Origin: Another Robert Johnson–inspired move, this modern blues lick is in the style of John Hammond’s work on Tom Waits’ “2:19” from his Wicked Grin record. Theory: This one uses a Bb minor blues scale (Bb–Db–Eb–E–F–Ab). Playing Tip: Pick hard—especially on the sweep in measure 2. Check back tomorrow for Figure 50!
