace Frehley,” PRISS excels at dead on guitar goodness. But the best little tidbit I dug up was this video clip of the girls appearing on “Gene Simmons Family Jewels,” when Shannon Tweed joins them at the mic.

Is Gene Simmons on tranquilizers? Anyhow, if you wanna see some Detroit Rock City strut, keep an eye open for PRISS.

Kind of a so-so video recording, but you can tell these ladies are serious about rocking it!

Hell’s Belles

“The best AC/DC cover I’ve heard? There was an all-girl cover band in America called Hell’s Belles!” so says Angus Young himself. And who are we to argue with Angus? Celebrating 11 years of AC/DC extravaganza, the longevity of this group is a statement all its own, testifying to the professionalism, musicianship and pure showmanship of its members.

I love this quote from their site bio: “It’s ever increasingly rare that the fans are amazed by these five ‘Women,’ yet, it’s almost always the fans are blown away by the truth and finesse these 5 musicians present AC/DC, night after night, city to city, tiny bar to grand theatre.” Now that’s what this column is all about. Just rockin’ it like we mean it. You go girls.

Here’s a video of Hell’s Belles rocking “Thunderstruck.”

The Iron Maidens

Perhaps the best known and loved of all female tribute bands, the LA-based Iron Maidens are the breeding ground for serious guitar talent. A couple Iron Maidens guitarists mentioned previously in this column are Nili Brosh and Nita Strauss. The band and its members have been the recipients of many awards including best tribute band, and best in category (guitar, bass, drums, voice) at events such as The Rock City News Awards, The LA Music Awards, and The All Access Magazine Award Show to name a few.

The current lineup has Kirsten “Bruce Chickinson” Rosenberg on vocals, Linda “Nikki McBURRain” McDonald on drums, Courtney “Adriana Smith” Cox and Nita “Mega Murray” Strauss on guitars, and Wanda "Steph Harris" Ortiz on bass. So hot and so good, you’ll walk home with your ears ringing and a smile on your face.

Watch the Iron Maidens perform to a crowd of 40,000. Oh, and prepare to ROCK!

And don't forget to check out the photo gallery below.

Nita Strauss with Consume The Fire

Nita Strauss is hot. Did we say hot? We mean BLAZING! With a striking look coupled with guitar chops that go the distance, Strauss knows how to put on a show. An LA native, Strauss has shared the stage with artists from R&B star Jermaine Jackson to deathcore heavy hitters As Blood Runs. We came across Strauss when we were turned onto the all-female Iron Maiden tribute band The Iron Maidens, a group that seems to be a breeding pool for amazing female guitar talent. Skilled in thrash and prepared to kick all ass that stands in her way of doing so, Strauss is a true guitar disciple. Strauss and her band Consume The Fire are in the studio recording their debut album with producer Logan Mader (Five Finger Death Punch, Devildriver), which will be released in 2012. Learn more here.

Here’s a video of Strauss laying it down with The Iron Maidens:

Ruyter Suys with Nashville Pussy

Leopard-print bra? Check. Skintight leather pants? Check. Riffs that would make Ted Nugent blush? CHECK. An X-rated band name inspired by the Nuge’s live intro to “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang” on 1978’s Double Live Gonzo (“This is a love song. I’d like to dedicate it to all that Nashville Pussy”) and X-rated song titles are still the least-shocking part of the Nashville Pussy experience. Sure, singer Blaine Cartwright’s whiskey-fueled growl and bassist Karen Cuda’s bone-shaking bass notes are nothing to sneeze at, but when Suys sheds her shirt and rips a solo that would put Phil Campbell to shame, the only time you’ll draw your eyes away is to pick your jaw up off the floor. Watch Suys in action and then start praying Nashville Pussy brings their explosive live show to your unworthy town ASAP. And if there’s one thing Bibi McGill has, it’s the talent, the look, and the guts to hold her own (OK, that was three things, but who’s counting?!). McGill picked up the guitar at age 12 and was inspired by Earth Wind & Fire and the Isley Brothers. A professional model called upon for her unique tattoo-toting, afro-sporting style, McGill has scored principal roles in national commercials for companies like Motorola, Nike and Heineken. But it’s her guitar prowess we’re interested in here, and McGill has a naturally tasty, energetic style and can lay it down without blinking. Check out this video compilation of McGill playing the solo for Beyoncé’s “If I Were a Boy,” and you’ll see what we mean! Her seemingly effortless style – which she’s had years to develop (she was barely 10 when the band formed in the early '90s) blends seamlessly with second guitarist Jennie Asplund’s assertive rhythm and lead playing, and Thin Lizzy-style duel leads – albeit a little less metal but no less melodic – can be found all over the Swedish band’s six full length albums. More at saharahotnights.com.

