Sooner or later, guitarists begin to wonder about the modes: what they are, how best to learn them and how to use them effectively when improvising.
Well, in his latest Sensei Series video, guitarist Steve-san Onotera has decided to provide some easily digestible tips on exactly that.
In the clip above, he addresses:
• What Are Modes? :33
• The Harmonic Implications of Modes 2:15
• When to Use Which Modes 4:55
And, if you think you might need to quickly brush up on music theory before taking a taking this trip down the modal stream, be sure to revisit Onotera's earlier video, "The Four Pillars of Music Theory."
Of course, this being Guitar World, we've published a few of our own modes-based lessons over the decades. Consider Andy Aledort's "Applying Modes to Improvised Guitar Solo Ideas, Part 1," Matt Warnock's "Learn All Seven Modes the Easy Way" and Metal Mike's "Unlock the Secrets of the Seven Fundamental Modes Favored by Randy Rhoads."
