You want to hear a good multiple guitarist solo? Check out "21st Century Schizoid Man" by April Wine. They have it all: drums, bass, and guitar. By the way, I don't vote in childish contests. Real musicians don't compete, they compliment each other, unless there is money on the line.

Nice to know Free Bird got an extra day to catch up and lap.

I suppose everyone has there own idea of what the best guitar solo is. Zakk is my fav. I will never forget his performance in the song (Mr. Crowley), Live in Budokan 2002

Why is it that a duet is in the running for best solo?

avatar

Freebird is not a duet, it is all Allen Collins. He just double tracked it and since he was improvising the first time didn't get it exactly the same on the overdub.

In that case Hotel California shouldn't be considered a 'solo' either...another duet, Don Felder and Joe Walsh.

Don Felder takes credit for the solo on Hotel California. Joe plays some harmonies & they share the spotlight a little during live performances but Don is considered the "lead guitarist".

im sure zack wouldnt mind losing to freebird though.

No more tears winning over one of the most Iconic guitar solos of all time. This is just CRAZY. I can remember when radio stations would have top 100, 500 or even 1000 and #1 and #2 were always Freebird and Stairway. One year it would be Stairway in the #1 spot and the next year it would be Freebird. It seems like this is being pushed through by the Metal Guys. Nothing against Metal, I do like some Metal. But it seems that Metal guys have no appreciation for anything other than Metal. this is very narrow minded. I love almost all music. I hate Rap and bad Jazz. But really do love all music. To all you metal Guys, open your ears and broaden your musical tastes. You might find there is more to music than just Metal.

It goes both ways. Don't fool yourself into thinking otherwise. The classic rock and blues players and fans disrespect shredders and metal just as much. If not more in my experience. Now that I think about it, I can't remember the last time I saw a metal fan putting down the classics outside of 14-year-old fanboys who don't know what they're talking about, yet I see classic rock guys making fun of Yngwie Malmsteen almost daily (in their defense, they don't know what they're talking about either).

Besides, you picked a pretty poor example to pick a metal vs. rock fight. Zakk Wylde's style is heavily rooted in blues, and although I've never heard for certain, I wouldn't be surprised if he claims Skynyrd as an influence. Just listen to his 1994 Pride and Glory project.

I couldn't agree with you more! No More Tears should've never beaten Layla, let alone Freebird. I know when I'm thinking best of all time, No More Tears jumps up to the top...yeah right! And Brian May is the 2nd best guitarist of all time too haha...

I suppose they're influenced by "Neo classical" as well ... LMAO

I am a METAL guy, but you know what, when I am in the car, I put the radio on Radio National and listen to shock horror classical music, and when I am in the mood for music on the TV, I invariably end up watching the CMC music channel, mainly because I can't stand *any* auto-tuned crap, and country musicians really know how to play, not really the singers themselves, but, the bands behind them. Nashville must have a production line of top notch musicians for all instruments.

But this competition is about solo's and my vote goes to Zakk Wlyde because this one is a kick-@R$3 solo. To be honest though I am a little peeved that "Europa" got knocked out that is one of my favourite solo's of all time, well, that and "Stairway..."

Rant over, now I will go and listen to some Tear for Fears and then some Meshuggah.

If a 'few fanatics' are voting multiple times(and taking over this poll), can someone post HOW to do that( vote multiple times), and just maybe that will level the playing field a little bit .... or force 'someone' to CLOSE that loophole!

avatar

celticknight

I haven't tried it but you should be able to wipe your internet cache and/or Internet history, it's worked in the past for me with older operating systems and when I was more rabid about polls over the Internet. Or, you might try using the 3 different browsers Firefox, IE, Chrome, to get 3 votes in. I'm sure Google would provide definitive answers.

I'm pretty sure it's just about impossible to close these types of loopholes, even with games on Facebook it's easy to send off multiple requests to friends.

Soloing with a slide is kewl. I like slide but not live unless you’re Foghat. Both these songs feature studio slide but Freebird is the only one that still do it live. Jake E. Lee did a slide on shot in the dark.

What difference does it make whether it's live or studio? WTH is wrong with this guy?...

I'd say half queen fans & half LBGT movement lol
