“The acclaimed long-life strings are officially back”: Phil Everly’s iconic guitar string brand, Cleartone Strings, has been re-launched in the UK and Ireland – returning its innovative string treatment to players across The Pond
The firm has partnered with a new distributor to bring its pioneering approach to string coating back to the UK and Ireland
Cleartone – the brand founded by a Rock and Roll Famer, whose long-life guitar strings have become globally renowned – has been re-launched in the UK and Ireland, bringing its acclaimed sets of strings to an all-new crop of players.
In 1998, Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers set out to create a more durable, high-quality guitar string, resulting in the formation of Everly Strings. After years of research and development, Everly landed on a pioneering new approach that extended string life without compromising on tone or quality.
Fast forward to 2008, and Everly formally introduced his innovative string-making philosophy and string-coating treatment, now recognized the world over as Cleartone.
Fortunately, the strings can be played the world over, too, because Cleartone is officially back in the UK and Ireland thanks to a new distribution partnership that brings the sought-after sets back to the UK and Irish markets.
The company’s patented treatment is the answer to a decades-old dilemma that has troubled players over generations; namely, strings degrading after mere days or weeks of playing. This coating has a thickness of 0.5-micron, but it’s engineered to be flake-free and fray-free, no matter how hard you play them.
The result is a more protected, longer-lasting string that not only positively impacts the set’s longevity, but also your tone: Cleartone strings have been proven to boost a guitar’s volume by up to 36% and sustain by up to 48%.
The strings are crafted in Salt Lake City, Utah, but thanks to a new partnership with Strings and Things UK, Cleartone strings have now been re-launched in the UK and Ireland, meaning all players can now experience Everly’s innovative long-life strings.
"We are thrilled to partner exclusively with Strings and Things UK, a company that shares our passion for innovation and quality in the music industry,” says Cleartone General Manager Michael Loscalzo.
“This collaboration feels like a natural fit, and we are confident that together, we will bring Cleartone Strings to even more musicians across the UK.”
The Cleartone treatment has been applied to an array of electric, acoustic, bass and nylon string sets.
Highlights from the range include the Electric Heavy Series – crafted with a thicker core for beefier tones, higher volumes and superior sustain, and for withstanding intense playing styles – and the Phosphor Bronze & 80/20 strings, which offer complex overtones, richer sounds… and, of course, longer life.
There’s also the EQ Hybrid Metal Acoustic set, which arrives as the world’s first materially tuned acoustic strings. Crafted to produce an even response across all strings and frequencies, they excel in delivering brilliant clarity, dynamic range and precise tonal output.
This is achieved through a precisely engineered set of alloys, each chosen on a string-by-string basis for a particular tonal purpose. Copper is used for the low E, for instance, because of its increased bass response, while Phosphor Bronze is used for A and D, for a medium low mid-range fullness, and 80/20 Bronze is used for the G delivering a bright, articulate top-end.
The Cleartone science makes a difference. Guitar World has already been hands-on with the electric set, which impressed for its ability to retain its fresh tonal performance.
“After two weeks, my tone remained the same as it was in the first minute of restringing,” wrote GW’s Pete Emery, who also noted that the strings don’t degrade or sound duller, unlike other string brands he’s tried.
