“The pinnacle of sonic engineering”: Ashdown pairs the classic, sought-after valve tone with modern flexibility in its SX guitar amp line
British firm Ashdown is continuing to double down on its promise of optimal tone at an accessible price point with its SX range. First announced in 2024, the lineup is a powerful, all-valve guitar amp series that pairs classic tone with modern flexibility.

The range comes in three amp formats, split between five-watt and 50-watt offerings. Powered by ECC83 and EL84 tubes, the SX-5C delivers 5 watts of “authentic all-valve warmth” through a 12” Celestion speaker. The valve amp is further enhanced by features such as the built-in reverb, an effects loop, and a speaker-emulated out for recording – plus a head alternative for those who prefer the head/cab combo.
On the other hand, the SX-50H is a 50-watt all-valve head, powered by three ECC83 preamp valves and two EL34 power valves, and fully equipped with three foot-switchable channels and a classic tube tone through-and-through.
Like its 5-watt sibling, it comes with in-built reverb – plus additional tone-shaping options via dedicated bass and treble controls, and two drive channels with separate gain dials. Flexibility is front of mind with two recording-out jacks that can easily take this amp from the stage to the studio.
There are several cab options that, according to Ashdown, make “the perfect partner for the SX Heads.” The SX-112A and SX-112F are loaded with a Celestion 70/80 speaker for the classic Celestion character, the 2x12 SX-212A and SX-212F promise to deliver “full-bodied lows” and “articulate mids,” while the chonkiest of them all, the 4x12 SX-412F, is carefully crafted to deliver “punchy lows” and “crisp highs.”
