At this month's 2013 Winter NAMM show in Anaheim, California, Orange Amplification will launch its new Custom Shop 50 amp. The hand-wired amp has a vintage flavor, much like its predecessor, the Retro 50, which the new circuit is based on. Each Custom Shop 50 is built in the Orange custom shop.
Computers have become the de facto platform for recording music, but the average PC is far from specialized for the task. PCs and Macs are designed for general computer functions and have a multitude of features and software programs that are unrelated to the endeavor of making music. Furthermore, you can spend a bundle of cash adding audio interfaces, monitors and recording programs to your computer, not to mention plug-ins for effects, amp emulations, instrument libraries and so on.
Just in time for Winter NAMM, Orange Amplification has launched its new Twin Channel OR100 amp. This guitar amp, which delivers up to 100 watts, is the first OR model to feature two channels. Drawing on the heritage of the original ‘Pics Only,’ which was launched in 1972, the OR100 has applied the best of the original features in terms of tone, construction and design and added new technology to improve the amp.
I reviewed Hughes & Kettner’s Tubemeister 5 mini amp a few issues ago, and was impressed by both its feature set and huge sound. The new Tubemeister 36, with 36 watts of output and three channels, offers considerably more features in a compact package that’s only about twice the size of the Tubemeister 5. The Tubemeister 36 may still qualify as a mini amp, but the only things small about it are its physical dimensions and affordable price. It offers versatility, performance and functions that aren’t available on many three-channel amps nearly four times its size.
Fargen Amplification has announced a new line of John Lennon signature guitar amplifiers. This is the first time Lennon's name has been associated with any amp or effect. The company's new Artist series features white components throughout, plus an acoustically transparent, UV-protected grill cloth that serves as the canvas for Lennon’s artwork. Five of the late former Beatle's designs are available in limited numbered editions of 11 each.
This amp is a favorite among reggae guitar players because of the crystal-clear response you can hear while using the clean channel. It was used by reggae jazz guitarist Ernest Ranglin and Junior Marvin when he played with Bob Marley & The Wailers. It's a solid-state, combo amp and features two 60-watt speakers that sounds good in live-music venues and recording studios.