Check out Andersson with Sahara Hotnights live at the Reading Festival in 2002:

Dirty Jenny aka Jen Leigh

If Jimi Hendrix were reborn as a funky, bulldog-loving blonde woman, he’d come back in the form of Dirty Jenny. Now, get yer minds outta the gutter. Leigh took on the moniker Dirty Jenny as a tribute to her grunge-infused tone that would make a good dog howl. She can hold her own and then some, booking her first pro studio credit on Michael Jackson’s HIStory—Past, Present and Future—Book I. She’s shared stages from Carnegie Hall to Toad’s Place with legends like George Clinton and P-Funk, 420 Funk Mob, the Grammy award–winning Sweet Honey in the Rock and Merl Saunders, to name a few. Leigh has just finished mixing her new EP, aptly titled American Bulldog, for Medallion Music. Featuring her unique bend of rock and funk, it’s chock full of nasty grooves and riffs. You can be sure Dirty Jenny will get your toe tapping, your head banging and, well, you’ll just feel good all over. Although you might need to take a shower after! Find out more at dirty-jenny.com.

Here’s a video of Leigh rocking it with George Clinton:

Memphis Minnie

If you think guitar playing is a boys’ club now, try to picture the South in the 1930s. Memphis Minnie – born Lizzie Douglas in Louisiana in 1897 – had no shortage of inspiration to write her cut-to-the-bone songs about hustling, gambling, drinking, no-good men and no-good women stealing her no-good men. She was one of the few women in the late '20s and early '30s to make her living playing the blues and surpassed many of her male contemporaries, paving the way for Little Walter, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Rogers and Muddy Waters (who recorded her song "Bumble Bee"; his version was called "Honey Bee"). When she switched from acoustic guitar to electric, got a bass player and drummer and moved north to Chicago, she helped establish the 1950s Chicago blues sound. She died in 1973, leaving behind an impressive number of classic blues numbers during her incredible 40-year recording career.

Take a listen to "Bumble Bee" here:

Laura Pleasants with Kylesa

Laura Pleasants lives a misnomer, as her guitar playing is anything but “pleasant”! Descriptors like raw, driving, nerve-scraping and just plain aggressive are a boatload more appropriate. Heavier than heavy, Kylesa’s dual drummers drive a tribal war beat that’s like a sledgehammer right to the core, and Pleasants ably joins the fray on both guitar and vocals. Taking their name from "kilesa mara,” a Buddhist term denoting delusory mental states, Kylesa borrows elements of punk, sludge metal, stoner rock, psychedelic rock and a few other styles thrown in for good measure. Check them out at kylesa.com.

Here’s a live performance of Kylesa in Germany:

Marissa Paternoster with Screaming Females

Google Marissa Paternoster, and among dozens of videos of New Jersey’s Screaming Females doing their post-punk, riot grrl metal thing, you’ll hit on a blog called “Fuck Yeah Marissa Paternoster!” Watch any of the videos, and it’s no mystery why, at 24 years old and a diminutive 5’2,” Paternoster can shred like the best of them. And she isn’t afraid to infuse some good old '80s metal solos into the band’s unique blend of Hüsker Dü punk and Bikini Kill angst paired with a Sleater Kinney stripped-down sound. Among the new crop of indie rock bands, Paternoster’s style of jarring dissonant riffs and full-on shredding is regrettably absent; as such, the Females have been garnering loads of attention for infusing sleepy indie rock with a burst of much-needed energy. Drawing upon folk, jazz, pop, soul and world music, Genfan exhibits a mastery of the acoustic guitar that borders on pure magic. Using 29 alternate tunings and the percussive technique she calls "slap-tap," Genfan was crowned 2008 Guitar Player Guitar Superstar in a live performance contest judged by a panel that included Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Elliot Easton, Brendon Small and George Lynch. Luna Guitars offers a signature Vicki Genfan acoustic that meets Genfan’s “dream guitar” specifications, with gorgeous laser-etched embellishments. She has performed at the International Montreal Jazz Festival, Germany’s Open Strings Guitar Festival, Italy’s Soave Guitar Festival, as well as at venues and performing arts centers across the US and abroad. She bought her first guitar in high school – a right-handed Gibson that the southpaw learned to play upside down – and formed an all-girl band, Bobbie Lynn and the Idols, earning the nickname "The Black Elvis," for her electrifying live performances. The Rolling Stones recorded her song "Oh Baby (We Got A Good Thing Goin’)," and Lynn went on to tour as a solo artist with Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Ike and Tina and Stevie Wonder, among others. Her playing style is her own – she wears a finger pick on her left thumb and when she plays rhythm, strums open handed. Her style looks incredibly loose but her rhythm playing is tight as can be, and her bluesy solos are impeccable. See what Barbara’s up to now right here.

Check out Lynn live in ’66, and just try to tell us this isn’t the coolest thing you’ve seen all week:

Laura B.
